Who should we get in as Lambert's back up?

We are just going round and round in circles here I think probably best just to agree to disagree dont you before in degenerates into name calling and other personal insults!

Just to round up -

1. of course I wouldn't be happy if a player signed then p1ssed of after 1 game but the point being made was would a current premier league player drop 2 divisions so, yes

2. No I don't think players sign overnight but I also know it usually doesn't take 4 months.

3. No I don't think there is a queue of Premiership players waiting to join us, but I do believe we are an attractive, ambitious up and coming club that can compete in the transfer front.

4. seeing as Beattie is the first signing Rangers have made in 2 years knowing they were interested and actually signing are completely different.

As I say, lets agree to disagree!

Okay, but in summary

1. Given the choice of playing in the champions league or the Johnson Paints trophy, which would you chose?

2. Given the choice of winning a premier league title in another country or the third divison title in your own country, which would you chose?

3. Given the choice of playing in front of 45,000 and one of the biggest clubs in Britain or 21,000 for a medium sized underperforming club, which one would you chose?

4. Given the choice of a good chance of winnning a domestic double or even treble for the duration of your contract or a title this season then become a midtable, developing Championship team, which one would you chose?

I rest my case.

All about your level of ambition I suppose mate isn't, play in a competition where you have a 50% chance of winning, not really sport is it, like shout ducks with a machine gun!

I'm gutted that Kenwyne went to Stoke.... surely we should have been in for him? What top striker wouldn't want to drop 2 divisions? Not to mention his obvious affinity for stripes.

Is that a joke? why would he want to drop down 2 divisions? You said yourself he's a top stiker.....injured (badly) today though

With regards to the random SPL posts, I think the point that got made was a tad tounge in cheek and playing for Celtic or Rangers is'nt as attractive as it once was lets say with in last 10 years.

Still more attractive than playing league one football.

To be fair, i can see the logic. Strikers are all about goals, so surely they would all want to play at as low a level possible so they score more goals a season. I fully expect David Connolly to quit Saints and drop down the Southampton Junior 7 so he can bang in as many a season as possible.

Good players want to play in the highest leagues and earn big bucks....they are not solely motivated by goals scored. To suggest that Connolly would want to leave Saints just to score more goals in a lower league is silly imo. Unless you are ITK?

I know it's a long shot but I have always like Jason Roberts of Blackburn. He hasn't been given a squad number for the season and Sam Allardyce said in a TV intervie that it is time for him to part with the club but that he was surprised by the lack of interest in the player.

I know he's a Premiership striker but it's worth a shout maybe?

QPR turned him down because he wanted a 3+ year contract and 30k a week. The reason why theres a lack of interest is that hes an NPC calibre player but wants Prem wages.

Oh right, thanks, i just though like a lot of people on here all top players didn't care what level they played at and we can sign anyone we want.

Think Howard would be a good shout, 6'3 so a big target man who can be a right handful on his day (as we found out to our cost under Burley). Also good at holding the line and holding up play so Connolly and Barnard would be good foils. Must be getting on now, so could be up for a final hurrah and a decent short term deal.

Failing that Dowie doesn't seem to be doing much these days...

Ridiculous or not, I've said all summer we should weaken the competition like last season, chuck money at Huddersfield and sign Jordan Rhodes. Young, tall and a goalgetter.

Brett Pitman seems a good shout so far this season.

Well that's F**ked the secrecy with that one then

What secrecy would that be mate? He was walking around and chatted to several Saints fans who were there to get their football fix. No wig, no false beard. And I said he "may" have been there to watch Morgan, but there were 21 other players on the pitch. And as he worked with Shots manager Kevin Dillon at Reading, he may have just been there to support a mate.

Just a tongue in cheek reference to Cortese's wall of silence policy

(But thank you for the in depth response)

AP was at Aldershot yesterday –*may have been watching the Shots' Marvin Morgan. Tall awkward striker, a real handful, and had a good game yesterday.

Absolute donkey. I went to watch Aldershot last season & he was awful, fell over & rolled about on the ground Ricardo Fuller-like, claiming to be in agony, at least ten times and missed two absolute sitters. No thanks.

Morgan wouldn't be a bad shout, a centre-back's nightmare and had a good season in League 2 last year.

If we want a backup for Lambert, this is the sort of player we're likely to sign and to be honest, I'd prefer us to sign. Someone with a bit of hunger.

Howard would be ideal, but I'm guessing he'll either stay as a backup at Leicester or go to Huddersfield as a 1st choice.

With regards to some of the other names mentioned, it's both hillarious and embarrassing how little some of our fans seem to know about football.

Turkish why do you have to mock other people, fellow Saints fans?

The opening thread was about who'd we like to sign, it didn't say "please make sure any player mentioned is not being chased by any other team" Beattie is 32, his wife comes from Southampton, he loves the area, city and club, why is it such a wrench from reality to think we'd have a chance of signing him? Yes of course Rangers is a bigger club than us, and for him to choose us over them would of taken a massive effort from everyone at the club, but imo a possibility!

I've never said we could sign any player we want, I've never said any top striker would drop 2 leagues to play for us. I did say a 32 year old player in the twilight of his career may consider us! Did Conelly not drop down from Sunderland to this crappy un-attractive club??

Because some of them are mental. You personally didn't say we can sign anyone we want but a couple of other people on other threads have said we can sign anyone we want and if we are serious about promotion we should pay them as much as we can.

As for your comment about Beattie loving the club and the area he didn't think twice about leaving both when Everton waved £40k a week under his nose did he. Connolly didn't leave SUnderland for us, he was released by Sunderland and was a free agent, big difference. That is the only way we would ever get a player of this calibre. We are a league one club and if anyone thinks proven premier league players would turn down offers from other Premier League or even most Championship clubs to play in league one, then they are deluded. Saints fans or not, i'd tell my brother or dad they are mental if they suggested it too.

Your right he didn't think twice when going to Everton but you could see the love he still had for us when he scored against us, no celebration more a sense of guilt! All I would say is when he left for Everton he was 26, and with all due respect to Saints he was stepping up a level by joining them. Now is a different story in terms of stage of career, age, ambition, location etc, I agree, if Rangers are offering a 3 year contract on £25k per week it's a better deal for everyone, us included as I wouldn't want 1 player upsetting everyone else!

Bottom line is, we are still short of quality and unfortunately it's not going to be filled by Beatt's, so, who??
