modern matron Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Maybe it's me but was AP's interview re fans booing related to what's happened? He seemed quite emotional considering we'd won 2-0. Possibly thinking there are more important things than a football game...... RIP Markus
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I havent read anywhere when exactly it happened, so its entirely possible that it had either already happened or word had come through that it was imminent. No doubt in my mind that AP knew he was very seriously ill.
S-Clarke Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I would imagine officials in the club were aware of his condition as it seems he has been ill for a while.
Crab Lungs Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I've no doubt that the manager of the club probably did know... something like this wouldn't have been kept from him I suspect. It certainly explains the "lack" of transfer activity, but of course, this all pales into insignificance at this very moment.
Colinjb Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Who knows. Illness does make things seem to make a lot more sense though.
S-Clarke Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Why has it not been said what he died from? Maybe his family wish to keep it private? haven't got a problem with it.
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Maybe his family wish to keep it private? haven't got a problem with it. Me neither
Mr Saints Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Talksport (I know) said he passed away last night.

No doubt in my mind that AP knew he was very seriously ill. A friend of mine who works at SFC heard that he died late this afternoon.
Weston Super Saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Puts some perspective to the Chairman and his alleged unhappiness with our lack of promotion last season. Especially if the reports of a 'long illness' are true...... Also explains why our pre-season was where it was.

Especially if the reports of a 'long illness' are true...... Also explains why our pre-season was where it was. Yep. He must have known he wouldnt make it through another promotion campaign. A tragedy.
Viking Warrior Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I thought he looked ill when he came to the club very jaundiced. He was a total jaundiced. I am so stunned. I just hope that those ficle fans and they know who can retract their very racist comments of late and start to back Nicole we need him on board other wise the skate ****s will be in the ascendency. Rest in Peace Sir Markus you were a true saint Red army show some respect. A great man has died today
docker-p Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Has it been reported anywhere ( with some authority ) whether ML's death was as the result of long term illness or something unexpected?

hypochondriac Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Has it been reported anywhere ( with some authority ) whether ML's death was as the result of long term illness or something unexpected? It just says period of illness but they must have known for a fair while.

There was some talk with the transfer splash-out back in January that the 5-year plan had become a 3-year plan. Connection ???
NickG Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I would imagine officials in the club were aware of his condition as it seems he has been ill for a while. how do you know?
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 you hypocrit alpine Like, whatever. Not going to dignify your post by answering back.
sfc4prem Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 It was probably liver failure. Very sad. A great man who had nothing but the Club's best intentions at heart. A true saint. Condolences to his family. It's strange how everything that has happened now seems so easy to explain. We will continue your dream of the march to the Premiership.
S-Clarke Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 you hypocrit alpine seriously isn't the time for this.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Radhi Jaidi It's really sad Rest in peace Marcu... Radhi Jaidi We will do r best to win the league for him...

Yeah, the impatience from Cortese in terms of demanding promotion. The random tour of Switzerland. The seemingly random selflessness of the takeover. His evidently schoolboy love of the JPT final. I hope he got as much joy from his time in charge as we did. It is as Tragic as it is incredible. But why us!?
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 (edited) Yeah, the impatience from Cortese in terms of demanding promotion. The random tour of Switzerland. But why us!? We needed him the most ? You got to remember, this whole stupid vicious circle that football finance has got itself into is almost exclusively an English problem, and we were the highest profile club in trouble around that time. Maybe the sort of club we are (historically close-knit family/community) had something to do with it. But it could be something as bizarre as him being caught-up in the romance of us beating ManYoo in 1976; after all that was predicted in advance to be the most one-side FA Cup Final in history. Maybe he watched it. I get old Austrians comment on that game when they find out who I support. Edited 11 August, 2010 by alpine_saint

saintscottofthenortham Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 thought it was due to NC? Thats what I said when I heard that mentioned. Let the conspiracy theories commence. I was just putting something out there.
JonnyLove Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I have been wondering whether Markus was ill when he bought us and did so because he wanted to do one final piece of good. Regardless my prayers go out to his family and his friends. (Don't forget NC in this as he must be hurting right now as they must of been close for Markus to fully and completely trust him 100%).
Colinjb Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 thought it was due to NC? Could be and equally he may have told those who he trusted about his desire to have some fun before he passed away?
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 thought it was due to NC? Maybe NC was tasked with finding what he was looking for, and thereby brought the two parties together
hypochondriac Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 thought it was due to NC? I believe it was Oldknow who introduced them.
Dig Dig Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 If it was a long term illness then I'm sure all senior staff knew.... As a couple have already suggested long term illness does explain a few things like the large investment in the squad in Jan and the eagerness to make the play-off's last season.
modern matron Posted 11 August, 2010 Author Posted 11 August, 2010 Could be and equally he may have told those who he trusted about his desire to have some fun before he passed away? Ultimately does this mean that the "dream" passed away with him?
itchen_dan Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Maybe that was why he appointed Cortese to run the club for him so that he knew the club would be in capable hands when he did finally have to leave us. As I read somewhere on this forum earlier, it's nice to know that Markus is still looking after us financially now that he's gone.
maxi_sopez Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Do you think it was why we played such a strong team in the JPT and why pards wanted to win it so much?
Saint_clark Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Do you think it was why we played such a strong team in the JPT and why pards wanted to win it so much? Perhaps, Cortese thought getting promoted would make Liebherr happier and Pardew thought winning a cup would make him happier.
Colinjb Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Ultimately does this mean that the "dream" passed away with him? No, I believe from initial press that his dream will be part of his legacy. At the very least he will see us safe. Incredible fortune on our part.
Northant Saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 So perhaps it all makes sense now. What an incredible story.
Crab Lungs Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 So perhaps it all makes sense now. What an incredible story. I'm inclined to start to think this way too. He had made provisions knowingly... blimey. I'm just... totally choked.
Crab Lungs Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Of course we don't know the in's and out's but there is growing feeling looking at the message boards online that Markus was ill and knowingly bought the club and made provisions for the club for after his death to ensure we carried on. If this is in fact true, what an incredible gesture from an incredible man. I am still totally, utterly choked. Before I go to bed I would just like to say once more "God bless Markus, and rest in peace". Never, ever will we forget you.

Before I go to bed I would just like to say once more "God bless Markus, and rest in peace". Never, ever will we forget you. I have to say this is nonsense. ML bought the club expecting to see success as owner and chairman. He put Cortese in place as CEO as a man he trusted from their mutual business dealings beforehand where Cortese was a banker. There was no sentiment in that at all. Just an ambition to have the club managed well. To suggest otherwise is plain silly.
Northant Saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 If this really is the case, i'll be lost for words. You could make a film out of it.
bowers-sfc Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 he was fine and chatting while drinking a beer with the fan npre season in switzerland
