You are wrong. It was definitely Zoltan Liptak against Ipswich in the 2-2 draw, as another poster has since confirmed. What a blinder! Maybe you don't get to that many games and missed it, but it was a hell of a goal which I shall remember forever.

Actually, the goal you are referring to was Tomas Pekhart, here's a link from the BBC match report.

I have a season ticket and remember the goal you are talking about but there is no way that was scored by a lanky, Hungarian defender!

Erm, I'm starting to think you don't really understand this football thing. He's playing for HUNGARY. They are 63rd ranked in the World, immediately below the powerhouses of Benin. They were good in the 1950s, and the rest of the world has overtaken them since. Plus it was his debut, in a friendly match, and he was substituted after about 60 minutes.

None of these things say "great player" or even "great performance" to me. Plus, I've seen him try to play football at St Mary's a few times with my own eyes, and he was crap. Affected play more than Pulis to be fair though.

Assume that you didn't actually see him play at Wembley then, because he demonstrated (admittedly against England) that he was a very competent defender, especially considering it was his debut. People who take notice of FIFA rankings and make judgements on players based on that really don't understand much about football. Just because he was crap when you saw him does not mean players don't develop. Given some decent coaching (and not the mickey mouse Agents Orange) he has clearly developed to the stage where he plays at the top level in Hungary (Videoton are currently 4th in the League, admittedly after only 2 games) and probably wouldn't be out of place in the Championship. He is also now 25, an age where many central defenders begin to flourish, as they gain experience. No-one is saying the guy is a world beater, but it is quite interesting that a player who looked absolute toilet when he played for us 2 years ago has clearly developed into a player that looked competent on the international stage this week, playing against the best that England has to offer (not forgetting he was subbed before Hungary conceded 2 goals).

We didn't play Leicester that year, they were in League One.

It must have been Cardiff City then. Yes, that was it. It was definitely against Cardiff City because I remember it being against Cardiff City. I can remember there being loads of Cardiff City fans outside the ground after the game talking about that goal that Zoltan Liptak scored from about 30 yards. They were saying how good it was, which surprised me because usually they are violent thugs.

Oh, yes. I remember it very clearly now. Sorry for ever doubting your clearly superior knowledge. I forgot that Zoltan Liptak's nickname was in fact David McGoldrick ;)

Yeah, you're right. Deppo is thinking of Liptak's goal against Birmingham City.

I was sitting there watching it on the box whilst posting on this thread actually.

All I've said is that he was absolutely terrible for us, and used some examples of rankings to point out that you don't have to be any good relatively speaking to get one match for a struggling nation (though Lloyd James STILL hasn't got a full Welsh cap, bizarrely). If he was anything resembling competent for Hungary then he's improved about 5000%.

Oh, and before I forget, I'd also like to make it very clear that Calum Davenport was fcking sht BEFORE he got his legs stabbed up by his brother-in-law, in case anyone starts thinking he only got that bad "due to his injuries".

Not sure why this Zoltan "terrible talentless tall central defender in name only for Saints" Liptak thread made me think of that.

This thread has gone on far longer than I imagined it would...

That is almost certainly due to some comically rubbish misidentification of Liptak as Pekhart and so on.

2 mins against Preston in 3-1 win

2 mins against Watford 2-2

10 mins against Charlton 3-2 loss

6 mins against Brum in 1-0 loss

1 min against Ipswich 3-0 win

1 min against Cardif 1-0 win

1 min against Palace 1-0 win

He was crap, usually either brought him on and played five at the back or to lump up forward. One of the worst footballing defenders I've ever seen.

Interesting that the two games he played longest in were the only two we lost

That was it! I always get them and Cardiff City confused. Mainly because of Jason Koumas playing for both of them. Cracking goal by Liptak though. Will never forget it.
