alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 There are two obvious ways, imo : Re-name the Itchen stand the "Markus Liebherr Stand" Ted gets some company at the front of the ground. Any others ? I personally am not in favour of re-naming the stadium. It's St. Marys to everyone..
View From The Top Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I don't know what you've suggested but I'd love to see the stadium named after him. It would be a fitting and lasting memorial IMHO.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Agree with you Alpine. Lets leave the stadium as it is because its just too well known as St Marys. But i like the idea of naming a stand after Markus.
Thedelldays Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Agree with you Alpine. Lets leave the stadium as it is because its just too well known as St Marys. But i like the idea of naming a stand after Markus. Rename the Itchen stand.....simple ast that
paulwantsapint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Sir Ted would be pleased to have St. Markus next to him
Joesaint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 should we pay though; I kinda think we should in his name for something. Would be happy for any stand named after him or the ground or even a statue.

benjii Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 A statue and a stand IMO. And while we're at it, let's get rid of "Northam", "Itchen" etc and have a "Bates" and "Le Tissier" stand too. Most of all, I wanted a passionate, united fanbase roaring us to promotion. I'm ****ing gutted. Let's make his dream a reality.
miltonroad Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Short term measure - turn the red sash black for the next home game. Long term - statue next to Ted.
alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Author Posted 11 August, 2010 Short term measure - turn the red sash black for the next home game. Long term - statue next to Ted. Umbro are having enough problem with our kit as it is.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Rename a stand after him. Not sure which because each fan might have their own idea. I'd plump for the Itchen to be renamed purely as it's where the sdministration is and it would be impressive to see the name outside? Also for it to be somehow legally protected from altering? In the case that we fall into dubious ownership and an itinerant owner wish to glorify himself?

alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Author Posted 11 August, 2010 A little OTT for someone who saw us play a handful of times don't you think Bizarre.......
S-Clarke Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Win promotion for him. At this moment in time - this has to be it. Let's get back to where we belong and where he wanted us to go. The stand/stadium names are something to seriously consider in time.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Win promotion this season. This is my view, that is what he wanted. They should hang a picture of Markus Liebherr in the dressing room, the players must play for his memory.
SNSUN Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I'll be getting "Markus Liebherr RIP" on the back of my new home shirt, and I NEVER get anything on the back of my shirts. I don't think I'll be the only one in doing this. Re-naming the Itchen stand the Markus Liebherr stand would be the most obvious thing to do, a statue of Markus ending up like the original Bates statue would be in poor taste. (Though I honestly think the club have learned their lesson on that score...)

alpine_saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Author Posted 11 August, 2010 Factual..... And irrelevant. He had more impact on saving this club than a hundred of you Über fan sash-hating Ultras.
St.Patrik Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 That sir is the best way to honour mr.Liebherr Sir Ted would be pleased to have St. Markus next to him
Weston Super Saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Factual..... And yet bizarre at the same time!
SO16_Saint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 not sure of the legallities or whether the FL would allow it, but a team of Liebherr's (on back of shirts) playing on Saturday would be good as a short term tribute.
SaintDan Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Liebherr no 1 is going on the back of my home shirt for this season, the shirt is a one off shirt as was Markus
SanFranciscoSaint Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 There would be no Southampton Football Club without Marcus, and for that he will always be remembered with great affection. Naming a stand after him would be only fitting, and would be a permanent reminder to future fans of the man who saved Saints.
Michelle Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I shall be purchasing my personal tribute tomorrow. Someone somewhere has apparently already mentioned "St. Markus Stadium" - keeps it as SMS that way!
rocknrollman no2 Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Rather than a full sized statue, how about a bust of his head placed in the reception,or even placed on top of the clock in the Itchen stand?
JackFrost Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I think the stand is a good idea, and also having "Liebherr" on the player's shirts for the next game if it's allowed. I'm sure a similar thing has been done before. A statue possibly but from what I've heard Makus was a fairly laid back and quiet person so he may have found a statue embarassing
docker-p Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 And irrelevant. He had more impact on saving this club than a hundred of you Über fan sash-hating Ultras. Also factual. Welcome back to the real world. But less impact than any number of Saints 'legends' on and off the pitch. Don't get me wrong I'm very grateful for his buying us when he did, but lets keep this in perspective. He was an owner for a very short period in our 125 year history.

gaz Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 If it wasn't for Markus, we wouldn't have made it to 125 years.
pangy Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Personally I think the stadium should be named after him, because without him buying our club there is every chance there would be no Southampton fc
Whitey Grandad Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I see that the club has mentioned a 'memorial service'. Is it a daft idea to suggest that this be held at the stadium?
Saint Fan CaM Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 As I have already stated on the other two threads on the same subject, Markus deserves a statue next to Ted's - no question in my mind of the validity in this. A stand or even the Stadium itself could be renamed by anyone in the future. A statue would serve as a permanent reminder to everyone of the grace with which Markus saved our famous club for our great City.
Golden Balls Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I wouldn't like the stadium named after him as I think St Marys is just too well known. Rename the Itchen Stand (where he always sat) "The Markus Liebherr Stand"
sadoldgit Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 With all due respect to him, he was hardly in Ted's league. Who knows what might have happened under his ownership but he was only the owner for a season. It is also not true to say without him we would not be here. Someone would have bought us. A memorial by all means and he will be sadly missed, but more for what might have been than what was. RIP
CB Fry Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 I think we need a significant period of reflection before the club makes any decision on this kind of long term tribute. Let's get on with the immediate memoriums first at the next game and some kind of fomal ceremony after that. For all we know his family may not want or think appropriate for a stand to be named after him or have a statue put up. My personal preference would be for something a little more community focused - a Leibherr foundation supporting our city's budding young sportsmen, or inner city/disabled/disadantaged kids. I think Markus stood for legacy and would be good to see him remembered like that. I'm not comfortable with him having the same standing as Ted Bates, purely because the time he spent with us is just not long enough. Ted Bates got the statue for many reasons, but one of them was simply sheer dedication and length of service which no one else is ever likely to replicate. But this is all far to contentious to debate sensibly today.

saintscottofthenortham Posted 11 August, 2010 Posted 11 August, 2010 Docker-P. You need to hang your head in shame. We were hours from going down the pan, the following season he took us to wembley. He lived in switzerland but yet only failed to be present at SMS when the Icelandic Volcano grounded planes all of Europe. Your a disgrace imo.

I welcome your alternative proposal too. However, although it may be true that Markus's association with the club was not as long as Teds, my opinion is that when you weigh the impact on the club's fortunes, you cannot separate the two.
