Hypothetical Premier League

So... one of the many discussions I've had amongst my group of friends are who are the twenty biggest football clubs in the land (in terms of attendances, but with a small emphasis on trophies) and what would be the ideal Premier League lineup?

There are obvious omissions like Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton and Wigan, that's a given. There are also obvious stalwarts, such as United, City, Liverpool and Arsenal. But what of the rest?

What would be your top 20 english clubs?

For me personally the 20 would be:

Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham, Man City, Newcastle, Sunderland, Wednesday, L**ds, Forest, West Ham, Derby, Wolves, Blackburn, West Brom, Sheff United, and finally Ipswich or Norwich (I can't pick between them).

You could arguably have clubs like Southampton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Birmingham in for some of the others. You're not far away. Blackburn are in for me on trophies won.

Sheff Wednesday have to be in there

Would you include Forest?

I would purely for their success under Clough.

But don't Sheff United average more than Wednesday? I had that dilemma... my initial suggestion was Wednesday, then I thought about United... then I considered that maybe, just maybe, they are both Premier League sized clubs. :)

Only for 3 of the last 30 seasons have the Pigs had a higher average attendance than us. Going back even further, only very rarely have they been higher in history too. It's only Premiership football, free Under 13s STs, and some buy 1 get 1 free ticket deals that have seen their recent higher crowds. We're bigger than them in just about every other respect too.

Bigger ground.

More seasons in the top flight.

More higher finishes in the top flight.

More trophy wins.

A trophy win in living memory (the 4th Division win they had doesn't count ;) )

We've been in Europe they haven't.

Higher record attendance.

Higher record transfer fee paid.

More players capped for England.

Some other good trivia facts:

United took their nickname 'the Blades' from us. Originally we used to be the Blades, and United were the Cutlers, but we ditched it and they took on the nickname the Blades.

We call United the Pigs because their red and white striped shirts look like streaky bacon. They copied us by calling us Pigs even though there is no such thing as blue and white bacon.

Also, Bramall Lane (before they moved in) used to be our ground. We played there for many years before them and moved to Olive Grove and then to Hillsborough. Again they copied us by moving in.

;) Forever in our shadow.

I'd have:

From the current lot

Arse

Chelsea

Mancs x2

Scousers x2

Spuds

Villa

Newcastle

Makems

Brum

WBA

West Ham

Then I'd add

Saints

Leeds

Blades

Wednesday

Norwich

Derby

Forest

So we are losing Blackpool, Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, Fulham, Wolves and Stoke

Interesting from Tartan Owl, thank you for setting my straight on the Sheff U/Sheff W situation!

I've seen a few people leave out Wolves... I thought, with their history and their crowds they might sneak in above WBA?

As for Southampton, it's difficult but I think they might just be in the top 20 clubs. That said, there are so many of a similar size; Derby, Leicester, Coventry, Sheff U, Ipswich, Norwich, Brum etc...

Ok, so what are those positions actually based on? Doesn't seem to be in points order, or wins..
