Saint in Paradise Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 'Dancing' Turkish man still facing assault charges NZPA August 10, 2010, 7:02 am Police say they will not drop assault charges against a Turkish man who claims he was performing a traditional dance rather than hitting, kicking and strangling his wife. Hawera man Allaetin Can made news around the world when he was charged with assault after a passerby alerted police to what appeared to be a violent fracas with his wife, Elmas. Can claims he and his wife were performing a vigorous traditional Turkish dance, called kolbasti, outside their kebab shop after a particularly profitable lunch shift. Police said they would not withdraw the charges after watching an example of the dance on a DVD given to them by Can's lawyer, the Taranaki Daily News reported today. Police prosecutor Steve Michael said while he could not discuss details of the case or the evidence, police had used the appropriate test in deciding to continue with their prosecution. "We'll put the evidence to the judge and he'll decide." The kolbasti dance involves animated moves set to fast-paced Turkish beats, and includes mimicry of hitting, kicking and headlocks. The case will be heard at Hawera District Court on August 17. http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/7735605/dancing-turkish-man-still-facing-assault-charges/
