It's all very well Mr Liebherr wanting to be a completely hands off owner, but surely there has to come a point when Nicola Cortese has to be reigned in. In the latest PR gaffe he has opened pandoras box by picking a fight with the press and the negative publicity which will follow is not good news for the club.

This latest gaffe comes on the back of Nicola annoying fans with the removal of the installment plan and his introduction of a £3 booking tax on tickets. Not to mention his scathing attack on Matt Le Tissier.

So come on Markus, either get involved in the running of the club or get a wise head in to give the inexperienced Cortese some advice on where he is going wrong.

Sorry but look at this from his (ML) perspective

- Are we in debt? No,

- Are we bringing in revenue? Yes

- Do we have a team that will prosper this season? Yes, BUT it could be better

- Do we have plans to improve ourselves? Yes

- Is there time to improve? Yes

- Do we have plans to make us even more self sustainable? Yes

- Does it matter if the press are unhappy? No

- Is the press a main revenue stream? No

- Are we looking to make them a revenue stream? Yes, not a large one.

I am confessing that this latest decision by Nicola is quite bizzarre and for thei first time I don't agree with it and don't see the reasoning behind it, but as long as we aren't hemmeraging money, why should Marcus care.

And I don't agree with the 'get some old board types back'. this is tantamount to Dave Cameron ringing up Gordon Brown and saying, 'Any chance you could do the budget for us?'.

Naturally any ex baord members with Socialist leanings would be unsuitable.;)

If you're trying to be constructive in any argument it's logical not to start with destructive comments.

If, however, you are trying to draw attention to yourself your approach is effective.

This thread is so irrelevant to real life it doesn't really justify it's space & I've just wasted x seconds of my life that I won't get back pointing this out...sigh!

Wow, so falling out with the fourth estate and loosing revenue to the bargain is irrelevant. I wish i lived in your world.

I don't know enough about the many ex board members to say who could offer something and who should be left in retirement, but itd be foolish to say that all the ex board members could offer nothing to the club today. I just feel that there must be some wise heads with good links locally and nationally that could come in and repair some of the mess Nicola has created.

This might have more legs if the individual had no previous association with the club. You've been bought in to do a job by the owner and you consult old board members? I don't think so. That said though, given the character portrait given by some people on here NC wouldn't take the advice anyway.

Dune

Have you forgotten what was actually said?

How is this a scathing attack?

In addition to this, various figures with past associations to the Club have been quick to voice their opinions, among them a long time former manager, and former players, one of whom was associated with a so-called consortium which delayed for an important few weeks last summer our plans to stabilise the Club.

These commentators are each entitled to their opinions of course. However, I must tell them that running a major football club such as Southampton is a rather different matter from writing about doing so. I am sure that readers of this message will reach their own conclusions.

Mr Dune, care to answer?

tbh Le Tissier shouldn't have responded to the questions he was asked as they were based on unfounded speculation.

It would be worrying if any chairman of any organisation didn't listen to advice. I wouldn't know if NC is like this or not and would hope that his gaffes are because he doesn't have the people there to offer the advice.

I think you're right, NC is all powerful and reports of his charactor suggests he isn't likely to want interference from outside. Which is why some of his more bizzare ideas get implemented when if there was a proper board structure they could have been avoided. I don't think previous board members are the answer, but someone with experience in football, and or media, to help NC from ballsing up on a regular bases.

So because NC was fundermental in bring in ML and his money, means he is infallible and his decisions should never be questions.

We all all delighted that NC arrived when he did, and I hope he, and more particularly ML stays around for some time. HOWEVER, he is making a lot of gaffs, which arguably are the sort that could be avoided with some more experienced help.

Sensible view. Neither knocking, or praising, NC. Just pointing things out.

What no one know is whether the failure to do more to strengthen the team over the close season is due to lack of funds from ML, decisions by Cortese on how to use the budget, or Pardew not having recommended signings. We can rule out a firm decision not to strengthen, as Pardew has stated publicly that he wants at least two players but its difficult to see where the responsibility lays.

The worrying thing is that this should have been resolved about two months ago, and that even if signings are made soon, any benefit from them will be later than it should have been, and may even be disruptive in the short term.

I'm sure there are lots of organisations that have CEOs that take no notice at all of advice given to them. That could be applied to every layer of management in any org!

On a different more rambling note, I think that NC or someone like him has alot to offer to "professional" game, especially the FL and FA. For all Dave Whelan's failings I agree that the FL and FA need to be run by professionals. The people already involved in the game are never going to like change. NCs letter to the other chairman of the FL saying we shouldn't be accepting the 48m in parachute payments was entirely correct. In 3 years time no one will be getting promoted to the premier league, it'll be a closed shop given the massive sums given to the clubs coming down, they'll all yo-yo.

I'm going to really miss the weekly 2 page spread in The Sun on SFC. That was a fantastic piece of media advertisement for our club and without that we won't get barely any press.

Oh wait... We only get the same as every other club outside the prem?

If nothing had happened with the press, the Match report would merely have been

........Southampton 0-1 Plymouth...............

Summerfield (47)

Att: 21,000

Who gives a bloody monkeys!? The press are only interested when they can print something negative, hence why this has turned up!

Perhaps one day you will....:)

On a more serious note the commercial arrangement that is being tried is not unusual in other sports - test cricket being the most high profile I would imagine.

It may be that it's a step too far for a League one club but I applaude the initiative in trying - I'm sure there are other chairmen who would like to give it a try but lack the commercial balls of a businessman who is not hamstrung by convention.

Certainly one of the lower priorities when assessing the result is what the Sun say...I don't suppose they ever print more than the few lines grudgingly spared for a non-PL club let alone print match photos. I may well be wrong - I wouldn't read the comic if it was bought for me so it's not a researched opinion.

I do have to wonder, If the TOP 4 did this, would there be outrage in the press still or would the press continue to kiss their arses in fear of not being given access to our World Cup Stars?

Celtic did it and the press printed blank photos and they are a massive British club.

Celtic are also a club in a two horse League where no one cares about the opposition. If Saints made it to the Prem and were playing Man Utd at St MAry's that is a little different from Celtic vs St Mirren.

ALso Celtic have a shirt sponsor who would put pressure on them to end the measures as their brand isn't getting exposure. Saints don't have a shirt sponsor to do this.

SteveGrant plays his fiddle while Dune hammers another nail into the coffin of SaintsWeb

Tend to agree somewhat with this. This forum has been hi-jacked this summer by a small handful of agenda-laden doom-mongers, who cannot wait for something to go wrong so that everyone will turn around and say "F*** Me! You were right all the time". I certainly welcome different opinions and have always enjoyed the sensible ( sometimes the non-sensible!!) debates that there used to be. I accept that the club have made a few ****-ups over the summer, the biggest of which has been the complete lack of communication with the fans. I certainly do not think that NC is untouchable or that his decisions should not be questioned but there needs to be some sense of reasonable balance in the arguments, not just a few "Billy Big ********" posting rumour and opinion as fact, and looking for their moment in the sun. If I wanted that, I would go to "another forum!"

Celtic are still a massive club with a massive fanbase. The press wouldn't be bullied by them so they certainly won't be bullied by a little club like us.

I'm sorry but we are receiving multiple complaints about this thread asking for it to be locked so I am going with the popular vote and doing as requested.

If people disagree with my decision please PM me rather than starting more threads on this matter. There is no agenda here, it just appears that a number of you feel it is unconstructive and unwarranted.
