doggface Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Does anyone know what the latest is on the plush staplewood redevelopment? The last I heard was work was due to be completed this summer but as far as I am aware work has not started. There were rumours that there were disputes with contractors, even that it is not going to happen. Would be nice if the club updated us? Anyone got any idea?
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I think the truth lies is in your 3rd sentence;work had started but has now been delayed while new contractors are found.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 (edited) Surely it doesn't take this long to find new contractors (if that indeed was the problem). Liebherr takeover - 8/7/09 Staplewood plans made public - 8/12/09 Planning permission granted - 13/1/10 It is now 7 months since planning permission, 8 months later from when the plans went public and 13 since the takeover - 8/8/10 Edited 8 August, 2010 by Matthew Le God
Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 it is hardly urgent though is it..? really..? the team that beat us yesterday train on a public park..something similar to the common....
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 the team that beat us yesterday train on a public park..something similar to the common.... Marjons isn't a public park, it is a Sports University College.
Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Marjons isn't a public park, it is a University College. hmmm..tell you what..I will wonder down there and see if I can walk around on it...bet I can..?
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 hmmm..tell you what..I will wonder down there and see if I can walk around on it...bet I can..? Well you said "similar to Southampton Common". As far as I'm aware Southampton Common isn't home to a Sports University College and the facilities it has.
Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Well you said "similar to Southampton Common". As far as I'm aware Southampton Common isn't home to a Sports University College and the facilities it has. hmmmm..it is similar is size and that I can go on there...ok, I meant green park..or hoglands or the sporty or or or or or ffs, just making an example of a park in southampton... do you have to be so anal..?
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 You make it sound like they train on the Hoe!
Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 they certainly dont train at anything remotely as good as staplewood.. so no wonder why the urgency to get it spruced up is not there...
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 hmmmm..it is similar is size and that I can go on there...ok, I meant green park..or hoglands or the sporty or or or or or ffs, just making an example of a park in southampton... do you have to be so anal..? Sorry, its just I know Plymouth well and to describe what they are using at Marjons as a park is just wrong. They are also using the sports department of the University. Of course I agree with you that it isn't as good as having your own training ground but certainly far more advanced than a park.
Saint 76er Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I think the truth lies is in your 3rd sentence;work had started but has now been delayed while new contractors are found. This is surely very unusual to lose a contractor so early in a project, especially with the fanfare (not to mention controversy) associated with it's launch. Also IIRC a big deal was made of having found the ideal contractor who shared the club's environmental vision and it even sounded a little like a green crusade. Now, eight months later nothing much seems to have happened and yet completion was promised by this July! Where is the transparency in this case as NC was quick to trumpet this project (admittedly the Echo were quicker), almost as a cornerstone of his administration but when it goes tits up we get no comment or official communication of any description and we are left to our own devices to speculate on media such as this board. Am also a bit surprised the Echo have not been following up on this, if only as a points scoring exercise...
dune Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I think the truth lies is in your 3rd sentence;work had started but has now been delayed while new contractors are found. This is what I have heard, but I wouldn't like to speculate as to why the old contractors walked away.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Would be an interesting question to hear the answer for at the Saints BBC Radio Solent fans forum in early September.

Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 hmmm..well, you know better than me eh..i have only lived here for the last 11 years hey ho I've lived in Plymouth for 13 years in total. Between 1990 and 2006. Not that years in Plymouth matter. I do know however that the club are using a lot of the Universities sports facilities/academic staff and that you don't get them at parks.

DRAMA QUEEN!!!!!!
Torbay Saint Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 On receiving the planning permission the agent acting on behalf of the club would have had to discharge pre commencement planning conditions - which can take a while (not 8 months though).
hamster Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Pompey won the cup training on a school/college field. I understand also that Sainst won the cup running up and down Hill Lane, well those who didn;t cadge lifts. I've long thought that training facilities are merely variations on a theme; running, lifting things, pushing things, pulling things and kicking footballs. All of which can be done very cheaply.

Deppo Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I have lived in Plymouth for 15 years now and I say that their training ground is not a park, nor is it a common. It is a state of the art University Sports Facility, where players train whilst getting a degree. Nicola would never stand for that sort of thing with our players. He doesn't want them bettering themselves. He wants to keeps them as daft footballers who he can easily manipulate. The man is pure evil. only the good lord knows what his plan is with staplewood. Something fishy is going on. Something very, very sinister.

saintsmike25 Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Yeah thats what i've heard from a VERY good source too.
Block 5 Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I have heard that Cortese..... ....is turning Staplewood into this....
dickyhale Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 It was a example about it being like the common ffs,
GenevaSaint Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 I gather work did start and certain elements have been completed. There was then a hitch which I am loath to reveal on here because I would get shot and now fresh builders are being sought. Come on Duncan do share, you'll only get shot by the pro NC brigade surely, or would it be the informant? I'll go for the autocratic Mr Cortese somehow got involved and the builders either left by choice or were pushed out of the door. Christ on a bike when will this rumour mill and not so subtle innuendo finish? For all of the people that don't like change, read "who moved my cheese".

alpine_saint Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 what the fook has it got to do with you? what the fook has it got to do with any of us? Yep, this is fair comment. SFC is no longer publicy owned.
GenevaSaint Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 The builders had a disagreement with Cortese which resulted in them walking away. Thanks for the clarification Hypo. Which begs the question, just how hard can this Italian be to work with ;-) Seriously, would be interesting to understand the type of disagreement. Contractual, money, timelines, quality of work.....

richardc Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 was it anything to do with the contractors taking pictures of staplewood without Cortese knowing
Chez Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 why are we redeveloping Staplewood anyway? I never really understood this. I always thought (anmd that includes whilst being in the Prem) that we had pretty top notch facilities already. Was that not the case?
doggface Posted 9 August, 2010 Author Posted 9 August, 2010 Things have moved on now chez, the grounds a nice but the buildings are very outdated.

I always thought (anmd that includes whilst being in the Prem) that we had pretty top notch facilities already. Was that not the case? It was the case 8 years or so ago. Now-a-days Staplewood is extremely dated and well behind a large number of Premier League and Championship training grounds. If Cortese/Liebherr really want to establish Saints as a top flight team again, then Staplewood has to be improved significantly. Edited 9 August, 2010 by Matthew Le God
docker-p Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 If Cortese/Liebherr really want to establish Saints as a top flight team again, then Staplewood has to be improved significantly. It would help then if NC could actually get along with someone so the job could be completed.
aintforever Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 If Cortese/Liebherr really want to establish Saints as a top flight team again, then Staplewood has to be improved significantly. What a load of nonsense, Pompey won the FA Cup training on a field in Eastleigh.
buctootim Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 What a load of nonsense, Pompey won the FA Cup training on a field in Eastleigh. You've got to wonder, given the kinds of grounds and pitches Saints will be visiting this season, whether roughing it a bit wouldnt actually do them some good.

Thedelldays Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 They might use the gym at Marjons but they still train near home park at central park pitches. thank you....indeed they do, central park, which is behind Home park...it also has a pitch and putt..lol...great recreation for the players
MorningtonCrescent Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 You've got to wonder, given the kinds of grounds and pitches Saints will be visiting this season, whether roughing it a bit wouldnt actually do them some good. Rumour is that the re-developed Staplewood will include a pitch designed to be like a potato patch. Good ideas that we really could do with THIS season!
Chez Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 Things have moved on now chez, the grounds a nice but the buildings are very outdated. I honestly don't know what you mean by that. Can you expand on that please.

There was then a hitch which I am loath to reveal on here because I would get shot and now fresh builders are being sought. Quite clearly NC can't speak Polish... or Quite clearly the builders have all gone back home or NC refused to allow them space to park their Kilbassa/Pickled Herrings Van in the car park
notnowcato Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 So on the balance of postings; Mr Cortese is evil personified and all that disagree with him are beyond reproach. How dare anyone be thankful that Mr Cortese saved our club. Or be thankful for one of our best seasons - yes, a great season in Level 3 as that is how far our club has dropped due to the previous incumbants, but an enjoyable season nonetheless. No, what the majority need is to be able to vent their frustration over trivial matters such as snappers and building work not completed on time - without really knowing the full story. Well enjoy yourselves internet warriors if that is how you get your kicks. I'll look forward to tonights game and Saturday's and the games beyond. I'm not a Cortese Luvvie, nor do I own rose tinted specs, I believe in freedom of speech.

I read somewhere on here that is was due to the Contractors wanting some money up front and Cortese wanting to pay when they had completed! Edited 10 August, 2010 by Big Bad Bob added the word 'some'
hypochondriac Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 I read somewhere on here that is was due to the Contractors wanting some money up front and Cortese wanting to pay when they had completed! I believe it was more to do with installments and COrtese saying something like "my word is my bond." I'm not really sure of the details though so I can't say for certain.
