They were saved from proper questioning and prosecution by the British government. If they hadn't been a 'well-connected' family with cute blond-haired kids they would have been fed to the dogs (maybe the ones who smelt Maddy's dead body in the wardrobe and hire car).

 

The deal with the gov't and media is that they carry on the 'search' for Madeleine because it helps push various agendas (child protection, slowly easing us into accepting chipping at birth, ID cards etc.), and it helped sell papers for a year. In return they will not be thrown in jail. Essentially they sold their souls, regardless of whether their daughter's death was accidental or not (if they gave the children drugs and that's why she fell and died they WOULD lie about it).
