Saints 0-1 Plymouth - Reaction

Arizona

Was it just me as i thought Dickson's crossing in the first half was brilliant?

Definately need more pace. I thought that Barnard and Connolly were forced out wide far too often.

AP,if you are going to make a sub, please make a bit earlier than 3 mins form the end.........at least give the player coming on a chance to get in to the game!

Thought Dickson looked very good, his delivery was fantastic

Apart from when he was passed the ball and it rolle under his feet ad when he crossed the ball behind for a GK.

I'll give him a chance, but wasn't impressed at all.

Frustrating, but being a Saints fan it all had a little bit of inevitability about it.

1st half was great at times. Nice flowing football, played on the deck, great penetration down both flanks (the left side in particular) – But I never felt we had the aerial power to do them any damage. 1st half set pieces were good too. We just lacked a little bit of power, pace & guile in central areas to carve them open.

2nd half was just one of those typical bloody Saints moments. Bad defending for the goal and it sucked the collected life out of everyone. We didn’t we really do much until Lallana came on – I thought he looked great considering he’s had no match time. Everyone else just kind of wilted, the longer the game went on (Punch & Morgan in particular).

Still, with a bit more luck, we could’ve blagged a late equaliser.

No need to panic. Rickie would’ve had a couple in the 1st half alone if he was playing

poor result....we played some pretty stuff..more so in the first half...awful efforts in front of goal..one shot on target in open play..?

desperately missed lambert

one thing..better get used to how plymouth played as most will do that

Fair summing up, imo. We were all huff and NO puff! I wonder how many games like this NC will tolerate?

I don't know about you guys, but I am furious. How could the players play like that? In their first game of the season? I say it's outrageous. They should all be made to do hard manual labour for the rest of the week. I might even burn my new shirt and support Portsmouth. It's clear Pardew is way out of his depth and we'll be lucky to make the play offs. Our season is over already.

Then we should panic, since it means all our hopes are on the shoulders of one man (and he is currently injured) and the opposition will know that.

He made countless crosses and you pick up on two mistakes, yet you clamour for Antonio who consitently crossed it behind, strange, but outlines your lack of footballing knowledge i suppose.

But hey, don't let the football get in the way of your racist comments and prawn sarnies

Puncheon was crap, although he was clearly unfit.

Don't rate Barnard at all, never seen anything special from him. He can't stay on his feet FFS.

Harding had a terrible 2nd half.

Davis' kicking is beyond a joke.

The crowd was sh1t, turned on the team at the first opportunity, w4nkers.

We played very well the first 35-40 minutes, Lambert would've buried those 2 Hammond chances. Great crosses, he will feast on that kind of delivery this year.

We played good football for the fist 25 minutes, and then we went back to long ball even though nobody was up there to win a header????

Our lack of options on the bench was painfully obvious, Lallana did well but he was clearly struggling.

First game of the season and on TV, always got to be expected. A few signings and we'll be fine.

They only had ONE shot on target..

We need to create more chances.

It wasn't good enough, and Pardew knows that and the team knows that, the pressure has got to the players and injuries haven't helped. What will help is Pardew forcing his hand and getting us good loans, i.e good wingers.

45 more games to go. On the bright side we did DOMINATE,

but this defeat doesn't surprise me because from what i've heard there's not enough time being spent on the training pitch AT ALL.

Its just one game but for me it was very worrying.

1st half we looked comfortable but really missed rickie to finish the crosses. We have known we need a similar player for months so not good enough.

Goal was a joke, butterfield was challenging fonte for the ball was for me the main error. He did not get forward well at all.

Connolly looked well off the pace & Barnard was not much better 2nd half.

The only player who stood out 2nd half was a quarter fit lallana. The rest were utter dross & Plymouth wanted it more which was the most disappointing aspect.

We have only a couple of weeks to address our obvious weaknesses in cm, striker & wide player.

Plymouth were well organised & many teams will set up like that but we could not break them down, no plan b it appears.

Poor poor start.

I've not mentioned Antonio so you must have imagined the clamour. And yet again you have to resort to namecalling. Grow up little boy.

What worries me is that a lot of people are relying very heavily on Lambert. It is clear that he is our greatest goal threat but we need tolearn to win without him and win convincingly.

You can see why though .... at least one of those free kicks from 25 yards would have had the net rippling, and as for those crosses in the first half .... he could have stuck away a few of those on crutches!! ;)

I was a bit disappointed with Puncheon and Spidermans 2nd half performances ... obvioulsy not really match fit. What a shame Lallana wasn't match fit ...

.... the only thing is, as per Saints long standing tradition ....

1st game of the season

On Sky TV

Opposition new manager (never worked for us though!!)

Loads of people a bit rusty and not into the pre match routines and forgot their lucky underwear etc

.... todays result has not come as a total shock to us.

The season starts next game ... at least it bloody well better!!

Dunno why everyone's moaning, it's the first game of the season FFS!

Norwich lost their opener last year 7-1 and look how they ended up!

Yep, with a new manager, is that what you are wishing for? I'm certainly not.

Thought Punch was very poor today, clearly wasn't 100% fit. Barnard also was poor, his positioning and lack of understanding about what DC was trying to do was obvious. I can see based on that performance why AP did not play him as much as we all expected when he arrived last season. Clearly we need another striker, primarily as backup to RL, but you can't hope to go a season with 3 strikers, one of whom has a bad injury record.. We also need some pace out wide and competition in CM, apart from that we will be up there come next May.

Had a bad feeling about the game when they played 'Sex on Fire' by KOL before the game, thats what they played in the 08-09 season! Seriously though we missed Lambert big time, and we really do need to learn to win without him as he can't play every game, reckon he'd have buried the two headers Hammond missed. Other than clearly needing to sign a big striker as a back up i'm not overly worried, still think there was enough quality on display to be optimistic for the season, although i'd say theres question marks over Jaidi, a few lapses in concentration today.

My thoughts exactly, we need rickie or a tall striker as backup

Also though Punch was full of running and looked good, second half he fell away though, perhaps a fitness thing, as did Schniederlin.

You could tell the players lacked ideas of what to do, the problem is both LB and DC are small AND lack pace which means they primarily have to play of a big man IMO and don't work together.

Sod off.

We restricted them to one shot on goal, the entire match. Unfortunately they scored it but that's the way football goes sometimes. In any case, it was a very good defensive display.

Apart from that, we had several chances to score, Lallana had a shot that was only stopped by a fantastic save. We had a metric crapload of crosses and most days we'd have put at least one of them in. Two or three times near the end of the game they were scrambling to clear it out of the box, making last ditch tackles, most games we'd have put at least one of those in.

We're not just relying on Lambert, we scored from all over the pitch last season, but having the best player in the league back playing might have made a difference, no?

In any case, I stand by what I said, play like that and we'll be fine this season.

positives

-new signings looked good

fonte

most of 1st half

one of harder games without our two better player

-ves

lack of CM to grab hold of the game -still not convinced with Hammond

back up to RL

Jaidi's 2nd half very poor would have rathered Seaborne

Harding didn't look good 2nd half but think Dickson will be first choice when Lallana plays

Lack of Antonio wasn't the big problem to me today.

Now that I have had another cup of tea and a piece of toast.....

It ****es me off no end that we have lost today. I know its only one game and I am far from being negative about the season. Just ****ed off at the result and probably a natural reaction. I can't brush off defeat with a 'never mind' attitude, but like I said, I am not going to walk to the pier and jump.

Oh Saints, why do you do this to us every season? It was not a total surprise but it still really hurts......

It would be great to get off to a flying start at least once in a lifetime!

I never feel at ease until we get the first win and I hope that comes next week then we'll be up and running. If not........

All very well saying we scored all over the pitch last season. Lambert was playing in most of the games and put fear in defenders, so extra marking from them.

oyep tall striker and a pacey winger / striker ... theo walcott would be nice.. however.

I don't know, we got behind them well IMO, but the floated crosses were just not ideal for the two little men.

I would have perhaps tried putting Butterfield up front to hold it up ? Or perhaps Fonte when we were chasing the game ?

For me it was glaringly obvious that a lack of a tall hold up player was needed, Fallon was a prime example, if he hadn't one that header they wouldn't have scored.

Can someone please start a new thread for me titled "No bickering please"

LOL .... 187 posts ... NOOB ... ;) take away the bickering and this place would die!!!!

Brace yourself for wrist slitting, name calling, and offers to step outside for a chat like you've never seen before.!!

I'm more of a 'we're 9 points better off than after 1 game last season' mellow type of guy.

But that could be 4 very quick fire Old Speckled Hens coming home to roost!!

Attrocious second half, devoid of ideas, lack of pace and toothless up front.

Mind you, we were toothless throught the 90 mins,we could still be playing now and would not have scored.

For those that seem to be quite blase about the loss as i'ts only the first game of the sesaon i do not concur with that idea,3 points is 3 points be it the first game or the last, every point is vital, as last season shows by us narrowly missing out on the play offs.

Not good enough at all,we should be hitting the ground running,we are going to get pressure heaped on us this season by all, including some on here who believe we have a god given right to walk this league because of our squad.

Dickson and Harding played well together down the left side, great crosses at times but no point if you don't have someone with the height and stature to finish them off.

God we missed Lambert.

Puncheon was a waste of space today.

We need to act in the transfer market asap, not fanny about hoping we can do well with this sqaud.Few niggles and suspensions and we will be very ordinary.

Just because Norwich lost their opener does not make it alright for us to lose ours, especially in that manner.

Loads of sides are going to play like that at St Marys and we had better find an answer to that, otherwise combine that to the way we play away on **** poor surfaces our season will be very dissappointing.

AP,NC and ML act now,get your collective heads together and sort it soon as.

too much "pretty football " in midfield. Connolly and Barnard looked sharp - but predictable. Playing two "short men " up front against the giants in their defence only won free-kicks. We missed the muscle of Rickie getting into their back line and giving some stick to their central defnders. Dickson and Butterfield looked good, Schneiderlin slick passing, but why can't he shoot on target?.

ah well 3 points lost ...135 left to win !
