Smirking_Saint Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I just find CEC to be very much a soap box preacher who only only cares for his own opinion one which at times i find flawed, i am more than willing to debate with most people on here and can quite happily admit when i am wrong etc and see both sides. CEC however comes across as f*cking arrogant.

Chez Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I think 4-4-2 is a dated formation and the top clubs seem to be moving with the time and adapting. Personally i think we would be better off 'doing a Chelsea' and going 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 when attacking. agreed. Wotton freed Morgan and Hammond to charge forward. It also allowed us to totally dominate posession and knacker teams out. We then switched to 4-4-2 to great effect when we had failed to get the goal we needed.

Agreed again, however if we are going to play this way (i hope we do) i would feel much happier with a much more mobile and technically gifted player at the back, but perhaps one that holds Wottons determination at times.

The record shows that when someone makes a good point I do take it on board . When you on the other hand tried to defend a blatant attack on freedom of speech for some reason I did "completely disregard" you because you were completely wrong . If you or anybody else want to have a unjustified 'pop' at me then fine go ahead - but understand this - I'm very likely to reflect that exact attitude right back to it's sender .

With the current personel Schiederlin could play the holding role with Hammond and Lallana in the middle and Puncheon and Dickson out wide. Although ideally would like another attacking CM as felt Lallana and Puncheon switched well last season and always the option to go 4-4-2 if need be with Barnard and Connolly on the bench. The players we have are suited to this system better and no need for a big lump up front, although obviously RL will be first choice, Barnard could also do the job up front if need be.
Chez Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 With the current personel Schiederlin could play the holding role anyone else think that Morgan might be better in the more attacking midfield role? He has the ability to do things and I'd liek to see those `things' further up the field.

That said, having him play a deeper role alongside a hilding midfielder may give him an opportunity to pick a pass and springboard attacks.
lambertsrightleg Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 the 4-5-1/4-3-3 would work if we actually had a winger with pace who could beat the full back and then cross on his stronger foot. puncheon and lallana tend to cut inside a bit too much for my liking and dickson didn't actually beat the full back at all on saturday. bring back waigo and antonio!!
the saint in winchester Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 4-2-3-1 as a formation for me, every time. Yes, we badly missed Antonio on Saturday. His pace, his enthusiasm. No one can convince me Puncheon is a better option on the right.
Andy_Porter Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 If we're going to play 4-2-3-1 we need one more player to play in the '3', pushing Schneiderlin forward is an option but I'd rather we get a winger in and move Puncheon or Lallana inside.
Sevvy Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Putting the ball in the back of the oppositions net usually works for me

He has the ability to do things and I'd liek to see those `things' further up the field. The Dutch duo tried him in that position - I think he has what it takes to develop as Fabregas has done but he always seems to pull out of a forward run or a one-two that the holding man role is fast becoming second nature.

Had one of his best games in a Southampton shirt pushed forward against Southend, then against Oldham he was equally good.

And looked bloody fantastic ?
OldNick Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 anyone else think that Morgan might be better in the more attacking midfield role? Plymouth did the job all team,s will do at SMS. Shut up shop and let us play our pretty football 35yds from goal, they will fill the box and stop us getting the ball to our forwards, then nick a goal from a couple of attacks. You can talk about morgan and his position to the cows come home but unless you have pace up front that hurts/scares the opposition we will have lots more of these debates.Since we dropped from the PL we have not played the way most teams get out of these leagues, a big brute of a centre forward with players around him to take advantage.

Really ?? No Lambert, Lallana, Puncheon then ?
OldNick Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Really ?? No Lambert, Lallana, Puncheon then ? 2 of those didn't start saturday and we have no back up to Lambert if he is not fit. Puncheon could not out run his defender and so our attacks were nullified. I am not a fan who thinks we are the best team in this league, i am alarmed at the lack of pace and would like the club to strengthen in a few areas. It was alarming that Barnard and Connelly did not get a sniff and showed our over reliance on RL.
Chez Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 It was alarming that Barnard and Connelly did not get a sniff and showed our over reliance on RL.anyone that went to Gillingham already knew that this partnership was going to struggle to work. You only have to look at the problems Davis had - no one to kick to - to know that an alternative to Lambert is a must unless we are hopeful of another season of 40+ games from him.
Chez Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 How can we play Morgan in an attacking midfield role when he he doesn't know how to put the ball in the net? has he had that many chances from 15 yards Nearly all his chots are from miles out.

I was speaking in general really, that IS the set up we are utilising, all though we are probably a tad more technical then a lot of the teams in this league. I am suprised many believed Puncheon had such a poor game, i thought he did as well as he could given the fact that the movement in front of him was terrible, yes Lallana made a difference when he came on but even he was restricted to shooting outside the box . DC and LB are not a good pairing together, they do a good job when playing alongside Rickie but for me that is it. If we have to rely on them too much this season we are in trouble. We need backup for rickie and perhaps a young pacy striker IMO. A new quick winger will always be a good signing, especially for us as we seem to lack pace (though Ox apparantly has it in abundence) but i don't think it would have changed much against Plymouth, it was so glaringly obvious we needed someone to hold the ball up and Pardew couldn't do anything about it.

I didn't mean to give the impression that JP had a bad game, as I thought he was oK but his speed does seem to have dropped. Had we had a forward who had aerial ability im sure we would be all upbeat as the crosses were dangerous and waiting to be be claimed, our two small forwards had no chance.DH should have done better with his free header, as in most of these games we need to score first so the opposition have to come out of their shell.

DH worries me a little, i cannot fault the guys commitment and to be fair he is a good player for this division, however i wonder if he is good enough technically to compete at both the top end of league 1 and on up into the NPC ?? The more i see of him the more i think my worries have legs. For me he is all huff and puff and no end product. His first touch seems to have improved however.

Stu Man Do Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Waigo played 83 mins for Fiorentina on Saturday vs Spurs setting up the first goal so unfortunately looks like there is little prospect of him returning :-( I agree fully that he would have made a difference on saturday as the wings weren't really the problem. We really need someone who can hold the ball up/ a bigger striker as back up for RL to actually get on the end of the crosses we were putting in for the first 45 mins.

You only have to look at the problems Davis had - no one to kick to - to know that an alternative to Lambert is a must unless we are hopeful of another season of 40+ games from him. Davis seemed to be trying to find Puncheon a lot, but without Lambert he really should be playing it short to the defenders and letting us build play from the back and through midfield. Can't say I see the point of hoofing it to a forward who has less than 50% chance of winning the ball and keeping possession.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 14 August, 2010 Posted 14 August, 2010 Should have scored according to SSN.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 14 August, 2010 Posted 14 August, 2010 is "freedom of speech" and saints the new fashion since when has it ever been a case of "freedom of speech" at saints..or even on here..? Wasn't it Steve Grant who said something along the lines of "There's no democracy on here" ?
David Strover Posted 14 August, 2010 Posted 14 August, 2010 I said that too - and businesses don't run as democracies either and most countries don't for a larger part of the time either because it doesn't work. Everytime you make a decesion who have to get the opinons and views of the all the people involved and then act on it - hmmmm. WIFM
