Hatch Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Does it really cost over £50 from Eastleigh to London day return on the train! or is my googling not up to scratch.
stevegrant Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Depends what time you're travelling and on what day. If you travel at peak time, i.e. before 10am on a weekday, it'll be about £60 return. Off-peak, it can be as little as £20 return with a network railcard or group saver.
Hatch Posted 6 August, 2010 Author Posted 6 August, 2010 peak time, bloody scandalous. I'll Stick with the car then.
Turkish Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 A day travel card cost me just under £40 from Parkway last week, had to be in Old Street for a meeting at 11 so was off peak rates.
Turkish Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 peak time, bloody scandalous. I'll Stick with the car then. Where have you got to go? I usually Park at Richmond, £13 for the day, although a colleague on mine drives into Hammersmith where it's a quid an hour he says. Traffic can be sh*t on the way out though if after 4ish.
fish fingers Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 It cost me £90 to get a return from Bournemouth to Waterloo recently. Last minute and got a 7am train from Bournemouth. Luckilly i didn't have to pay.
Draino76 Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Well if peak time is after 09.30, and you know a week in advance or so; google megatrain for a £2 day return. HTH.x
Thedelldays Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 I once had a short notice job in glasgow.....the MoD paid my ticket..which on the day cost £300 for a return from portsmouth southsea to glasgow.. three hundred fecking quid....and that did not even guarantee a seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
angelman Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Mrs booked one last Friday for travel today and I think (off-peak) it was £37 return from New Milton. I find trains overly expensive and too complicated. I remember when it was £15-17 for a day return (and no doubt some will remember when it was a few shillings), but £37!
Saint_Ash Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Well if peak time is after 09.30, and you know a week in advance or so; google megatrain for a £2 day return. HTH.x Went from So'ton central to London Waterloo last weekend for 2 quid return. Megatrain is the way forward. Going in another couple of weeks again, this time it's a 5er return though! Getting expensive.
Nexstar Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Went from So'ton central to London Waterloo last weekend for 2 quid return. Megatrain is the way forward. Going in another couple of weeks again, this time it's a 5er return though! Getting expensive. Exactly this, booked So'ton - Waterloo today for the first week in September. Going up Tuesday coming back Wednesday, £2 total.
Draino76 Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Living in London now I can get a £2 return to Southampton for the midweek games now. Draino76 likes this.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Went up Wednesday - 0955 from Soton - Waterloo for 1130. £6...got to Waterloo - Travelcard was an extra £6. Bargain. Came back via Victoria on Nat Express - 2hr journey, £5. Megatrain rocks. Trainline quoted £34 for same journey.
hamster Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Network Railcard: "A Network Railcard gives you 1/3 off most rail fares for journeys in the Network Railcard area and can also save you money on trips to and around London. The Network Railcard costs £25 and is valid for 12 months." "The added benefit is that up to three adults can travel with you and they will also get 1/3 off their rail fare. Plus, you can take up to four children (aged 5 to 15 years) with you and save 60% on each child fare." "You can travel any time on weekends and public holidays or from 10.00am Monday to Friday." Not as cheap as Mega but more frequent if you want more choice. Park at Soton Parkway on Saturdays and Sundays, free of charge (last time I used it). Also, I recomend getting one of these freebies if you plan to eat at a station food outlet: http://www.bitecard.co.uk/home.asp **20% OFF**
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 Living in London now I can get a £2 return to Southampton for the midweek games now. Draino76 likes this. I don't think you can get a late enough return?
Saint-scooby Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/megatrain.aspx
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 I commute to London daily from Winchester. It works out a lot cheaper to buy a return to Basingstoke and a return from there to Waterloo. About 35 I think, 20ish with a railcard If you do this make sure the train you catch calls actually does call at Basingstoke. If you want to use the underground an oyster card may well be cheaper than a travelcard, depending on where you are going. Hope this helps.
Draino76 Posted 6 August, 2010 Posted 6 August, 2010 I don't think you can get a late enough return? There is a train after the Bournemouth game from Southampton Central to Waterloo 21.55 for £4.00 at the moment, I'm sure there were later ones a couple of weeks ago.
Jez Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Went from So'ton central to London Waterloo last weekend for 2 quid return. Megatrain is the way forward. Going in another couple of weeks again, this time it's a 5er return though! Getting expensive. You best not be getting the same train as me, I'll be most upset. ps this is my 5th post today - what happend to the 3 post per day limit?
benjii Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Bristol to Paddington peak day return is about £160. Bargain, not, I don't think.
mcjwills Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Wife and daughter went to London via Megabus on the train and it cost them £4.50 for both of them £2.00 e/w and a booking fee of 50p Well ripped off with the 50p booking fee
Petersfield Saint Posted 10 August, 2010 Posted 10 August, 2010 Where have you got to go? I usually Park at Richmond, £13 for the day, although a colleague on mine drives into Hammersmith where it's a quid an hour he says. Traffic can be sh*t on the way out though if after 4ish. Park in the Kings Mall multi-storey in Hammersmith - there are always spaces and from memory it's only about £8 for the whole day - then tube in. Oyster card is cheaper if you're just doing the one tube journey; travelcard better if you're going to be on and off the tube all day.
