hypochondriac Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Did you miss the part where I said that they would sit up and take notice when we were winning matches on the way up the Championship and into the Premiership? But I agree that where we are now isn't much cause for them to get excited. For them, they mainly like to print stories of bad news, whereas a stable, well financed club like us isn't what they're after anyway. Financially maybe.
FloridaMarlin Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I agree with you, it doesn't matter. These papers make it sound like it will be impossible to see images of the game. Which is simply wrong because it is free local/national TV and the internet in many places including the Saints website which has match photos. And those pictures will be of what?

Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Good on Plymouth for running this story. Cortese is becoming an embarrassment. yeah...such a big deal that on PASOTI a whole 56 posts by about 15 different people commented on it yeah..massive deal..it is massive news around the country.. oooooor, some dont actually care..????
dune Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 If your read the article dulldays you'll see that Celtic tried doing what Cortese has done and the press didn't buy the images so they are not going to cave in to a jumped up upstart like Cortese. All his decision has achieved is to make enemies and making enemies of the English press pack isn't a clever thing to do. I predict he will rue the day he took them on.

Celtic and other clubs that have tried press bans, have kit sponsors. When the press put a ban on them the clubs would come under pressure from their sponsors who wouldn't be getting the exposure of the companies name on the shirt. Saints don't have a shirt sponsor.
Norm Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Taken from the PA article, 'The official stance is that the club are unhappy with external organisations using images of their players. Open up today's match programme and you will find pictures of Peter Reid, Carl Fletcher and Bondz N'Gala, pictures taken by Disco Dave and used by Southampton without our permission'. Oh dear! Kettle-black-pot Can't say I'm impressed with SFC doing this. Are we really that desperate for revenue?

dune Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 dulldays - reported to the mods How can you report yourself?
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I bet we have a sponsor next season when Cortese brings out a new shirt. And any new sponsor Saints have in 2011/12 will be fully aware of the situation before they agree to sign the deal with Saints. So will be happy with it or they wouldn't sign. With Celtic and every other club that has tried this in the past the situation happened to an existing sponsor who agreed to sponsor the club before the ban on press.

Do you think having close to zero pictures in the national press will increase or decrease the amount the club will get for sponsorship?
Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Do you think having close to zero pictures in the national press will increase or decrease the amount the club will get for sponsorship? were we not close to zero pictures in the press anyway...?
aintforever Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 were we not close to zero pictures in the press anyway...? We will get much less now. Screen grabs in the Echo, none in the Plymouth papers. I expect our rare appearance in a national will not happen at all. It can only have a negative effect.
Chez Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Saints don't have a shirt sponsor. not this season, but negotiations for next season are going to start at some point and they are going to be less than impressed if there is a media backlash and this could effect potential income.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 (edited) Do you think having close to zero pictures in the national press will increase or decrease the amount the club will get for sponsorship? Will the BBC, Sky etc stop showing Saints? No. Will pictures of Saints League One games not be available anywhere? No. Fans may not be able to see them in some media sources, but will if they look elsewhere. It is just those that don't like it that are kicking up a fuss, I'm sure they know it means fans will just look elsewhere and cost them in revenue. Sponsorship deals in League One don't make the club much money, nor do they in the Championship relative to the amount of money Liebherr has put in. If Saints get back to the Premiership and are playing Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool do you really think a media ban will still see papers refusing to buy pictures of St Mary's games? I don't. Will Saints in League One, the press doesn't care if it doesn't get pictures of Rochdale at St Mary's, not does it when Celtic play St Mirren. But when Saints play Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea they will. Cortese is just preparing the club for what he hopes the investment of Liebherr will bring in the future. For them, they mainly like to print stories of bad news, whereas a stable, well financed club like us isn't what they're after anyway. Doesn't "on the way up to the Championship" mean being in league one these days then? Anyway, the media won't actually give two shi t s about us when we make it to the Prem either, just like they don't give two sh its about Blackburn, or Wigan, or Wolves, or Sunderland. Anyway, this dopey old ban thing will be long forgotten by then. I doubt it will survive three or four more home games.
cornishsailor Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3086603/Opposition-0-Plymouth-1.html Are you sure this is the kind of press reporting you want?
SuperMikey Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3086603/Opposition-0-Plymouth-1.html Are you sure this is the kind of press reporting you want? FFS, how is this going to "drive fans away"? The press are just throwing their toys out of the pram. Well, I say 'the press', what I really mean is 'the gutter press'.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3086603/Opposition-0-Plymouth-1.html This senseless move will not make him extra money but it will turn the fans and, more importantly, sponsors away from the club. I don't see why it will turn fans away from the club. Pictures and video are available of the the game for fans to see in a variety of other places. The Sun also forgets Saints don't have a shirt sponsor. I doubt Cortese cares and is probably annoyed with the way the media makes up rubbish like the whole unsubstantiated rumours about him and Pardew in the summer.
Barry the Badger Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I am finding this all rather amusing really. Kind of odd, but quite funny. Poor old Plymouth really have got their knickers in a twist.... and for THE SUN to be coming over all holier than thou is also fairly comedic. I would rather we didn't make too many enemies, but we've been a well liked family club in the past and look where that got us!
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I don't think this is the best way to persuade someone reverse a decision... What they don't need is a dictator who thinks he knows what's best for the club.
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 If Cortese sticks to his guns I don't think many in the press will persist with this. They will soon get bored or forget due to Saints being a 3rd tier team and they will move onto something else. Especially when Saints start playing bigger teams. I bet they are more willing to pay for photos if Saints play a big team in one of the cups or progress up through the leagues.
hypochondriac Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 And yet people continue to defend this. I really can't understand some people.
Matthew Le God Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 And yet people continue to defend this. I really can't understand some people. You have only heard one side of the story so far.
chocco boxo Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 The Sun will soon forget, will they print a special edition when we get promoted or win the JPT again??? Soon more clubs will be doing this if it is such a money spinner? However it does seem NC feels better when he is upsetting people! Southampton FC friendly family club, oh those were the days.
Secret Site Agent Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Got to be honest, I have been more in favour of NC lately but even this one I think is daft.
70's Mike Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Lots of complacency on here, as SFC once again sets itself against the football conventions and traditions it ended in tears last time lets hope history does not repeat itself
lordswoodsaints Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Because we are a l1 club we don't get much page space in the red tops anyway and rarely are there any photos. The only papers that go into detail is the echo and the pink,so this is obviously another swipe at them. Am I right in saying that the echo is free to sell any pictures to whoever they wish? Perhaps this is the issue,NC may be ****ed off that the echo is free to sell images and make money?? If I was the editor of the echo I would employ an unknown photographer and buy him a ticket and tell him to take photos from the stand just to **** cortese off.

I bet they are more willing to pay for photos if Saints play a big team in one of the cups or progress up through the leagues. The papers will happily go all season without printing a single picture of a Saints player from St Mary's, especially if opposition clubs follow Plymouth's lead. You have only heard one side of the story so far. Err, no we haven't. We've heard the announcement from your favourite news source, the super corporate official site, about the ban and the reasons behind it and we are beginning to see the response from the clubs and the media outlets. That's two sides to the story. Both sides to the story. We've all heard both. You've said this about five times on this thread, and apart from your favourite news source, the corporate OS (they have exclusive video interviews with the advertising sales manager - take that, BBC!) those images from the game are nowhere. And the media making up rubbish. Boo hoo. Real Madrid, Inter milan, Man United and Chelsea just about live with it, so I think a nondescript League One club could too. Listen, this is how the real world works, we're not in a computer game now.

I was catting to a steward on saturday and he told me they have been asked to look out for people taking photos from the stands and deal with them. He did say the mentioned large cameras with big lenses but who is to say what is a press camera and what is not. All a bit silly if you ask me.
JibMcdo Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Got to be honest, I have been more in favour of NC lately but even this one I think is daft. Yep, I agree, this is an absolute embarrasment for the club and quite ridiculous.
hamster Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Can I ask if this site has to pay image rights for reproducing pictures from the saintsfc.co.uk site? They are frequently posted up in caption threads (amongst others), some of the suggested captions could perhaps be construed as derogatory (not sure if that's the correct word), albeit that not being the intention. So, are sites such this permitted to use them?
Wes Tender Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Financially maybe. Yes, of course we're financially stable, but I'd be pleased to hear how in your opinion we are unstable otherwise. Seems to me that we have a settled team, have been able to keep the players we wanted to stay, the same manager, new personnel appointed to key administrative posts, etc. Surely you cannot possibly be referring to a few dissenting posts on here as being indicative of us being unstable?
Doctoroncall Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Sponsorship deals in League One don't make the club much money, nor do they in the Championship relative to the amount of money Liebherr has put in. And any new sponsor Saints have in 2011/12 will be fully aware of the situation before they agree to sign the deal with Saints. So will be happy with it or they wouldn't sign. If Saints get back to the Premiership and are playing Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool do you really think a media ban will still see papers refusing to buy pictures of St Mary's games? I don't. There are many that don't, including the evidence of Celtic, a club which has tried to do it this way and failed. What makes you think Saints will succeed? Will Saints in League One, the press doesn't care if it doesn't get pictures of Rochdale at St Mary's, not does it when Celtic play St Mirren. But when Saints play Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea they will. Cortese is just preparing the club for what he hopes the investment of Liebherr will bring in the future. Again, how much do you think this revenue stream will bring in? For all the negative news I don't think it's worth it.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Quite funny that everyone gets so ****ed off that they are going to miss a fortnightly 200 pixel pic of Dan Harding holding off a Rochdale player.
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Once again it is the same people who have set their internet persona up to blindly defend Cortese whenever someone has a bad word to say about him. Seriously Dulldays, Matthew Le God, DPS... get a life. I told you there would be lots of " I told you so " moments over the course of the season, and this is the first, on the very first day of the season. It has been tried before ( although not to the extent of SFC's ban, locals were still allowed in at least ) and it failed massively for Celtic, Leeds and Bristol. There is no commercial value to Saints and papers won't bother their arse with us. Our matchday shots are worth the square root of fook all. I don't want us to be a cute little family club, but p!ssing off the national press for no other reason but arrogance is just retarded.
rallyboy Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Many clubs have tried similar things over the last twenty years and each and every one has been forced into a U-turn - there should have been a clue there. And if there are people on here who think it doesn't matter that Southampton FC is making enemies at an alarming rate for no reason - well it does. It's unwise to go to war with people who buy ink in bulk, they can create any damaging image of the club they want and that has clear commercial implications. I don't want us booed everywhere we go because the Sun says we're a monster that thinks itself too important for the division. It's no longer a local storm-in-a-teacup dispute, it's now the Echo PLUS the entire national print media V Cortese, and his boss may be less happy about that.
exit2 Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Just posted this on the other thread. It seems the local agency that were going to distibute the images for the club have now pulled out http://www.sportsjournalists.co.uk/blog/?p=2696
buctootim Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Maybe Saints need a structure like many top companies have - a young dynamic and pushy CEO advised by an older, experienced and more cautious Chairman. I like a great deal of what Cortese has done, but on the face of it this isnt the best.
Hatch Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 LOL at The Sun referring to the match as The Opposition versus Plymouth .
Doctoroncall Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 Quite funny that everyone gets so ****ed off that they are going to miss a fortnightly 200 pixel pic of Dan Harding holding off a Rochdale player. Not as funny as one person showing his myopic view while many others debate the wider issues.
georgeweahscousin Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 The Sun taking the moral high ground. Irony Overload. I would rather that pathetic rag had nothing to do with my club anyway, anyone who reads it could do with a life re-evaluation anyway.
boxosponge Posted 9 August, 2010 Posted 9 August, 2010 (edited) I told you there would be lots of " I told you so " moments over the course of the season, and this is the first Sorry old chap, it doesn't readily spring to mind where you said this. There is so much bull**** spouted on his forum of late that to go through each and every post is something I simply can't be bothered to do even had I the time to waste. But as today I'm at a bit of a loose end can I ask you to post up a link to it perhaps, because it would seem to have been a post that I would have greatly enjoyed reading?
