trogmite Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 It has always surprised me that football has gone to great lengths to ensure it makes money from moving footage of their players, but has had a laissez faire attitude to stills even though both Sky and newspapers are seeking to make a profit from the game. The same applies to radio coverage, where that has always been well controlled (assuming anyway was interested in broadcasting the game). My only concern is the number of photographers at the game, not who will now make money from the images. I don't want one photographer and therefore one viewpoint. I would trust a comment about Saints from this Board before any newspaper article because I long ago gave up believing that there was any value in buying newspapers. If I actually had a care, it would be that Saints fans in the stadium were allowed to take as many pictures as they liked, as long as they were for private and non-commercial use e.g. putting them up on a dedicated part of this Board. The rest of the media jackals can cough up for Markus.
Matthew Le God Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 (edited) Argyle have now put this on their official site... http://www.pafc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10364~2114230,00.html Whole article is wrong. It claims fans of Saints and Argyle can't see images of the game. Anyone can see images of the game for free on Sky Sports News or BBC and any publication that does buy them. Or here... http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/Gallery/0,,10280~2114628,00.html Just because the local Plymouth paper doesn't have them doesn't mean people miss out. Badger Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 Seems like a pretty horrendous PR Gaff. Totally agree. I might support this measure if we were in the Prem and NC was taking this stance, but at L1 level it really does smack of trying to be a 'Billy Bigbollicks' taking advantage of Hartlepool,Argyle etc, who have genuine fans who want to read about their team when playing at SMS. A little humility now,and there will be a feeling of goodwill towards the club IF we overcome the last few seasons troubles and climb back up the league.Continue with this stance and we will be seen as grabbing bunch ofA-holes,with all others rejoicing at our failure to match our own stated ambitions (as we did today).
saint_mears Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 At the game today and i heard through a sauce that this whole thing has been a total disaster. The agency that Cortese asked to act for them have refused to do so because of the wholesale ban on photographers.

aintforever Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 "The official stance is that the club are unhappy with external organisations using images of their players. Open up today's match programme and you will find pictures of Peter Reid, Carl Fletcher and Bondz N'Gala, pictures taken by Disco Dave and used by Southampton without our permission." Ban other photographers then use their photography in your own matchday programme - nice one Nicola.

S-Clarke Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 you sound like a whizz in how this business works...how does it work...? but honestly dd, this seems like a totally stupid move that will only create enemies in the long run. Is that what we want?
saint_mears Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 Who took these then? http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/Gallery/0,,10280~2114628,00.html Probably the usual photographer but they are not willing to act as a supplier to others as SFC wanted them too.
aintforever Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 you sound like a whizz in how this business works...how does it work...? It seems pretty clear how it works from that article... "As a media team, we do our best to make journalists, broadcasters, photographers and officials from visiting clubs welcome." Makes more sense than each club banning other photographers then making them pay for pics. Any money the club makes it will have to spend for pics any way.
once_bitterne Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 That article on the Plymouth os has now been removed....

Matthew Le God Posted 7 August, 2010 Posted 7 August, 2010 http://www.sportsjournalists.co.uk/blog/?p=2695 I think they don't realise Saints don't have a shirt sponsor, so doesn't matter in that sense so strange to use that in an argument.
CB Fry Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Argyle have now put this on their official site... http://www.pafc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10364~2114230,00.html Whole article is wrong. I can't see any images from the game on the BBC or Sky website. i doubt either company will entertain paying some piffling League One club for oh-so precious pictures of their home matches. Neither will the nationals. Cortese has dropped a b ollo ck here. An arrogant, pointless bo lloc k. No sensible business reason, and of zero benefit to performance on the pitch. Utterly, utterly pointless.
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Nice to see the Echo sticking 2 fingers up at Cortese and printing screenshots from Sky coverage instead of buying the images. Looking through a few Nationals today, they have also stuck 2 fingers up at Cortese and printed tiny articles with no pictures as well. And I have heard the same story that a couple of posters have mentioned... The press association kicked off at Digital South and as a result they have refused to take the pictures. I imagine the club hired a freelancer or done them themselves for the website. Top business decision by our leader. No commercial reasons for this decision by the club, our photo's are worth fook all, we are in League 1 ffs. It's just Cortese thinking he can control and manipulate the English press... which of course he can't and he will be forced into running back with his tail between his legs.
Deppo Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Looking through a few Nationals today, they have also stuck 2 fingers up at Cortese and printed tiny articles with no pictures as well. That's a shame. I remember before this ban, when we had a double-page, full-colour spread in all of the Nationals after every game.
shirleysfc Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Maybe, just maybe, this wasn't NC's idea? I'm guessing he probably signed off the idea but maybe http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2096187,00.html or one of the other newish arrivals come up with these plans? Don't get me wrong I don't think what the club are doing with the pictures is a good idea, I'm just questioning the fact that all the decisions come directly from NC. Before anyone just quotes the stuff about the club being NC's baby blah blah blah, explain to me why we're recuiting top UEFA marketing agents if they're not making decisions etc? Better still explain to me why someone like this guy would leave UEFA to become NC's yes man?
dune Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 This is the problem i have with Cortese. I'm sure what he does is with the right intentions, but he half goes about things the completely wrong way half the time. I would suggest Nicola put's a sign on his office wall "Make sure your brain is engaged before putting your mouth into gear". He's worse than Rupert Lowe and shows no sign of learning from his mistakes.

No he won't. We will have a successful season and the media will be banging on our door for stories to fill their rags. If they don't they will just be cutting off their nose to spite their face. It is they who need to sell extra newspapers, whereas the media will not be affecting our attendances if we are winning matches and climbing towards the Championship and then the Premiership.

My point still stands though, maybe it was another one of the execs? Before I get accused of being an NC luvvie (or whatever b*ll sh*t phrase is being used to describe those who don't blame him for everything that is wrong with the club) I'm just trying to be objective and ask where these ideas come from in the first place?

Wes Tender Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 That's a shame. I remember before this ban, when we had a double-page, full-colour spread in all of the Nationals after every game. Do I detect just a smidgeon of sarcasm there, Deppo? That must have been the glory days when we were in the Premiership and the Nationals were investigating the dodginess of the reverse takeover, writing articles quoting Graham Souness saying that he hadn't come across anybody else called Rupert in football, investigations into Wiseman's term as chairman of the FA, betting scandals involving Bruce Grobelaar when he was here, etc. We were also newsworthy when we were in the Fizzy Pop division because of the EGM and the takeover by Wilde, the infighting between the various egos, the madcap Dutch experiment and playing the kids. It went very quite last season once stability had replaced strife. Now all they can do is gnaw on the bone about petty little incidents like this, or call us the Manchester City of the third division. Good, isn't it?

I was talking with some mates who are football mad whilst watching argyle rob points from us...when I told them about it, their reaction was.."oh..and"... sure that was a couple of mates..but apart from this message board have not really seen much condemnation of it...sure some have given it a bit of stick..but nothing more really lol at those who thing cortese is on a campaign to control the british press...lol indeed. he is trying new ways to make money...english football is eating itself and too stuck in its ways to accept change

"This raises serious issues about Freedom of the Press" ??????? Really. This would be the same press which feels it has a right to print lies, innuendo and invade privacy "in the public interest". To then try to take the moral highground over a football match, a "product" where the rights owners seek (whether ill judged or not) to protect thier own commercial interests is, frankly, laughable. TDD is right, this will not register outside the confines of this forum in 2 weeks time. The arguement about us only being a L1 club is irrelevent. We know what NC is trying to do is put in place the right infrastructure now for when we do hit the big time. Just out of interest, what is the practice on the continent? Edited 8 August, 2010 by Faz Fat finger sybdrome
Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 TDD is right, this will not register outside the confines of this forum in 2 weeks time. As long as the ban remains it will keep coming back. In two weeks time Saints play Leyton Orient at St Mary's, it will all come back then when their local papers are stopped from taking photos at St Mary's. This will continue for each and every home game this season.

Deppo Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 As long as everything Cortese does continues to upset dune, Dave Benson Phillips and alpine saint, I think we can all agree it is worth alienating the entire Fourth Estate in the process. It's just a small sacrifice for the pleasure of watching their reactions on here.

saint_mears Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I'm not bothered about the press, it's more what dumb decisions like this say about our chairman. Exactly especially when we have one of the most expensive sport pr companies around to stop this ****te from happening.

I agree with you, it doesn't matter. These papers make it sound like it will be impossible to see images of the game. Which is simply wrong because it is free local/national TV and the internet in many places including the Saints website which has match photos.
cornishsailor Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 I'm past the days of checking what the papers say after a match but I'm sure lots of your fans still do, well after a good win anyway. I know The Observer (full page on Sheff.W) and The Sunday Mirror made no mention of the match, were they the only ones? If this is the start of a concerted effort to blank all reports from SMS I reckon a few of you that support this move may change your tune. I somehow doubt Digital South will be taking many pics of away goals, again I think you'd be annoyed if you were denied those images from other clubs. PS Thanks for the 3 points...again!!
Andy_Porter Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 The pink had screen caps from Sky as their only pictures of the game.
Wes Tender Posted 8 August, 2010 Posted 8 August, 2010 Delusional Saints fan alert. We're in league one and "the media" couldn't give two sh its about us. Did you miss the part where I said that they would sit up and take notice when we were winning matches on the way up the Championship and into the Premiership? But I agree that where we are now isn't much cause for them to get excited. For them, they mainly like to print stories of bad news, whereas a stable, well financed club like us isn't what they're after anyway.
