They're big favourites to win the League One championship, but Alan Pardew is still not quite happy with his Southampton squad and is looking to bring in two new signings. Elsewhere, a prodigal son returns to Cardiff, and Preston are after a striker...

Southampton are reported to have bid around £500,000 for Reading winger Michail Antonio, who spent most of last season on loan at St Mary's. The Saints are also in talks with Wycombe Wanderers over England Under-19 international Matt Phillips, a player we already reported as attracting attention.

Can someone paste it? Can't get onto UK betting sites from where I am.

I got my hopes up when I saw the title of this thread but its only a rumour...shame. I heard we have had a bid for Antonio already rejected this is just recycling old news. But still its better than no news.

Wouldn't have Antonio signed months ago if we were going to get him back?

Reading possibly extended his contract so they could look at him in pre-season and if they didnt want him after that could demand a transfer fee from us.

Posted

I dont expect this to be true given the source.........but i would love it to be.

This would be the icing on the cake......I cant see us paying £500k for what in reality is a Reading reserve though.

but with Antonio its all about potential - he's only 20 - and he will be on the fringes of the Reading squad this season - whereas with Saints he knows he will play and maybe win something!

I think Reading took up the option of an extra year that was in his contract mostly so that we would have to pay more for him - rather than us get him on free transfer and then have an U23 development fee set by tribunal.

It's hopefully just a case of brinkmamship and negotiations now!

Whats happened to Waigo though? It sounded like he was going to make a return.

If we end up with Waigo and Antonio coming back - and add Matt Phillips as well that will be a great news! Options of the bench indeed!

Hopefully thats true......my gut feeling is that IF we do get him back it will be a Transfer deadline day deal.

Would be a very good pair of signings if true, both promising young wingers with big things ahead of them. As said earlier in the thread, all we'd then need would be cover/challenge for CM and possibly a striker and we're done!

I'd love to see Antonio back, I don't know much about the other lad but if it frees up Lallana or Puncheon to move inside and cover injuries it must be a good thing.

If we could add those two we would be sorted IMO. Butterfield,Wotton, Hammond, Schneiderlin and Puncheon can all play in the middle and then Puncheon, Lallana, Antonio, Oxo-Chamberlain and Phillips can cover the wide positions, still with people like McNish, Gobern (is he still here), Mills, Dickson etc who can do a decent enough job in midfield.

Would be a massive boost before the big game on Saturday.

I really can't see how we're going to attract a midfielder to play second fiddle to Schneiderlin and Hammond, someone like Danns or Stock would want to play every week as do Schneiderlin and Hammond... I think we will have to settle with Butterfield, Puncheon and Wotton as backup for those two.

I'm sure a L2/BSP midfielder would jump at the chance of L1 football and probably promotion in return for being a sub most weeks. Plenty of young, promising CMs in the lower leagues WCDAJFU.

I read about Philips and antonnio on the saintslist this morning. long before it was reported on here. The poster seemed to indicate that it had come form another forum. I assumed that it was from this forum but seemingly not. It would be good if true but until it happens I will take it with a pinch of salt.

what happened to vassel and that skate clown who was going to join us did they not originate from betfair?

I heard Antonio asked by a fan at weekend if he was coming back, he said he didn't know, smiling.

I don't expect him to openly update fans - but if he was definately staying I guess he would easily say no.

Phillips was given the new number 18 for the 2009–10 season and has continued his good form from last season starting on both flanks for Wycombe.

It is rumoured that Wycombe have agreed a fee of £525,000 with Southampton for the sale of Phillips, and this deal to be concluded before the season opener on Saturday 7th August 2010. Matt wished to stay with Wycombe however the deal was sealed when NC offered him a cornetto and half a packet of worcester sauce crisps

Michail Antonio is going places for sure - I can only hope he can drag us along with him .

I seriously doubt that £500k will be enough , indeed If I were a Reading Fan I'd want to see a pretty substantial 'sell-on' clause included in the contract whatever the eventual transfer fee is .

Hard to value

+ve's young, decent player

-ve's only year on contract, wanted to stay here, before us was basically non-league 20 year old, not likely to be regular first 11

Guess we would not want to pay £500k or more

Pardew said himself that we're short of cover on the wings. We've not really made any signings for that position but lost two players (Waigo and Antonio), with Lallana also out for a while yet. Don't see why we wouldn't sign both.

Posted
according to some Reading fans, we have indeed bid 500k for Antonio.

i doubt we'll get both though, surely it's 1 or the other?

My thinking too........

Posted
I so hope this is true - would be very happy.

We would only need cover for Morgan and Bart's signature then, from my perspective.

Careful, old chap. You could ruin your hard-earned reputation. ;)

Indeed were rumors we had a bid accepted for antonio before betfair put it up.

would love both these guys, would mean puncheon could play CM or maybe play one less CM and play lallana in AMC.

Posted

It's on betfair so in all probability it ain't going to happen. 500K for Antonio seems fair - maybe chuck in 10% sell on, and the same again for Phillips is also fair.

We could do with both. Pardew used Antonio a lot as a striker and although he's no cover for Lambert he can do a job up front if needed. If either were true then I'd be happy.

Yes, it would be great to get Antonio back - he had something about him and he gained much by being here. However, I am afraid to say I don't believe the rumour because it is exactly that - a rumour - and nowadays rumours tend not to be true. I know nothing about the other boy - Phillips. Still concerned we don't have a player to challenge Spiderman and Hammond.

Puncheon isn't very efficient in CM, we know that as a FACT

I must be looking at the wrong squad then as I thought we are desperately short 1 CB, 1 CM (possibly 2), 1 LW and an alternative to Rickie? :-s

he'd better be good for all that, we could get Rooney for a packet of Pork Scratchings and a a Toblerone

Logically this is a very probable development. Having looked at Carter in case he was a better option and not having gone on to make an offer, it makes sense to go in for Antonio. He's said to have had a good pre-season, Reading have other wingers as first choices, and he could slip back into the Saints team with players he already knows. For Antono, a 2 or 3 year contract here must be more attractive than his 12 months extention to stay on the fringe at Reading. If the bid is £500k that suggests NC will wave the chequebook if Pardew convinces him the player is right.
