Anyone Else Very Wary About Saturday

Oh, Tim not you? Please not you?

You are always quite upbeat and less cynical than most, with a level head. if you are a litte bit afeared for the coming game, what chance the rest of us.

I bet i'll find Alpine full of confidence.

I think we'll be fine. Unlike most seasons we already have a team in place and raring to go.

Please try and be a little bit more full of good cheer

And COYS

Thanks SSA - even allowing for a little irony, you make a good point about 'a team in place'...

Can't beat pointless pessimism. Yes we could be better if we had signed Antonio, Waigo, Danns, Owen, Benjani, Adu, Frimpong and Skacel, but we've still got the same excellent team we had last season, appart from MA and PW. We've added three excellent signings and I'm sure a couple more will follow. Possibly even before Saturday.

We have Lambert, Barnard and Connolly, yet people on here are sh*tting themselves over Bradley Wright-Phallover.

I can't fookin' wait tbh!!!!

However, I am trying to remain as upbeat as possible about the game on Saturday but Plymouth are going to be a stern test for us, so let's get a big hurdle out of the way early. I'm thinking 1-1 but am happy to say "Well shut my mouth" when we turn them over 3-1. Carry on with score-lines like last season.

I'm dreading Saturday, not the match itself. I'm resigned to us losing - first match of the season? Live on Sky? Of course we going to lose. That I can live with. What's going to drive me to the pit of despair is all the doom mongers on here afterwards.

TBF that'll happen even if we only get a draw, even if it's a really unlucky draw and were it not for a dodgy decision, won the game. Actually, the doom merchants will probably still go on even if we only win 1-0.

Some people are certain that a mediocre pre-season equals a guaranteed poor season, some people are sure we'll destroy every side 5-0.

Realists will see that we've got a good squad (that will no doubt be added to) and we're favourites for a reason. Yes, we'll lose some games, we'll scrape past teams we should be thrashing on paper and most of the time it'll be frustrating watching teams come to St Mary's to "park the bus", but that's football.

Personally, I reckon 1-1 for Saturday.

I expect a strangulated bore draw.

And a thousand posts on the site from 5pm onwards all saying "still 45 games to go...."

We never win our 1st game anyway. Preparing the ignore button for you if we don't win.

Saints will dominate the game and come thru 2-0 winners. Barnard to score them both.

I'm sure there will be a few that will find some bad points if we do win though.

Can't believe the negativity about this forum - especially since we have finally got a wealthy backer and the future hasn't looked so bright for years.... lots of years.

I'm going to really enjoy this season.

4-0 West Ham in '88

1-0 Coventry in '99 our only 1st day wins in my memory.

and we were 2-0 up @ Derby in '00 and messed it up.

Draw on Saturday I reckon, I think it might be very similar to last seasons Millwall opener.

We will defo win next year in '11

As everyone has already pointed out, the following will conspire against us vs Plymouth:

1) We have only won once in the last 15 (approx) years of opening day matches

2) Since relegation in 2005 our Sky TV win % is below 25%

3) Peter Reid will be managing a competitive match for Plymouth for the 1st time

4) Lallana is injured

5) We have only beaten Plymouth once in eight since relegation in 2005

A draw is on the cards and we'll start the title challenge next week :)

Only one opening day win in 21 years. Quite incredible. Let's hope it's 2 in 22 after Saturday!

In my time supporting Saints I can only recall opening day wins as:

1975/6 3-0 v West Brom (we know what happened that season)

1980/1 2-0 v Man City (Keegan's debut)

1986/7 didn't we beat QPR 5-1 ?

1988/9 (?) 4-0 v West Ham

The above games I saw.

199SOMETHING 1-0 away to Coventry.

Have I missed any ?

I reckon on a strangulated draw.

And Alpine on here saying "It's not good enough, and why haven't we seen more signings"

Anyway, I'm quite excited - will I end up for my pre-match anaesthetic at The Platform, or The Junction or The Waterfront...

Maybe I'll see my second win since moving to Italy 4 years ago? That was Exeter last Boxing Day - even better for the 30,800 crowd (which amazes the Italians for 3rd div football).

We never win our opening match (unless there's an Egil in the team)

We're rubbish on TV

It's a marathon not a sprint

We still need time to bed the new players in

It's a more positive start than last season.

We haven't spent enough time working on our tactics and a plan B

Our pre-season has been tainted by internal unrest and bickering and a lack of clear direction and leadership

Hell no, I don't mean the first team on the pitch today, I mean us lot. Our match day thread and build up is a source of major concern, we've had a very difficult close season.

I worry it will take FAR too long for the weather reports, will we be able to find pictures of muffins in time and will Alps be on the ball with the timing of his first moan? All CRITICAl issues, we simply haven't got our sh1t together properly for this, what with the distractions of the Lounge and the Care in The Community level attacks on ex-pats.

Very concerned.

Oh and a draw at SMS will actually be a good result today
