Paul Chuckle Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 Didn't the new West Ham owners find 1000s of unsold shirts ordered in when they took over? Surely its good marketing not making enough as it drums up even more interest and sales. Loos at the Nintendo Wii, they never made enough but they kept on selling as soon as the came in to stock

The Kraken Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 Maybe the club are deciding to hold the shirts back to boost away shirts sales; the constant reference to "6 weeks" seems to suggest staff either don't know when new ones will arrive or are being instructed to give a date well in the future. As I recall the sale of the away shirt was delayed, most likely as sales of the home shirt were going so well. I wouldn't be surprised to see a reverse of that initiative in order to boost away shirt sales.

I reckon the reason the team hasnt played in it yet is because they havent got any to play in..... Not sure if this was answered but I haven't5 been near internet for weeks I went to Mega Store last Friday I bought the GF her first shirt - luckily she fitted into an extra small mens size I asked the guy in the shop what had happened. He said - they did not know the exact numbers BUT they had sold MORE Home shirst in 7 weeks than in the previous TWO years, Somewhere between 12 & 13,000. Umbro themselves were caught out by the totally unprecedented demand and had no fabric in stock. They were working tor esolve the situation as fast as possible, but we both agreed it was fantastic. Their belief was that the take up is as much about the fact that people are now wearing the shirts more often and that because they don't scream @FOOTBALL SHIRT@ more a statement of pride in the club, we are seeing many more of them. I felt great walking up to the game on Saturday and seeing so many around me. So the cretins were the 12/13,000 mean and evil people who decided to go buy the shirts before a few of the not in the country types could get somebody to the ground. I'm smug - I got mine
doggface Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 Shame for those that want the sash that it has sold out. Though I don't know any figures, have been told this shirt has broken all sales records. Clearly the demand is much higher than expected & shows the sponsor free gesture to be an extremely good decision from cortese. The sash is timeless & I will buy another if they get discounted at the end of the season.

Barry the Badger Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 Whilst I do understand the point that the club obviously underestimated demand, I just can't relate to anybody getting so worked up about this. I wanted to buy a shirt but didn't have the money when they were released. Looks like I missed the boat but I knew demand would be high and that they may even sell out, so to an extent I know I only have myself to blame really. Getting upset with the club and calling someone a cretinous baboon over a lack of forsight is pretty funny when you have shown a complete lack of forsight yourself. It was pretty obvious that demand might exceed supply.

The9 Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 (edited) Alps, I don't know if you have read Phil's post but if you do you will understand why the club have been caught out. It is fantastic news and I hope it may put an end to having shirt sponsors on the front. The club has only been "caught out" because their estimates were too low. It seems they didn't have the confidence of their marketing. And to say "the new shirt has sold more in 7 weeks than the last one did in TWO YEARS" is a tad misleading too, the vast majority of shirt sales happen in the first couple of months because it's such a short-life product that people know if they don't get it immediately it's already going out of date. An appropriate comparison is sales in the first 6 weeks - and even then with the rider that this is a unique kit and a was clearly, even as a simple polo-shirt, going to be a very popular design. We probably didn't shift more than a few hundred home shirts between September 2009 and May 2010 with the exception of a few Christmas presents from unknowing parents. The issue is still that the club could an should have anticipated that the shirt would be this popular, for all the reasons I mentioned above and in a previous post (which are including, but not entirely limited to, the lack of sponsor). Equally, if they're getting more of the dull black away kit in at £40 a chuck, they're idiots. Edited 3 August, 2010 by The9

alpine_saint Posted 3 August, 2010 Author Share Posted 3 August, 2010 It is just me that thinks that the Saints should play in red and white stripes then? I would be quite happy for this kit to stick around for a few years (I know it would be a comercial disaster to do so..) It looks sh*t-hot with a decent pair of Bermudas or with jeans - it doesnt look like a beer-bellied football shirt staggering out of sh*t-hole bars in Faliraki, Malia or San Antonio, unlike the stripes. The9 Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 To be honest aside from the decrease in revenue, as someone who's already bought it, the only real problem I can see is a minor reduction in the number of times I can do the "oh no, someone's wearing the same outfit as me" joke in the pub, and that may not be a bad thing. SuperMikey Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 FFS Alpine, give it a rest. - Club has 125 year anniversary. - Club decides to make special 125 year home kit. - Club understand that demand will be very high due to special nature of said kit, but doesn't want to order too many in case they're left with thousands of unsold shirts. - Demand for shirts from fans is indeed very high, and the ORIGINAL stock sells out within 2 months of launch. - Club orders more, and asks for patience from fans who didn't bother getting one when they came out, who are now moaning that they can't get one. - Fast forward 6 weeks, the fans that wanted shirts now have them and everybody is happy. - Alpine still finds something to moan about. Barry the Badger Posted 3 August, 2010 Share Posted 3 August, 2010 So obvious the club didnt order enough. But everything is so much easier with hindsight mate. Yes they should have ordered more, in hindsight, but they have to make a judgement on how many they think they will sell. This is a one off shirt, it was obviously going to sell more than normal years, but predicting how many more than normal would sell must've largely been a stab in the dark. Yes it's a mistake, yes it sucks that they've run out, but calling somebody a cretinous baboon like you somehow would have been able to predict how many shirts would sell, gives me the impression that you have no idea how the real world works. So I will ask you again, how many would you have ordered if your job was to ensure you didn't end up with excess? 20'000? 30'000? 40'000?

I wonder if even if SFC had ordered more any more could have been supplied. It seems from Phil's post earlier that Umbro had no more material in stock. Perhaps they ordered the raw material based on our order, but perhaps also that was all the raw material available at the time, and we said "so how many can you supply"? Who knows. Fact is that however anyone wants to run down the club on this matter, this is a SUCCESS STORY. Of course Alps can answer your question with any number greater than the current sales and be smug in the knowledge that we would have been closer to the necessary target, thats why foresight is a wonderful gift. If only Alps and the other serial moaners had such a gift who knows where we would be now (probably in the ****). Still think the Club missed a trick with the away shirt, it should also have had a sash in my opinion. Like many others I like the kit because it is not so obviously a footy kit, I will be quite happy if we go back to stripes next season but wouldn't be upset if we keep the sash, change to halves, change to quarters, go to hoops (slimming look for us perkers) or whatever, as long as the colours are basically red and white. If we can avoid terrible sponsor logos then that would be fantastic (remember all the complaints about the FlyBe and FP logos and how they were cheap and tacky and peeled off etc). The club in their wisdom realised the importance of getting Alps on their side, recalled all available shirts and are at this moment have hundreds of lilliputian staff creating the perfect fit for Alps ample girth (and I mean waist!!).
