Why were so many of our "best first XI" in the league missing ?

This was the last game before the big kick off, and half of "the best first XI in League 1" ™ were missing.

WHY ?

Crap start to the season and playing catch-up coming up....

*cue the pathetic excuses and digs*

Because they were injured.

Yawn...

There looked to be width to me today. What game were you watching?

He wasn't watching the game he doesn't go to games. he relys on third hand posts and internet reports then lamblasts the team for what he thinks happened.

Pardew has managed to bring in 3 full backs so this idea that you can't sign players is patently ridiculous. He's had 3 months to sign the other 3 players that he says he needs and hasn't done so, or maybe isn't being alowed . If Corteses has been insisting on waiting for loans, maybe there isn't as much money available as fans thoughts because that's a budget reason, not a football reason.

Cuckoo, cuckoo.

I'm confused now mate. Your worried about our poor pre-season but above seems like you've taken on board that its a 46 game season. So are you saying you'll judge the team over the course of the league then rather than now?

Do you think the team is ready for a promotion campaign ?

What would be your excuse if most of the best first 11 in L1 got injured today?...............stop attention seeking, you only post your negative drivell to gain a reaction because you crave the attention. Hysterical tart thats what you are.

Sh*t happens and the only thing you can do is muddle through is a weak defense. the fact is that the only reason current injuries matter is because we were weak in those areas to begin with.I also don't totally buy the idea that our best players are irreplacable and so we would be suffering with or without new additions.

Alpine has a point, we do have aweaker squad than last season at the moment. With the 4 out injured, last season we would have had Papa, Antonio to come in plus one or two others that have been released and not replaced. I can understand resting Spiderman and Ricky if they have slight knocks but the injuries to AL and Puncheon are a huge worry, as Alpine said we have no width without them. We need at least 2 or 3 more players this week and probably 5 by the 31st.

There's the answer to your question in black and white, Alpine: "Morgan has had a kick, Lallana has a troublesome knee which we can't quite clear up, but which we hope will be ok and Lambert has just done his groin slightly."

Guess another pointless thread can be locked.

Who gives a sh*t about the result ?

Go and look at that starting line-up again and asky yourself if that team will get auto promotion.

Go and look at that starting line up again and ask yourself will it be the starting line up next Saturday. The only players likely to be unavailable next Saturday are Lallana and Richardson, it seems like even Adam is not ruled out. 2-1 up against the form team in the second half of last years CCC shows a pretty good performance in my view. We will I am sure have 2 or 3 new players before the window shuts, probably at least one before next weekend.

TO be fair, for the first hour today, when we had the starting 11 on the field we were far far better than Reading, it was only the many substitutions that meant we didnt beat them, I for one would be peferctly happy if the starting 11 today was the starting line up next week, I still think we would be better than Plymouth

Shame you can't make it to games Apline.

Then you might realise things aren't that bad and not everyone is suicidal.

That's the thing, he doesn't know what he is talking about and relys on third hand accounts, Only an idiot that was there today could not agree that without 4 Key players, we were as good as, if not better than Reading.

Yes I do, the team is more than ready whereas the squad is not there yet. There will be ups and downs no doubt but I won't worry about them just yet.

Last season we started off the first game of the season with Paterson and Lancashire as 1st choice striker/defender yet we still ended up with enough points for the playoffs and not far off automatic. The squad needs quality and not quantity, and if it means playing the waiting game to get that quality then so be it. If we get to September 1st and we've made no signings and have less than 10 points on the board, then I'll start worrying. Until then, we've got more than enough in the current first XI to beat Plymouth, MK Dons and Leyton Orient

No, but the impact of the loss of Schneiderlin and Lambert has been clear to anybody with more than one brain cell for MONTHS. To not even attempt to cover them is plain mental.

its clear because they are so f'ing good, mile above anything other teams have in this division and therefore irreplaceable

Alps, you're a top guy and often very perceptive.

So if you were manager and if 3 of your best players had picked up minor knocks in pre-season, would you risk playing them in a meaningless friendly one week before the start of the season?

Come on mate.... its a no-brainer.

If AP had played them and exacerbated their injuries you would've been furious, as would I.

I agree with you completely.

However, the fact this has happened has for me exposed the lack of depth in the squad due to a poor summers work in the transfer market.

Agreed, but you need that depth over an entire season.

There is still ample time to bring in the RIGHT players.

If we get to the end of August without further strengthening then it's panic stations.

Don't forget..... "fools rush in etc etc."

The season hasn't started yet. Hence why we're currently in the pre-season

Do you think the team is ready for a promotion campaign ?

Yes. Definitely. I'm certain we are.

I feel reinforced in that view by the performance of today's starting XI. Even without Lambert, Lallana, Schneiderlin and Puncheon, we looked pretty good ( well, until the 3rd and 4th string came on).

We do still need a central midfielder, a winger and a centre forward. But mainly as cover (not necessarily staring XI players if everyone's fit). If we do buy one or two players who are so good, they walk into the starting line-up, that's great. But not a necessity.

We're ready for a promotion campaign as we are. Right now. That's not the same as being nailed on to win the league though...

Why is everybody reponding to Alpine who is totally unreasonable and has little idea of Football

Seems to be a good performance today with a couple of new signings and our injured players back I think we will do well this season

There are still 46 games to go

Yes, because everything is just suddenly going to "click" over the next 7 days, isnt it ?

And you dare to judge who knows something about football or not...

Newcastle played leyton orient at the same stage last season and lost 6-1. They drew 1 and won 5 of their opening 6 games of the season.

Ok then alps, question.

What in your eyes is an acceptable outcome from the Plymouth game? Would you take a slow-paced, scruffy 1-0 win?

Yes.

Considering the hype, especially from a good many on here, I would be entitled to expect that we win with a bit of panache...

But then I dont believe all the spin on here anyway

Toblerone.

These have been friendly games. next week is when it matters. The team will be comming out the starting blocks on fire . You seem to forget how together the squad is

Its the real games that count. In Saints I belive COYRS and help to shut this negative goon up once and for all.

Perfectly happy for the team to shut me up, and I will come on here and eat humble pie if they do so. Four of the first team carrying injuries is not coming out of the starting blocks on fire, imo.

So what do you base your opinons on? how many times have you seen the team first hand to form this quite passionate view you have that what we have is not enough for automatic promotion? Your comment earlier of 'Mills mmmm' when mentioning fit wide players is based on what? How many times have you seen him play?

A couple of times.

But it is not my opinion that counts. AP was clearly not convinced last season either.

A couple of times for the team or Mllls?

So unconvinced he gave him a start in the JPT final? AP seems to be convinced by him preseason, hence why he he has start most games.

Go and ask the people who attended the game how that starting 11 acquitted themselves against top half championship team reading.

For an hour we acquitted ourselves very well, both Mills and Dickson provided good width in midfield, Butterfield and Harding pushed forward, Barnard was outstanding and Connolly looked sharp !

As soon as the changes were made, Reading came into the game but it is understandable why this was done as there was no point to overstretch people like Jaidi, Fonte. Barnard, Connolly etc..

The result was probably sacrificed, but actually it was a good runout and will hopefully prove to be beneficial in the long run !!
