alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 This was the last game before the big kick off, and half of "the best first XI in League 1" were missing. WHY ? Crap start to the season and playing catch-up coming up.... *cue the pathetic excuses and digs*

alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 According to saints twitter - injured Fine, so our lack of transfer activity will come home to roost next weekend then.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Lambert has a thigh injury, was at the ground but was apparently rested as a precaution Puncheon is still nursing an ankle knock which he got in the last game in switzerland i believe. Lallana has had a knee injury all pre-season and he is the most worrying for me, and has to be a doubt for the season. According to Radio Solent, morgan reported a ''tight calf'' this morning, so wasn't risked just to be safe. Mills was also taken off at half time as he took a kick to the ankle.
negium Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 You are forgetting that this want the last game..... we play Eastleigh Monday night.
SO16_Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Fine, so our lack of transfer activity will come home to roost next weekend then. Time will tell, not a snap call today (and that's not a dig btw)

Looking good, isnt it ? Kiss the season goodbye if Lambert's injury is being understated.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Fine, so our lack of transfer activity will come home to roost next weekend then. Not sure you can plan to lose 4/5 first team players with an injury. You can make all the transfers you want, but missing the 4 key men will noticeably weaken any team in the world.
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Fine, so our lack of transfer activity will come home to roost next weekend then. Take Austin, Douglas, Cuthbert and Prutton out the Swindon side. See how good they look then. Take Rhodes, Clarke, Smithies and Peltier out the Huddersfield side. See how good they look then. Take Morrison, Beevers, Johnson and Hinds out the Wednesday side. Etc etc. It's the same for EVERY club in the league - take four of their best players, and they will look nowhere near their best. Especially against a team in a higher league.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 You don't risk players for friendlies. FACT.
View From The Top Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 You don't risk players for friendlies. FACT. You do in Alpine world. He's still upset we didn't go in for Torres FFS.
SO16_Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 You don't risk players for friendlies. FACT. Just like you don't win friends with salad

Couldnt give a shiny sh*t about Swindon, Huddersfield, Wednesday (it hasnt happened to them btw)
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Couldnt give a shiny sh*t about Swindon, Huddersfield, Wednesday (it hasnt happened to them btw) Why exactly should we be so different? Should we go back to the good old days of having huge squads that can cover any injury crisis? That really served us well.
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Not sure you can plan to lose 4/5 first team players with an injury. You can make all the transfers you want, but missing the 4 key men will noticeably weaken any team in the world. No, but the impact of the loss of Schneiderlin and Lambert has been clear to anybody with more than one brain cell for MONTHS. To not even attempt to cover them is plain mental.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Couldnt give a shiny sh*t about Swindon, Huddersfield, Wednesday (it hasnt happened to them btw) but can you see the point he is making? losing 4 key players out of your team is unlucky, and it will weaken anyone no matter how many transfers you have/or will make. No 2 ways about it.
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Why exactly should we be so different? Should we go back to the good old days of having huge squads that can cover any injury crisis? That really served us well. Nope, still dont get the point you are trying to make.
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 No, but the impact of the loss of Schneiderlin and Lambert has been clear to anybody with more than one brain cell for MONTHS. To not even attempt to cover them is plain mental. There is no-one out there who would come to league one who could replace those two. No-one. Someone might be able to do the same kind of things as them, but at a much, much lower level of quality.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 No, but the impact of the loss of Schneiderlin and Lambert has been clear to anybody with more than one brain cell for MONTHS. To not even attempt to cover them is plain mental. here you go again, it's fair having a point of view - but you are making wild assumptions like you have exclusive access to Pard's and Corteses diary. How do you know there has been no attempt? seriously, how do you know what is going on? you don't, i don't, no one knows - only the people in charge.
SO16_Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 No, but the impact of the loss of Schneiderlin and Lambert has been clear to anybody with more than one brain cell for MONTHS. To not even attempt to cover them is plain mental. Alps, I'm sure we HAVE been trying to get in cover and I'm sure we will shortly. Keep calm and carry on!!
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 but can you see the point he is making? losing 4 key players out of your team is unlucky, and it will weaken anyone no matter how many transfers you have/or will make. No 2 ways about it. There's being weakened because replacement players arent as good, and there's being totally unprepared. With Lallana and Puncheon injured (and have been for a while) we have NO WIDTH.
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Nope, still dont get the point you are trying to make. You think we should have 3 players for each position who can all perform at the same level. It ain't gonna happen. At any club, ever.
Johnny Shearer Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Couldnt give a shiny sh*t about Swindon, Huddersfield, Wednesday (it hasnt happened to them btw) If and when it does, then what? At some point those teams will struggle for exactly the same reason and Saints will hopefully take advantage. Oh and in answer to your OP, they're all being sold off. HTH.
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 There is no-one out there who would come to league one who could replace those two. No-one. Someone might be able to do the same kind of things as them, but at a much, much lower level of quality. Yeah, but we havent even got them in...
Carlos Fandango Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Well despite the lack of our top players we still more than matched a top half Championship side for an hour, until Pardew threw on lots of youngsters. I'm not going to worry just yet but then again I have the benefit of having seen the game myself rather than sitting miles away fretting.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Bloody Hell let's just wait until this time NEXT WEEK shall we before we start writing off the season?!
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 You think we should have 3 players for each position who can all perform at the same level. Nope, that's your interpretation of what I mean. And its completely wrong.
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Yeah, but we havent even got them in... Personally I don't think the injuries were serious, just that we weren't going to risk them for a completely meaningless friendly.
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Bloody Hell let's just wait until this time NEXT WEEK shall we before we start writing off the season?! B*ll*cks, we've being giving it weeks and waiting weeks for the light at the end of the performance tunnel. Why cant some of you accept that this pre-season has being utterly w**k ?
Carlos Fandango Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 There's being weakened because replacement players arent as good, and there's being totally unprepared. With Lallana and Puncheon injured (and have been for a while) we have NO WIDTH. There looked to be width to me today. What game were you watching?
Nexstar Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 This was the last game before the big kick off, and half of "the best first XI in League 1" were missing. WHY ? Crap start to the season and playing catch-up coming up.... *cue the pathetic excuses and digs* Pardew thought it would be a laugh to leave the team unprepared with only a week to go. Lallana and Puncheon have knocks, Morgan was probably given more time to rest having played over the summer and Rickie was surplus to requirements today. Pards probably wants to weigh up our attacking options safe in the knowledge Lambert will bang in 20+ this season.

alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 I agree that the results have been sh*t, however I don't think they make a jot of difference. Who mentioned results ?
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Who mentioned results ? Well i'm not going to discuss training/ongoing transfers as we have no f*cking idea what's actually going on behind the scenes. Seeing as you've started another one of these threads though Alpine, I fully expect a new CM to be unveiled on the website tonight.
Nexstar Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Who mentioned results ? Oh right, I clearly mistook this thread for being about results. The attendances were poor, Pardew out.
Professor Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Pardew has managed to bring in 3 full backs so this idea that you can't sign players is patently ridiculous. He's had 3 months to sign the other 3 players that he says he needs and hasn't done so, or maybe isn't being alowed . If Corteses has been insisting on waiting for loans, maybe there isn't as much money available as fans thoughts because that's a budget reason, not a football reason.
JibMcdo Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Do you lot not get bored of debating the same points over and over? Why cant some of you accept that this pre-season has being utterly w**k ? I'm glad you started a new thread about it all, though. That pleased me. It's not like nobody knew what your feelings would be on the matter.
wheels Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Fine, so our lack of transfer activity will come home to roost next weekend then. Or alternatively, by leaving these players out as a precaution in a meaningless friendly, we will have them fit for when the season starts. FFS, would you rather they were played today and aggravated their injuries??
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Well i'm not going to discuss training/ongoing transfers as we have no f*cking idea what's actually going on behind the scenes. Seeing as you've started another one of these threads though Alpine, I fully expect a new CM to be unveiled on the website tonight. You keep leaning on that well-worn crutch, mate...
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 B*ll*cks, we've being giving it weeks and waiting weeks for the light at the end of the performance tunnel. Why cant some of you accept that this pre-season has being utterly w**k ? Pre-season is ALWAYS ****, ALWAYS meaningless and ALWAYS a fitness building exercise!! For God sake, the proof of Pardew's team will be in the playing of Sheff Wed et al, NOT some ghey friendly against Reading!!!!
Sheff Saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Alpine has never answered the question; would he prefer average league 1 average now or championship quality players in two weeks? Given, all things being equal, only AL remains a doubt for next week. And that is not a hypothetical question. It is the way the window works. League 1 teams need to feed on the scraps of those above. We might get bigger scraps than Brentford, Rochdale et al, but they're still scraps. AP has earned our trust after last seasons transfer activity and results.
Nexstar Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Oh and Apline - Let us know when you make it to a game, then you won't have to rely on the score to judge the performance.
Saint_clark Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 You keep leaning on that well-worn crutch, mate... How ironic. If my crutch is well worn, you must be on your fifth replacement by now.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Oh and Apline - Let us know when you make it to a game, then you won't have to rely on the score to judge the performance. but the people who don't attend the game have a better understanding and perspective of the performance and result.
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Pre-season is ALWAYS ****, ALWAYS meaningless and ALWAYS a fitness building exercise!! For God sake, the proof of Pardew's team will be in the playing of Sheff Wed et al, NOT some ghey friendly against Reading!!!! Why can't YOU accept that?!?! Point completely missed again, I note. Half of our soooopah-doooopah first XI is f**king injured (so mcuh for fitness-building), so the comments about us having the best first XI in the league, expecting auto promotion, and the current squad being enough and not needing new players are complete pie-in-the-sky....
alpine_saint Posted 31 July, 2010 Author Posted 31 July, 2010 Oh and Apline - Let us know when you make it to a game, then you won't have to rely on the score to judge the performance. Who gives a sh*t about the result ? Go and look at that starting line-up again and asky yourself if that team will get auto promotion.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Who gives a sh*t about the result ? Go and look at that starting line-up again and asky yourself if that team will get auto promotion. Go and ask the people who attended the game how that starting 11 acquitted themselves against top half championship team reading.
