this is terrible

not really, it's a bunch of academy players out there now which is why we've conceded a couple more unfortunately.

Be carefull, I think your in danger of over reacting

He's just being a Saints fan from the previous era. It's a difficult habit to drop.

my bro feels a bit ripped off paying £15 to watch a bunch of youth players plus Pulis come on. all for giving youth a chance but its important we have confidence ahead of plymouth game. before subs were made it was even game and saints were well in the game. shame AP made so many changes. typically goes flat once that happens.

You're probably right. As I said, there are many variables as to why we haven't secured his transfer. I'd just like to know exactly why not, because his ability to make the difference, or score when required, was one of the key elements of last season.

I agree with that. But I just got the impression from an early time that Reading were very keen to give him a go in pre-season and make the decision from there. And by all accounts he did well for them when he has played, so the chances of them wanting to let him go must have slimmed an awful lot, they wouldn't get a lot of money for him and he's probably on low wages so it's not really a gamble for them. I've still been hoping that they'd decide he's surplus to requirements but its looking less and less likely, even more so with notching today.

Can't plan for injuries though

Perhaps as all had played some part of the Pre season AP wanted to give them a chance to play at St Mary's in front of a big crowd.

What !!!

But I was reliably informed by forum experts that he's not really very good ? (CEC retires to his smoking room in a state of considerable confusement)

Thats right and he is no way an impact sub. What muppets there are on this forum. Sign him now Alan.

OTT at it's best.

Weaker squad than what finished last season, defence shipping goals, injuries mounting, impact players ( Waigo, Antonio ) not replaced, bench of youth players. Yes things can change but until they do THIS OUTFIT IS NOWHERE NEAR TOP TWO.

Yes, but this was a pre-season friendly. The team that will start the LEAGUE match next week will be considerably stronger, and with players like Lambert etc restored.

Good game, scoreline flattered reading. Saw Antonio speaking to a fan from the bench and his last words were "we'll see what happens" he seemed very appreciative of the fans apparent good feelings towards him today

I doubt if any team will be in the top 2 Huddersfield Colchester and Sheff Wed also lost

Its called a pre-season friendly. It is what happens and why I seldom go (last time I went to preseason I saw Pahars badly injured by Swindon mong), waste of time, pre-season friendlies are for the players not supporters. Sounds like we did well before the majority of changes were made which is good news.

Now, now, CEC, you know full well that the general consensus of opinion on here was that Saints were generally better with Antonio rather than without him, despite Jason Puncheon being about the place. When I say that, I'm not saying Puncheon is worse or better, but that Antonio is a different player, who seems to operate when Puncheon doesn't, and visa-versa.

You still seem to overlook the fact that Puncheon is a Saints Player and Antonio a Reading one

Oh really ?

The long que of esteemed Saintsweb members lining up to tell me that the loss of Michail Antonio wasn't that important as we already had a better player in Jason Puncheon must just have been a 'Bobby Ewing' moment then .

Good to see a weakened team put up one hell of a fight against a top half Championship side. We seemed good until the subs were made; Pulis, Doble etc. Looks promising, especially if Pardew brings in some cover for the Wings and CM.

Here's to a top 4 finish.

I'd start with Puncheon ahead of Antonio everyday of the week, but I'd want Antonio to bring on with 20 mins to go in a game

You also, not for the 1st time, seem to miss the point that we can't buy him if Reading won't sell him!

My season in one word is/was typical and i will stand by that.... we all know it is never going to be easy supporting the saints and our pre season is not out of the ordinary, neither are our inflated expectations at the start of each season.... typical!!

I'm not overlooking anything. Perhaps you should read the entire exchange of views I've been having with other members on the subject, before submitting yours.

I am very sorry I have read your posts but they appear pointless as Antonio is a Reading Player if he was a Saints player then I would agree with you.

Yep just back and would agree with that.

We're top, in the sense of say... we win 1-0, another team wins 2-0, they are first, we are second, but equal on points..?

At 3 we will be top and I'll be doing a screen print!!

I thought Dickson and Butterfield both had a very good game, along with Hammond & Barnard.

Jaidi looked quite awful in my opinion and I think we desperately need a replacement for him.

It's a shame but the highlight of the game was probably either Pulis coming on, or the ball boy falling over the boards by the Kingsland.

So people finally got to see Pulis at St Mary's......did he do much?

Just back from the game:

Only the first 65 minutes really counted as we had 7 youth teamers on by the end.

Our starting 11 dominated Reading for long periods and there was great link-up play between Barnard and Connolly.

Dickson and Barnard had great games.

Pulis was dreadful.

Wotton put in a 'tackle' that will live long in the memory (would be a straight red in a normal game)

Antonio was very sharp and had great support from the saints fans.

I'm looking forward to the season safe in the knowledge we played well without Lallana, Puncheon, Morgan and Richard someone...

The game ended with this as the Saints team...

Davis

Butterfield

Reeves

Tafazoli

Martin

Oxlade-Chamberlain

Pulis

Wotton

Hammond

Dickson

Doble

Only those 3 players bold/underlined will start against Plymouth next weekend.

Anyone that reads anything into the last 30 minutes is an idiot. :)

And neither are you which somewhat ****es on your argument.

Oh I'm unlikely to manage a pro football club for sure , but there again I would never do something quite as dumb as stating I'd "always" select one player over another either . I'd hope I would actually take the time to give each of them a fair chance to show their current level of ability and then evaluate how they were fitting into our style of play . On the QT (hush hush) I might even consider their state of fitness and/or form as well .

But why let minor details such as these interfere with your unique brand blinkered thinking eh ?

Of course..! Sorry. Was a bit slow there. I'm assuming you'll not bother if we get the other two theoretically possible outcomes..?

Oops, did I blaspheme..? :scared:;)

There there, just because someone disagrees with you don't spit your dummy out as per usual.
