to be fair apart from defence the whole team looks weak

Can't believe some people, we have Connolly and Barnard up front, two of the best strikers in this division. We also probably have best GK in this division, I would accept that MF does not look great on paper today, bu the 4 starters are all decent players, perhaps just not all together.

you must admit this is weaker than last year just look at the bench not a single forward

Well me and the Missus are going. Nephew might be going too. Hoping for an entertaining match and one where we will look equal to Reading TBH. However I suspect Rasiak and Antonio will do us - it's the law.

According to Harry Pearson, (journalist & writer of many funny football books), the first immutable law of football is that players always score against their old clubs. The second immutable law of football is that immutable law number one only works against your team; never for it!

It's been a fairly even game so with Reading just taking the lead. Bright start by Saints looking to break forward as much as possible. Very worrying to be minus 4 such influential players though!

Well that'll be 3 more goals for Reading, 1 for Brian Howard, and if they bring their subs on, 1 each for Antonio and Rasiak.

Todays team is weaker than what we ended up with last year, granted, comes of having 4 players injured. Better team than what we had this time last year though, probably better than what we had at Xmas for that matter. In the end its still a preseason friendly. Bench is clearly very weak, but Pulis is there is we get stuck.

This team put out today will not beat Plymouth imho so we have to pray that at least Spiderman and Lambert are back next week. Now very worried about the lack of our squad depth which could derail our promotion bid if not addressed very soon.

Unlike other posters on here I have been worried about the squad strength all summer and am disappointed with our transfer dealings so far this summer.Hopefully these players AP wants will arrive sooner rather than later and certainly by 31st August.

Why am I worried if we make a poor start? Mainly because I think NC won't be patient and AP will be sacked and imo we need stability to win promotion this season

Saints Official Twitter has not changed at all for me, pressed F5 about 12 times and it still says:

Injuries to Lambert, Lallana, Puncheon & Schneiderlin mean they sit out of today's match. Antonio and Rasiak on bench for Reading. #saintsfc

How come Lambert isn't playing?

Should I be worried?

he has a groin injury apparently, no idea if it's serious or if he's rested just as a precaution. Lallana still has a knee injury and must now be rated a real doubt to start the season.

There is one point you make that I most certainly agree with, and that is the timing of transfers. Although I realise the club want to look over the availability of quality players, there is also the need for these players to come in and gel immediately with the rest of the squad. If you are of Rickie Lambert's quality, that takes about 10 minutes. For almost anyone else, it takes a wee bit longer. Plus, I also don't want to go into the new season feeling that we've shot ourselves in the foot by being one or two players shy of nailing the League One title.

The team put out today may not necessarily beat Plymouth, but then AP may not be necessarily be trying to beat Reading, as a first priority, but as one of a list of priorities to follow through to the season opener.

Bar AL they'll all be playing next Saturday.

Yeah i think it will be ok, have a lot of hope so.

And i am not a lack of depth worrier, any team recieving a multitude of injuries would struggle. Shame we couldn't field a full strength squad to see how we match up to a top end NPC club

Thats right. Man U had to play their CM'S at Cb for a period last season. Every club gets them, its how you deal with it.

Didnt Everton play with Cahill upfront on his own for a time last season when they had no strikers?

Hopefully it is merely of case of not taking a chance with players carrying slight knocks for a match which has no real meaning. Would you rather have Rickie, Punch and Morgan playing today or next Saturday?
