Is The Forum Representative Of Saints Fans In General

No way near representative, this forum is a magnet for weirdos and obsessives, and there is a high proportion that go on here because they can't go to games.

For most people going to football is just something to do with their mates on a Saturday, like go out on the p!ss or to the cinema or theatre. It's not something to argue with complete strangers about.

IMO this forum isn't a good representation of a cross section of saints fans.....

A lot of people on here have a more extreme opinion than they would in the real world.

There are a lot of people who are brave behind a computer screen and are more than likely quiet law abiding citizens by day......but there are also a lot of fans in real life who goto games, put on their hardest singing voices and act like a lunatic for 90 minutes then after the final whistle go back to being the 'mild mannered janitor'.

Basically there are a lot of actors on here who have a different opinion than they do away from their pc.

Is The Forum Representative Of Saints Fans In General ?

No! If you take into account the number of posts by certain individuals, I'd say that 50% of the posts are made by 1% of the membership on this forum.

Just an opinion.

I think that you are being too kind to the 1 % here.:lol:;)

A very fair comment.

Speaking on behalf of myself though, I am unfortunately exactly the same in real life and have the same opinions. Anyone that has had the misfortune to meet me will confirm this. :D

No. This forum is representative of the Internet... Weirdo, keyboard warriors who think they know everything about everything.

Most Saints fans I have had the pleasure of meeting or watching a game with are interesting, normal folk.

seeing that I've only ever met about half a dozen Saints fans in real life I don't really know. Although I did hear it mentioned to by the bloke behind me the last time I was in SMS (over a year ago :().

I think this forum may reflect life in general, with the fact that empty vessels make the most noise, just look at some peoples post count.... and in such a short space of time.

In some ways, it is representative - even (especially?) the polls.

I'd say that the balance of opinion on e.g. player of the season, Pardew stay or go, prospects for the coming season, best all time players etc. are about in line with mainstream/casual fan opinion.

But, in other ways, we are totally unrepresentative. Mainly, I'd say, in terms of depth of knowledge/trivia. There are season ticket holders around me in Kingsland who sometimes fail to recognise subs (e.g. "who the hell is Oxlade-Chamberlain?" as he comes on for his home debut....). They certainly wouldn't know e.g. whether wed every had an Italian/half-Italian player, who the last player was who had a Z in his name etc. They will be blissfully unaware that there's a rumour we might sign Tyson etc...

I don't actually think people on here are madder/weirder/more opinionated that the wider fan base. There are plenty of mad, weird, opinionated people at every Saints game. It just posting on here lays it bare.

I would say the readership is likely to be representative, however the people who post the most are not.

We get the same arseholes like StuRomseySaint, alpine saint, the Nicks etc derailing every interesting thread and turning it into a snoozefest but there these charlatans represent less than 1% of the readership of SaintsWeb.

This is the problem, I've been on this board (in one incarnation or another) for probably 10 years & there has always been "personalities" but lately they have really taken the p*ss.

If you have nothing to say....say nothing

perhaps the mods should get the banning stick out, or limit the amount of posts per day for trolls/members who frequently bring threads off topic.

I suggest you do some research pal before spouting off.

In my last 200 ( TWO HUNDRED ) posts, I have only commented on 7 threads on the main board. All have been related to the subject in hand. So not guilty. And from now, NickG and Jamie Dulldays have been put on ignore, they are like a bunch of girls always wanting the last word. If you look through their post history, both of them seem more interested in responding to every post I make, infact I have no doubt they will respond to this one as well.

Anyway, I can officially say I am bored of football politics. MK Dons away tickets being purchased this morning and I am getting moist at the prospect of seeing Saints on the 14th, having a few beers, some dirty Eastern European/African in the Queen Anne ( R.I.P ) and a curry in Brick Lane. COYS innit.

No, it tends to be a forum for the more vocal who want to be noticed and give their mostly left wing or right wing views, which is fine.

I would hope that most of us (the silent majority) just read it and roll their eyes. Sometimes we'll respond to more moderate posts (like this one) but most of the time it isn't worth the effort.

I'm fairly comfortable in saying the Forum is wholly representative of the impatient, knee-jerk, over-critical, hardcore vociferous element of our fans (mostly under 30s).

But that obviously means the Forum is significantly less representative of the quieter, more patient and considered, longer-term support and older "clientelle" of the club - and IIRC when we were in the Premiership we had the oldest fanbase of any club. They're certainly a minority on here.

Out of interest, how did you come to the FACT! that the voiceferous element of this board are under 30's?

It is a self selecting group on here - to be truly representative you would need a random sample of all Saints fans.

The ones that bother to actually reply or vote on polls here are an even smaller, more self-selecting group who have strong enough opinion on the given topic actually make the effort to vote - completely unrepresentative of saints fans a whole.

A lot of opinions are represented on this forum and well over a 1000 people normally vote on polls. I think this forum can be seen as an indicator of saints fans opinion, but hardly a scientific one. The problem is I think the average saints fan on this forum pays a lot more attention to the finer details of everything and so form more extreme opinions. I think that a large majority of the rest of the saints fans in existence really don't know about the kind of stuff we hear about because we search it out. Because of this, they probably don't form such extreme opinions and basically only care about the results on the pitch.

No, of course not. It's not even representative of the vast majority of people who log in to this site, let alone all Saints fans. Saying that, it is a first port of call for info and some threads are very very funny. The Pompey Takeover Thread makes me feel better every day.

It's just a shame that every discussion seems to end up with the same posters arguing again and again and again ad infinitum.
