an Italian as a first teamer?

Some of you will know I live in Italy so just interested.. We've had French, Norwegians etc. etc., but I don't ever recall cheering (or abusing) using my Italian.

Going back a fair old while, but wasn't Fred Kemp half Italian or born in Italy or is this just an Old speckled Hen Flashback moment?

Born in Italy (1946) ..to English parents.

More of a fan's favourite who played right midfield in the late 1960's, but was never better than his rival Hughie Fisher.

Unlikely as it sounds...had disciplinary problems with Ted Bates and was later sold on to Blackpooli n 1970.

- neither country was ever interested to have him play at any international level.

So he went back to his native Italy then? :)

I'm pretty sure he was half Italian. Definitely had the old Italian flair didn't he. I loved the guy. Certainly one of my favourite Saints players.

I think its outright xenophobia bordering on racism that we've not had any Italians playing for Saints.

IF we'd had more Italians playing over the last 30-40 years im sure we would be in the top ten of the Premier League and regularly in the Champions League, would have won a few UEFA cups, the Supercup and possibly the World Club Championships at least once or twice. As it is we are in the third tier of professional soccer in England and all because of not buying Italian professional footballers. Its crazy. Why does'nt Cortese do something about it. Theres lots of players who are Italian that don't play in Italy- most of the Serie A is not Italian and none in Milan ( Gattuso is scottish and Pirlo is a mistaken passport as is ambrosini but none of the Inter players are Italian besides materazzi who is not even human anyway) so all those young and reserves italian players are just hanging around and im sure they jump at the chance of playing in front of 30,000 at SMS than in a field in front of 12 for the Primavera sides...???????????? Someone should do something about it.

As long as Serie A was so strong - true until only recently - why would an itai leave home shores let alone come to England? Historically there are very itais -apart from trophy signings near the end of their career- who have plied their trade in England fullstop.

I remember us having an Italian striker call Dino Cappuchiano (or something) on trial in the mid-90s... never took him on mind.

Haha! I remember that as well, although to be fair there's a million things I ought to remember and don't!

I think we also had some random Finnish guy on trial as well with a name that wasn't a million miles away from Pavlova - and so there were some terrible puns had at the time.

I can't believe we haven't had an Italian play in the first team though...
