alpine_saint Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 Im not a fan and not a RL hater. I could see what he tried ,but he failed miserably in the end.Im delighted to have a new professional outfit running a business. Southampton Football Club in all the years I have been going (since 1968/69 season) has never been anything else than a cosy gentlemens club for the directors, who fed the majority of fans the 'we love you' mentality so we go and spend more. The embracing of fans, is not because they wish to mix with the sweaty masses but as a way of getting more finance in. sorry mate cant agree. No-one buys into a footbally club to make money. After the reverse take-over he got the taste for the power and the fan adulation and got rid of the retirement homes, probably the bit that did make money. I dont even buy into the theory that ML has bought SFC with a view to making a profit. He might make a bit if we reach the PL, but I reckon he simply enjoys the game.

If that's the case (and I have no evidence to dispute it one way or t'other) then why not just buy a Swiss club and make his life a bit easier travel wise? I can't help believe that it's a combination of "boys toys" and the Premier League pot of gold (if we get there before that particular bubble bursts of course....)

Lowes prinmary motivation for taking control of Saints was money / business and he pretty much said as much. ML is different, he can afford to take a punt and as you say if we make it to the Premier League, he might make a bit....... Remember this, Cortese was involved in Football finance, he was offered Saints as an aquisition oppurunity prior to when we went into administration, so it is probaly fair to assume, he was also offered other clubs. He pushed the button when the price and deal was right - and who could argue it wasnt at 12 million for lock stock and barrell? A total investment of 25 million could see Saints back in the Premier league and he has doubled his money on just TV money alone. I am sure ML wants moe than just a return, but thats as i see it.
Gingeletiss Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 I support Saints. I go to as many games as I can. I enjoy the day out. I go home. Sometimes being a football fan can be so simple.....[/quote You forgot about making 11,000ish posts on a Saints forum, discussing board politics daily. Massive point to miss out. I suspect that with 1,100 posts in a month with your 'new' identity, would put you on par with Trousers post count.

The bloke is a f**king billionaire. He might make 10million if he's lucky and we are lucky. Money is leaving the game currently, not pouring into it. If it was just a business venture, I seriously doubt he would have bothered with the aggro for the small return.

VectisSaint Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 Agree with most of this, but I think the protest march was actually quite a big success. A lot of people thought there would be f*ck all there, but it was a huge turnout. As for sitting in the road, well it caused disruption didn't it - and that's the only way to truely make yourself heard in this f*cked up country. Maybe I missed something but I thought the protest march was organised by a nipper on Facebook. Was I wrong and in fact the Saints Mistrust organised it? I know I'm getting old and the memory is not what they say it used to be (can't recall personally).

The SaintsTrust (Illingsworth) more or less boycotted it without using the B word itself.
dune Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 (edited) I do chuckle about the rupert lowe fans on this thread making any sort of comment ! LOL It's unbelieveable how the duck shoot boys (those who need to know will get it) have the audacity to support Cortese over the way Nick Illingsworth has been treated. Zoom back a few years and Keith Legg banned all these ****s for supporting Rupert Lowe, or for having an opinion different to the "saints go wilde" agenda and they cried like babies, and now here they are showing themselves up to be nothing but slithery hypocrites. Welldone George and M1ngey for revealing to us all the sort of chaps you are. Edited 29 July, 2010 by dune

Although that doesn't mean Cortese shouldn't run the club in the most commercially sensible way. Not sure what this has to do with Illingsworth! This thread is mental.

I know that goes against your natural Daily Express instincts, but you are different to most people. Please try to understand.

I know that goes against your natural Daily Express instincts, but you are different to most people. Please try to understand. Get your head out of the sand. He's been trying to contact the club for 4 weeks by perfectly reasonable methods of comunication and he has been ignored. If you had been treated like this i'd say it was bang out of order and Benji has been treated disgustingly. I am different to most people, it makes me unique and not a sheep, and I tell you what I'm proud of being different to the likes of you because I can see what has happened to Nick is wrong.
Kaiser Soze Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 I know Nick personally, he's a decent bloke and doesn't deserve all the crap on here. Get a fu cking grip.

Look, we all know that Cortese doesn't do U turns for anybody except his employer, then he does as he's told. With that in mind Nick needs a dose of realism and stop banging his head against the wall. Just move on, get somebody close to buy his season ticket and go to the matches. It's one thing returning his money it's entirely different stopping him going to matches. One way of finding out whether he is de facto banned is to get a third party to buy a ST for his seat number if it is on general sale for Plymouth. If it is sold provided a one off hasn't just bought it for the Plymouth game, then he isn't banned. If he was banned that seat would surely have been withdrawn until after Aug 6th. Either way he has just over a week to either sort it or get himself a ticket and let the whole business just die a death, because there isn't going to be a revolution.

Smirking_Saint Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 Again, why should anyone blindly defend Cortese? They shouldn't and i dont
alpine_saint Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 So why did he not buy a Swiss opr German Club. There is money in Football if and when SFC get to the Premier League it will be worth more than he will have invested Complete b*ll*cks. Apart from the big 4 or 6 in the PL, no-one is making money. The rest are slowly bankrupting themselves maintaining the status quo. As for why he didnt buy a German or Swiss club, maybe he couldnt pick one up so cheap (none so completely f**ked) or buy it into single person ownership because they have completely different and very stringent rules about club ownership over there. Do you hear about Abramovich-like or Sheik-like people buying German or Swiss clubs at all ?? No, thought not. The Bundesliga in those two countries have only got to look at England in order to decide how not to run their games... Even the biggest monopoly in German sport - Bayern Munich in football - isnt owned by a single individual or very small group of investors.
saintkiptanui Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 When you're worth billions it is easy to make more billions, if he wanted to he could invest in any number of huge profit making business, he's doing it for fun. Nick Illingsworth should try to be a normal supporter, go to games and enjoy it and go home but he's a bit like Stueey, for some reason he feels the club owes him something, politocal football fans are gimps.
NickG Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 worked out percent of ML's worth that he has spent and maybe will need to spend to get us to prem - its similar to you or I invested in top of range homecinema system for saturday night movies, or a sunday afternoon motorbike. I suspect he bought it because he can!

Even the biggest monopoly in German sport - Bayern Munich in football - isnt owned by a single individual or very small group of investors. Yes I realise about German Clubs but I was just suggesting that if he was just looking for a football club for fun why not look for a German or Swiss non top class club to buy but that of course that may not be possible. But my main point is that SFC will be worth more than was paid for it when we reach the Premier League. So that would be the right time to sell if a buyer can be found I agree that apart from the big 4 or 6 in the PL, no-one is making money. The rest are slowly bankrupting themselves maintaining the status quo.but clubs are still worth a lot of money to buy. Buying a Premier League Club for £12m or so and investing a similar amount seems very good business to me. Whether or not this will happen is of course not set in stone but surely it is a possibility for NC to become super wealthy
John B Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 worked out percent of ML's worth that he has spent and maybe will need to spend to get us to prem - its similar to you or I invested in top of range homecinema system for saturday night movies, or a sunday afternoon motorbike. I agree that ML may not be interested in making money out of SFC but that may not be the case with NC its only a thought which maybe wrong

saint_mears Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 I fail to see what exactly this silverspoons party has got to do with a Saints fan being barred from having a season ticket after some 20 years. Its a bit of a PR disaster in my eyes.
St Landrew Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 Mods - lock this pile of tripe please! Agree. Fine to have it as a bit of gossip originally, but nothing of much substance has been added since. Until any further facts emerge, there is little point in going round and round the houses repeating platitudes and conjecture. If we locked this thread we'd pretty much have to lock 90% of all threads on the main board. Most of the stuff that is mentioned on here would be best left unsaid, at least until some facts actually emerged.
LostBoys Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 Please no more - I keep having to read the thread and nothing of substance has been posted for days :vuvu:
captainchris Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 That is totally irrelevent. Nick can be an ar*e and I don't like him much but this is wrong. Agree.......NI has never been on my Christmas card list. Speaks for about a thousand or so fans and claims to be the spokeman for other tens of thousands - well he's never been my spokesman. However this sympton of high handedness by NC is totally wrong and the list of his lack of tollerance to various people and issues is growing week by week. I find the guy arrogant and distateful - like a child who wont share his toys....... Please don't come back with all that he saved our club stuff - that is granted but his attidude stinks!
Jonnyboy Posted 29 July, 2010 Posted 29 July, 2010 only 10,000 views so far! NI is gonna get an ego... Thought Id post as its been over an hour for this thread
hypochondriac Posted 29 July, 2010 Author Posted 29 July, 2010 It really is pathetic some people arguing about Nick. If a saints fan has had their season ticket money returned to them because the people in charge don't agree with them then personally I think that is a disgrace. Of course I cannot be certain that this is the case but in my opinion it seems the likeliest reason. By all means refrain from commenting if you wish until you hear all the facts, but to say you don't care just because it is Nick is very sad and also totally misses the point.

But that's how human beings typically debate stuff and form opinions. It's perfectly reasonable for someone to form different opinions of the same scenario depending on who the subject matter is. For example, if I heard that Michael Winner had been chucked out of a restaurant for complaining my opinion of the situation would be different had it been my mother being thrown out of the restaurant even though the 'scenario' was broadly the same. It's quite often the perceived way someone goes about the same task not the task or scenario itself that shapes observational opinions. It's human nature to form opinions with an element of bias. Doesn't make it right of course but that's how we've evolved as a species. Charles Darwin, April 1874 p.s. Before I get jumped on, none of the above pre-supposes my opinion of the situation raised in the OP. Just purely observational twaddle
