doddisalegend Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I think he means the signing of Keegan in 80. NO-ONE saw that coming....that was the original marquee signing.. We also used to squeeze two or three good seasons out of quality vets - christ we were almost famous for it. Mick Mills? Psycho? Osman? Moore? It's no surprise to me that when we become successful again, that will be the winning mix. Youth & Experience. Lawrie's way of operating - often copied, rarely bettered. Redknapp take note. If it works great sadly in recent times our older experinced pros seem to have been over payed and over hyped.

No it wasn't. Had anyone every heard of that expression before this summer??!!! It is driving me nuts!!!
Shroppie Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I just don't see this as a quality signing. I never rated him when he was in his prime (poor man's Emile Heskey maybe, and that's very poor) and now 4 goals in 24 games says it all. Would far rather see Antonio back. Marquee signing? No way, not good enough.
Andy_Porter Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 FFS!!!! No it wasn't. Had anyone every heard of that expression before this summer??!!! It is driving me nuts!!! If it's really making you that angry maybe you should go do something else for a while
Saints Pedro Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 FFS!!!! No it wasn't. Had anyone every heard of that expression before this summer??!!! It is driving me nuts!!! No it's this year's in phrase vying with 'impact player' [can't last 90mins!] for top cliche
Britttherainking Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 If you really wanted to go down the Marquee signing route then to match the audacity of signing Keegan, Christiano Ronaldo is our man. Wasn't Keegan European footballer of the year just before we signed him or something???
Britttherainking Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Oh, and Vassell - not sure he's quite at that level. haha. He could probably do a good job for us though

NickG Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 this board used to at least wait until a player signed before moaning about him!
itchen Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 this board used to at least wait until a player signed before moaning about him! Now that is patently untrue.
altoniansaints Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 c`mon people get a grip, he`s experienced prem plater, he`s played in europe and he`s played for England! He`s only 30 years old so got a good 2/3 seasons in him yet and he`s available for FREE!!! he would be, not that i honestly think he will be, a GREAT signing for a league 1 club! I just can`t see that he`ll sign L1 when no doubt there will be Champ and poss even lower end Prem clubs offering him a contract.
Tac-tics Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Anyone that thinks Vassell could'nt do a job in League One is a complete mong.
shurlock Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Who knows - give him a decent length contract - 3 years and hypnotise him with the olde pardew pitch that when you look back on your career, what will you remember? the money and winding down your career on the sidelines at a big club as a shadow of your former self and a booboys favourite? or the medals and pride of being part of a winning team that will be remembered in posterity? Tell him that he has one last proper adventure in him and the club with him banging in the goals will be seriously going places - places that nobody can imagine just yet... hey-presto.
St_Tel49 Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 My god i am beginning to despise the expession Marquee player/marquee signing. I think that you should canvas opinion about it

I just can`t see that he`ll sign L1 when no doubt there will be Champ and poss even lower end Prem clubs offering him a contract. The best comment that i read was that we shouldn't sign him because he doesn't have experience of L1, neither does Rooney, so obviously he'd be a shocking signing for a L1 club.
skintsaint Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 looking at the number of carthorse players in this league last year, even Vassell at 50% of his old pace has the stength and skill to do well in this league.
Saint Billy Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Do we really need another injury prone player on our books? Fading ex prem players will not cut it in L1, it is too physically demanding. One stiff tackle and he will be out of the game for months.

One stiff tackle and he will be out of the game for months. The idea that League 1 is more "physically demanding" than the Premiership is just silly.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Jaidi has been awful hasn't he. Oh yes, he's been terrible, and Connolly hasn't even been close to scoring at this level.
Turkish Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Oh yes, he's been terrible, and Connolly hasn't even been close to scoring at this level. Another fading former premier league player who hasn't cut it at L1 level. Vassell will be the same.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Frazer Richardson has also played in the Premier League, why did we sign him?! I'm outraged we are signing former PL players.
Saint_Ash Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Jesus Christ! People need to remember where we are. We're not in the Prem chasing champs league football (yet), we're in League one trying to get promoted to the Championship. A 30 year old player who was in the Prem a year ago isn't past it and would definately be one of the best strikers in this league. I for one would think he would be an excellent signing, wouldn't be surprised if he signed for Blackpool.
Ashby Saint Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Heskey: 7 goals in 62 England appearances. Vassell: 6 goals in 22 England appearances. Nuff said. TBF - I think you should also consider assists.
Nexstar Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 TBF - I think you should also consider assists. 62 England appearances and 11 assists for Heskey, but only 1 in a tournament (South Africa) Couldn't find Vassell's, but Emile's is hardly impressive.

Oh dear. Trying to salvage something - my general point was that goals scored isn't the only indicator to use for a striker.
Saint Billy Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 The idea that League 1 is more "physically demanding" than the Premiership is just silly. Different type of league, less protection from lower class referee's. Dont get me wrong, I use to rate DV, had good speed and use to score some cracking goals, but I also remember him being injured alot, and as he has only managed 4 goals for a Turkish club may I suggest that his best is behind him. With the sort of salary he will want would'nt it be to our benefit to look for a younger player in his mould that would give us better value for money and who perhaps is a bit more hungry. For those that have used Connolly and Jaidi of examples of good ex prem purchases, good though they have been when they have played, injuries guys, injuries.
Saint_clark Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 I can't believe people are using players appearance, goals and assists record at INTERNATIONAL level as a reason NOT to sign them.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 For those that have used Connolly and Jaidi of examples of good ex prem purchases, good though they have been when they have played, injuries guys, injuries. So? Lallana is currently injured and may miss first game of the season, he's 22. Richardson is out for 3 months. Did Barnard not miss a few games through injury last season? It happens.
Turkish Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 I can't believe people are using players appearance, goals and assists record at INTERNATIONAL level as a reason NOT to sign them. I can, this is the same forum which had people claiming saints are better than England and Lambert should be in the world cup squad.
Turkish Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 So? Lallana is currently injured and may miss first game of the season, he's 22. Richardson is out for 3 months. Did Barnard not miss a few games through injury last season? It happens. Torres, Rooney, Gerrard were all out for lengthy periods last season, they cant cut it in L1 either.

Did Barnard not miss a few games through injury last season? It happens. The older you are the longer it takes to get over injuries. Look this is my opinion, if we sign DV and he does the business for us great, but I remember the old days when Lawrie Mac use to bring in these ex stars, and yes there were a few that done the business not least KK, but I also remember watching some of them who were shadows of their past and spent more time injured than on the park.
Saint Billy Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Torres, Rooney, Gerrard were all out for lengthy periods last season, they cant cut it in L1 either. Oh come on, you are talking about players from teams that have more than ample cover if these guys get crocked.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Can't believe people are calling a 30 year old player over-the-hill. If he was 29 you wouldn't hear a peep from people, it's not like he's 34 or 35, he's still got a good 2 or 3 seasons left at least. FWIW I think he'd be a great signing in this league, he's got pace, he's clever and has experience of Premier League campaigns and a World Cup. Can even be used on the wings too. Anyone who has a gripe about signing him on a free is frankly an idiot. How can we have people pooping their pants about the prospect of Huddersfield signing Howard and Carsley (yes, I know he joined Coventry in the end) but then panning Vassell? Madness.

hughieslastminutegoal Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 Will cost too much wages Source? How do we know what he'll want and what we can offer? Is it necessary to put IMO in every post? Everything is only opinion. It seems a fair enough opinion to me. Do you not suspect that he'd want far too much, given that we are told we are being run along proper business lines? And because you don't know, does it preclude someone else posting their opinion?
