Toomer Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 So back to the story line would we like to see Mr Vassell in a Saints shirt playing for us at SMS.
kpturner Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I don't post here much, but why does everything turn into a petty arguement? It's like a group of 14 year olds No it doesn't!
Big Bad Bob Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 So back to the story line would we like to see Mr Vassell in a Saints shirt playing for us at SMS. My initial reaction was very much meh but I have come around to the idea a bit more. If he's lacking the pace he used to have he can play the role for Lambert that Heskey used to play for Owen at 'pool
Big Bad Bob Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I don't post here much, but why does everything turn into a petty arguement? It's like a group of 14 year olds No it doesn't! Does too
kpturner Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 If he's lacking the pace he used to have.... Can't have lost too much....he is only 30 isn't he?
Barry the Badger Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Can't have lost too much....he is only 30 isn't he? I dunno, apparently Wotton used to run the 100m in just over 10s flat!
Big Bad Bob Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Can't have lost too much....he is only 30 isn't he? Yeah but all them kebabs have got to have taken their toll......
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Does too Whatever. Where's my ball, I'm going home.
doddisalegend Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Is he really only 30? seems like he's been around for ever. I don't now how strong the Turkish league is but he hasn't exactly set the world on fire over there has he? I'd rather we went for younger hungrier talent. Big name player past thirty alway come across as looking for one last big pay out at are expense.

suewhistle Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I personally think that people like you make comments like this because you are upset about not being as popular, witty and funny as me. Yes, you are quite funny, but not intentionally.
suewhistle Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Actually just read the article... no substance whatsoever. Taking appropriate quotes from Vassell, added to other ones from AP about signing players: lo and behold 2+2=5.. "Saints are linked"... who by, The Echo??
RedAndWhite91 Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Type in Darius Vassell on Google and click 'News' and it's all over the internet now, from 'linked to' to 'close to finalising a deal'... All these rumours are doing my head in and I won't believe anything until it's on the OS.
MongoNeil Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Type in Darius Vassell on Google and click 'News' and it's all over the internet now, from 'linked to' to 'close to finalising a deal'... All these rumours are doing my head in and I won't believe anything until it's on the OS. I won't believe it until I see it on Wikipedia.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I won't believe it until I see it on Wikipedia. It's been on Wikipedia since this morning, with no capitals or anything!
SaintDonkey Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I'm fairly confident that it won't happen, but it's not beyond the bounds of probablity (certainly more likely than the Benjani rumour) and I'd imagine that it could work out for both parties. Vassell was a decent player a few years back, never prolific but a decent foil to an out and out goal scorer like Rickie. It didn't really work for him at Manchester City after the first season. The situation at Ankaragücü was a bit strained and although it seems he won over some of the fans with his work rate his goal return it seems he was a bit of an Omerod. Now he was something to prove and so do we, it could be a good fit and I wouldn't be disappointed to see him at Saint Marys. Only if we miss out on Raul of course.

All these rumours are doing my head in and I won't believe anything until it's on the OS. That's what happens on the net, a site gets hold of a rumour and it trickles through the news sites. Wouldn't suprise me if this was put in the media as a high-profile curve ball, so we can secure who we really want without the media attention.

Toomer Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Have you forgotten the late '70s early '80s? Remembered and not forgotten, would love some of the players we had back then to be able to pull the shirt on today.
trousers Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 So back to the story line would we like to see Mr Vassell in a Saints shirt playing for us at SMS. All things considered, my reply is "yes". Although I had a similar gut feel when Jason Euell signed for us. I never did work out whether that was a good or bad gut feel...

I never did work out whether that was a good or bad gut feel... Difference is that Vassell actually has some sort of ability, whereas Euell is a poor excuse for a footballer.
fish fingers Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Difference is that Vassell actually has some sort of ability, whereas Euell is a poor excuse for a footballer. Whose back playing in the Premiership.
S-Clarke Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Whose back playing in the Premiership. doubt he'll play though, he didn't feature too much for blackpool last season (maybe a bit at the start) His performances for us were shocking though, he never looked like a footballer during the games i watched.
Saint Garrett Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Whose back playing in the Premiership. I honestly dont think I'd have him in our team. I thought he was that bad...did he ever have a good game for us or even try ?
rooney Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Whose back playing in the Premiership. and Captain too!
fish fingers Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 doubt he'll play though, he didn't feature too much for blackpool last season (maybe a bit at the start) His performances for us were shocking though, he never looked like a footballer during the games i watched. He is captain apparently so that might suggest otherwise
Thedelldays Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 the mule played 23 games last season..10 of which he was subbed or came on..and he got 4 goals so, he started about 1 in 4 games...
Gingeletiss Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Whose back playing in the Premiership. ..and scoring goals pre season:p
bpsaint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 So back to the story line would we like to see Mr Vassell in a Saints shirt playing for us at SMS. If we didn't already have a couple of players already in the mould of little striker to go with the big one I'd love to see him here, but if I'm honest I'd rather we signed as close to a like for like Lambert replacement as possible.
Barry the Badger Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I honestly dont think I'd have him in our team. I thought he was that bad...did he ever have a good game for us or even try ? The season Pearson kept us up we basically changed our entire game plan around him. He played as a kind of left midfield target man and we would just pump the ball to him and look to win stuff off of him. Not sure it was particularly succesful but we stayed up so must've been ok.
TijuanaTim Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Maybe a bit of a stretch, but does anyone see a kinda similarity in the way that Vassel has always maximized his talents ala Keggy?
Matthew Le God Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 doubt he'll play though, he didn't feature too much for blackpool last season (maybe a bit at the start) He is Blackpool's captain. So I'd guess he'll play a bit.
Arizona Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Euell was a complete donkey during his period here. His scoring record must have been close to 1 in 10. He only scored 5 goals in 2 years anyway. You can't say he's not 'that type of striker' either, because he was a useless lump when it came to build up play. I'd take Vassell though. Thought he looked a useful player and wouldn't be surprised if one of the newly promoted Prem sides took him. Can't see him coming here.
Miltonaggro Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 To be fair with Turkish fans there is a fine line and a fast turnover between adulation and detestation! Always liked Vassell, and think that he would be a great ambitious signing for Saints. Was there for Bridgey's England debut in 2002 against Holland and Vassell (making his debut also) totally stole the show, all round display. His game is about pace, but he has also got good balance and a lot of power - Lambert may break the 40 goal barrier alongside him! Go on NC, push that season ticket figure up to 15000...
Nidger Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 But to counter-balance that, he's available on a free transfer. So, if Cortese has set himself an average budget per new player of 'sign-on fee + wages' then someone like Vassell could cost the same as say Dickson, Barnard, Lambert, etc, in net value terms over a two or three year contract. If we bring in Vassell on circa £10K - £15K a week, all it will do is upset the already established players in the team (i.e. Lambert, Lallana, etc) and result in them asking to be put on the same wages as Vassell! This can only be damaging to squad morale and our overall budget. I stick by my point that we should be looking to sign players mainly from the same league as us and the odd 1 or 2 players from the Championship. When we get promoted, we can then start looking to sign Premiership players. If we are looking at Premiership players at the moment, we should be looking to loan some of the younger players from the Premiership sides (i.e. Dean Parrett from Spurs and Gael Kakuta from Chelsea) who won't cost us much (if anything) in wages and will have something to prove to their parent clubs! I would be happier if we signed Tyson over Vassell! Anyway, AP will have the final say on transfer matters!

But to be fair to him he didn't often play as a central striker, more often than not he was in midfield. So to analyze his goal record in a struggling team is harsh.

In most industries, if someone joins the company who is better than the existing employees then it is accepted they will be paid more. Why should footballers be any different. Let's assume for a rash minute that Vassell is twice as good as Lambert. There should be no qualms from Lambert if Vassell is paid twice as much as him. Now spot the deliberate flaw in my argument :-)
Mr_Red Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Anyone else see that Raul is either going to Germany or England?! But seriously. Vassell would be a good addition, so long as we keep a decent wage structure.
Dark Munster Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Without knowing what wages he was on it's hard to say what he'd be looking for. That said, he may have completely had enough of living in a foreign country and be willing to take a significant step down in wages just to return. I'd certainly like to see him sign, but won't be holding out too much expectation for it. Think he's probably a shade below Premier League level now but could easily do a job in the Championship. Yes, but I think that could be also said of half our first team.
SuperMikey Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Suggested Vassell on the HCDAJFU thread and was involved in a rather extended debate on the subject. Personally, i'd love to see him here. He'd certainly add the quality that a marquee player brings to a team, and you can't doubt his experience.
Um Bongo Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 That will be where the Echo got the story from then.
musesaint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Shouldn't we be building a team for the future rather than bringing on board a fading star?
SuperMikey Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Wouldn't put it past them tbh, but the quotes seem to match our situation rather well. While Vassell would be quality, i'd rather get Nathan Tyson, as he's got more experience at this level and still has a lot of pace, whereas Vassell has lost a bit in the past few years.

doddisalegend Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Have you forgotten the late '70s early '80s? I was six in 1980. I remember people like Mark Hughes coming and doing flip all. Does anybody remember Andrei Kanchelskis?
Thedelldays Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I was six in 1980. I remember people like Mark Hughes coming and doing flip all. Does anybody remember Andrei Kanchelskis? so..???
Turkish Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I was six in 1980. I remember people like Mark Hughes coming and doing flip all. Does anybody remember Andrei Kanchelskis? great quote from Strachan about him, when he was moaning at not being picked strachan told him to "be fitter and play better" brilliant!
doddisalegend Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 so..??? So I ****ed up the quote with reply:rolleyes:
Channon's Sideburns Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I think he means the signing of Keegan in 80. NO-ONE saw that coming....that was the original marquee signing.. We also used to squeeze two or three good seasons out of quality vets - christ we were almost famous for it. Mick Mills? Psycho? Osman? Moore? It's no surprise to me that when we become successful again, that will be the winning mix. Youth & Experience. Lawrie's way of operating - often copied, rarely bettered. Redknapp take note.
