shurlock Posted 28 July, 2010 Share Posted 28 July, 2010 Strange line up from Saints, with a lot of reserves/youth level players, with a handful of first teamers in the mix. Some competent performances, but no-one stood out. Carter looked decent and would be ideal as cover for Schneiderlin/Hammond. Still think we're really going to struggle to break teams down this year, especially if Lallana isn't playing and we do lack pace going forward. Ref was a bit rubbish as well. Very good Bacon Buttys though. Find it surprising that first team players havent featured more regularly in games - no doubt a stronger team will line up against Readng and yes there have been injuries but reserves and youth players seem to have seen the most game time this preseason. alpine_saint Posted 28 July, 2010 Share Posted 28 July, 2010 A win now, so does this mean we are now going to come flying out of the traps a week saturday onwards or are we still going to struggle? I still think we will struggle, on what has been served up so far. If he plays his first XI against Reading, we will be in a better position to predct the season start

If he plays his first XI against Reading, we will be in a better position to predct the season start But you appeared to be predicting the season start only a few days ago with your comment 'the flying start will not happen' - or words to that effect, after the draw at Sutton. How can we now not be in a position to predict further into our preseason build up after a win?
a1ex2001 Posted 28 July, 2010 Share Posted 28 July, 2010 OK its been driving me nuts all night , who was it we played against preseason when we had 'mystery trialist' announced Remember that well, it was in the 'when will Skacel sign phase' and Burley put out a young polish left winger on trial who bashed a shot into the cross bar if memory serves and that was the last we heard of him. That was a really interesting summer with signings flying in from left right and centre.

How can we now not be in a position to predict further into our preseason build up after a win? Too be fair we 'are' slow starters. I'm all for a few 1-0 ground out wins - ugly footy if need be. Most of us I'm sure are not putting too much stock in the pre-season results. Bring on the start of the season.

I don't see how they can suddenly just turn it on against Plymouth if they haven't played together in preseason.
Alanh Posted 28 July, 2010 Share Posted 28 July, 2010 I still think we will struggle, on what has been served up so far. If he plays his first XI against Reading, we will be in a better position to predct the season start I'm curious to know what you think would constitute a struggle. How many points from the first six games? Does not winning against Plymouth constitute a poor start on it's own? Is it about performances as well as results? Personally I think 10 points from the first 6 games is the watershed - below that and it's a poor start. Above that and we are approaching league winning form straight away. We need to go unbeaten and to win every game by at least 5 goals, otherwise it will be considered a poor season.

Lets B Avenue Posted 28 July, 2010 Share Posted 28 July, 2010 Last night I went to my 1st pre-season match, since the Espanyol game that opened St Mary's. It was just like watching a glorified training match with absolutely no atmosphere or entertainment. If any of you see me at another, please have me arrested. The fate that should have befallen that long haired tw at in the Barnet shirt and the 4 saints idiots that wouldnt take him on, but were brave enough to call him a "wanquer" when he sat down. Quite pathetic!

Quite pathetic! That was my mate, he didn't call him a ****** tbf. Although the ***** was happy enough to tell me he'd see me take me outside and break my legs. Thought it was quite a decent game, shame there where so few first team players involved.
