Personally I don't think that this result (or any of the previous pre-season friendlies) means much at all, but I do look forward to the reaction of those you thought that we were destined for disaster based on drawing with Sutton and losing twice in Switzerland !!

Back from what was an unsurprisingly low-key game.

Solid performance - we were never really stretched though we didnt threaten much either - cant remember their keeper having a real save to make. Carter got forward well and brings presence but on the whole the match passed him by (saying that we did seem to be hitting the flanks as quickly as possible bypassing the central midfield somewhat). Thought Dickson and Mills had decent games. Our lack of attacking options is clear for all to see- OC and Holder-Spooner aren't composed or powerful enough to be contenders just yet.

Crap we are doomed we can only beat Barnett 1-0

I have a bad feeling for this season

As there was no lambert or llana does that mean they are about to sign for a championship or premiership side!!!!!

Wheres weston when we need them

PS wheres that Smiley icon gone

PPS Im just jokin tryng to get into a negative mode in preparation for tobelerones prediction for the season

PPPS well done to Saints for to nights win

Just back from the game - bit of a mishmash really.

Carter looked a touch off the pace but had a couple of decent runs and worth getting in on loan with a view to buying in January I reckon. Could provide that extra bit in central midfield. Oxlade-Chamberlain was disappointing - didn't use his pace well and shrugged off the bll too easily. Holder-Spooner was the better of the double-barrelled IMO a bit of the Antonio to him. Defense looked solid but we always seem to have a problem with clearing our lines. Barnard looked interested up front but needed someone with him - I guess that was supposed to be O-C. Reeves impressed with his composure when he came on but there's a long queue of left backs ahead of him. Anyone else notice Holmes and the Barnet #2 getting a bit tasty? The ref certainly didn't ;)

Championship Watford and promotion rivals Charlton both lost to Barnet at Underhill in the last week.

Saints beat Barnet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alps, does that mean we will now walk the league???

The season is based on preseason results isn't it?

Noooope. Never said that.

Verdict after Sutton - Could do better.

Verdict after Barnet - Did do better.

An away game on a Tuesday night, on a dodgy pitch, against opposition we expect to beat.

I thought the pitch looked in excellent condition, particularly given its reputation and Barnet's lack of budget.

Difficult to read much into the team performance with a number of reserve and academy players getting a run-out, so I looked at a few individually. Carter looked useful but faded in the last 25 minutes or so, unsurprisingly. Ryan Dickson worries me, on a couple of occasions he gave the ball away cheaply, charged forward in an attempt to win it back and then left a massive gap when he didn't win it back. Aaron Martin again looked composed, and did particularly well tonight as he was the "senior" centre-back of the two. Racine looked a good prospect as well.

Pardew's reaction: http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2103885,00.html

The manager hopes to name an even stronger side against Reading on Saturday for the sole pre season fixture at St. Mary's, where he aims to have everyone at the races.

"We now up the levels," he said after the 1-0 success at Underhill. "We left seven or eight senior players at home and hopefully they'll be involved on Saturday because they need a game.

"I need players in form and Lallana hasn't seen a lot of the game, so we can't say he's in form, Puncheon was good but he's missed these last couple of games so it's about getting everybody up to pace.

Hinting that Lallana may feature on Saturday vs Reading? Edited by trousers

Solid performance from us tonight, nothing spectacular but did enough.

Carter looked decent, looks to have a good left foot and would add some strength to our midfield.

Other positives were Barnard up front and the centre back partnership of Martin and Racine (both looked very strong).

Encouraging reports tonight - it seems that Carter will add something (when he's fit).

Particularly encouraged that our young centre back partnership held up - composed is never a word used when Ollie was around. Decent result given Charlton & Watford have both lost there, a clean sheet to boot & 7-8 regulars to come back into the fray against Reading.

Any news if Bart will sign a new contract?

Carter cost PNE £750,000 when they signed him fron WBA at the beginning of 2007/08. Wouldn't have thought his value has gone up since then, and PNE want to offload him. Millwall were looking at a six-months loan and either Jackett didn't like him or the loan fee was too high. If that leaves Saints as the best option available, around £500-£700K might be enough to get him.

He doesn't seem to have played a lot over the last 3 years but Saints are looking for competition and cover in midfield rather than a replacement, so this looks a good move. Carter seems to have the ability but the PNE fans comments suggest he needs to be motivated. Other than the fee it does now depend on what Pardew and the Saints coaches think of him.

Comfortable win in terms of defence and dominated possession but rarely opened them.

Barnet fans i met with after rated us a lot better that watford and charlton who they beat recently.

I would estimate out of a crowd of about 800-there were around 300 Saints fans, mostly behind the one end which was open and some in the main stand.

"We might not secure them but we'll be pretty close - I'm pretty confident we can start the season with the squad we've got but we do want a couple more additions - maybe three."

Make of that what you want.

Yeah i saw that. Not entirely sure what he is getting at.

Maybe we are looking at some big names and are trying to fight off some stiff competition from lower prem, upper championship level!

I'm slightly concerned and/or paranoid when Pardew uses phrases like "pretty confident" rather than "very confident".

I know if someone asks me at work on a Monday whether I can complete a piece of work by Friday and I'm not confident that it's possible I will say: "I'm pretty confident I can do that, subject to x, y and z". In other words, it's a way of sounding relatively positive on the outside when you're feeling relatively negative on the inside.

Possibly.

I think its more to do with the fact he is dealing with footballers... and money talks!

How confident should he be if we are trying t o sign a player who is also being tracked by prem clubs?

Underpromise over deliver. If he said i am very confident and nothing happened then he'd look like a mug. However, lets not over analyse every word of every interview, FFS.

I would suggest that AP really is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to talking about new squad additions. Clearly there are targets, but he's not got hold of the purse strings and so really its a case of expectation management. He cannot say "we're looking to spend a whole pot of money to get the players we want" - he has to be quite cagey. Let's not get concerned...I fully expect us to get 2-3 players in, but it sounds like we may have to wait a bit longer and perhaps even right up until the season starts, to get the man/men AP wants.

Strange line up from Saints, with a lot of reserves/youth level players, with a handful of first teamers in the mix. Some competent performances, but no-one stood out. Carter looked decent and would be ideal as cover for Schneiderlin/Hammond. Still think we're really going to struggle to break teams down this year, especially if Lallana isn't playing and we do lack pace going forward.

Ref was a bit rubbish as well.

Very good Bacon Buttys though.
