Smirking_Saint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 should we be rejoicing in another teams pain, having been there ourselves? Not really jumping up and down, but if it helps us out i am happy enough. We've been through the storm.
SparkySaint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 We had a far reduced wage bill to this season and a terrible squad of players. It was obvious we were not going to get promoted after our previous relegation. We took 1 year to stabilise and got promoted the year after. We are going up!!!!

RedAndWhite91 Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I agree with s_s, I wouldn't want any other club to go through what we went through, apart from the skates, who I hope get it 100x worse. And maybe Man Utd and Chelsea. And Leeds. And MK Dons perhaps. But yeah, I agree.

tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 They did, but they're wrong. A creditor can petition a Court. Only a Court can issue the order. Correct.
Thedelldays Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I wonder if they still prefer their forwards once we get tyson
tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=463&fid=221&act=1&mid=2120875407 If this is true and Sheffield Weds are considering signing him then they must be in dire straights! Hahaha good one.
tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Oh dear... the arrogance of newly relegated teams who seem to think they'll bounce straight back.. We've signed good League One players as opposed to the sort of below average Championship players that got you relegated in the first plac. Morrison and Mellor are hardly what I call big names in the Championship let alone here... It's confidence not arrogance and we have every right to be confident.
tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Looks like Grant is off to rejoin Brian Laws at Burnley for £1m, that's the tax bill paid then. Do they have a decent #2 keeper? Two academy lads. One rumour is we're signing Nicky Weaver on a free once the tax bill is paid. He's a local lad and a Wednesday fan. Nowhere near as good as Grant but good enough for this league too.

tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I wonder if they still prefer their forwards once we get tyson I definitely will. Tyson scored 2 goals in 39 appearances last season. We were linked with him the last time we were in this division before he signed for Forest. I'm really not a fan. IMO you will be far better off with what you already have.
S-Clarke Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 I definitely will. Tyson scored 2 goals in 39 appearances last season. We were linked with him the last time we were in this division before he signed for Forest. I'm really not a fan. IMO you will be far better off with what you already have. Tyson (possible), Lambert, Barnard, Connolly, Lallana, Puncheon compared with - Mellor, Tudguy, Heffernen, Morrison, Teale, Johnson tbf i think they're both very evenly matched attacking options. I still believe we have the slight edge because most of our lads have had a full season playing together.
Smirking_Saint Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 It's confidence not arrogance and we have every right to be confident. Even without Grant ??
S-Clarke Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 It's confidence not arrogance and we have every right to be confident. you have a good first team, suprised you've managed to keep hold of Tudgay, Beevers, Potter etc - all v good players in the championship, so they will be very good at this level. What sort of depth do you have though if those players are injured?
tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 Even without Grant ?? Absolutely. We still have a very strong squad. It's a shame to lose Grant but there are plenty of goalkeepers about looking for a deal. They won't be the same quality but unfortunately our financial position dictates the sale.

Genk Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 you have a good first team, suprised you've managed to keep hold of Tudgay, Beevers, Potter etc - all v good players in the championship, so they will be very good at this level. What sort of depth do you have though if those players are injured? Totally agree. Due to the fact that they have those players, I believe they will win this league. Managing to keep ahold of Tudgay is fantastic for them, he could get a game in a mid/lower Premiership side in my opinion.
tartanowl Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 you have a good first team, suprised you've managed to keep hold of Tudgay, Beevers, Potter etc - all v good players in the championship, so they will be very good at this level. What sort of depth do you have though if those players are injured? Grant hasn't actually left yet. He will leave though. West Brom and Bristol City are now joining the race apparently. The move to Burnley is not yet set in stone. That should hopefully drive his price up further. Our squad is pretty well balanced. Some players can fill in at other positions if required. GK - New signing + O'Donnell + Jameson from academy. Full Backs - Tommy Spurr, Daniel Jones, Jon Otsemobor, Lewis Buxton. Centre Backs - Darren Purse, Mark Beevers, Richard Hinds (Spurr and Buxton can fill in at centre back if required). Midfielders - Tommy Miller, Darren Potter, Giles Coke, James O'Connor, Liam Palmer, Luke Boden. Wingers - Gary Teale, Chris Sedgewick, Jermaine Johnson, Marcus Tudgay. Strikers - Neil Mellor, Clinton Morrison, Paul Heffernan, Nathan Modest.
NickG Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 think you look weak upfront - miles behind us in scoring ability
NickG Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 infact first time I have looked at that squad - thought it would be a lot stronger
Saint_clark Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 think you look weak upfront - miles behind us in scoring ability Agreed. I don't know why some Wednesday fans seem to think that, for example, Mellors 10 goals in the CCC amount to 25+ goals in League One.
Badger Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 A couple of observations : Our squad is pretty well balanced. Some players can fill in at other positions if required. GK - New signing + O'Donnell + Jameson from academy. Full Backs - Tommy Spurr, Daniel Jones, Jon Otsemoboryes, well enough said, Lewis Buxton. Centre Backs - Darren Purse [good player], Mark Beevers [highly rated a couple of years ago], Richard Hinds (Spurr and Buxton can fill in at centre back if required). Midfielders - Tommy Miller, Darren Potter[ ? wasn't he meant to be the next Gerrard ?], Giles Coke, James O'Connor[ wasn't he at Bournemouth ?], Liam Palmer, Luke Boden. Wingers - Gary Teale [ think he caused us a few problems when at Derby], Chris Sedgewick, Jermaine Johnson, Marcus Tudgay. Strikers - Neil Mellor, Clinton Morrison, Paul Heffernan, Nathan Modest [stage name surely ?].
NickG Posted 26 July, 2010 Posted 26 July, 2010 "Mellor being a favourite amongst sections of the deepdale crowd indifferent form led to him losing his place to new signing Jon Parkin"??!! I wouldn't be posting that squad on a rivals fans site if I knew they had Lambert, Lallana, Connolly and Barbard! Sure they will be strong competition but think this season is about whether we perform - if we do we should walk promotion and Sheff W will be far behind, unfortunately being football (and saints!) that's a big if!
tartanowl Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 That is Lee Grant officially a Burnley player now. Bristol City bid at the last minute and that was rejected. Presumably lower than Burnley's offer. Sad news but inevitable after the financial announcement. It will be interesting to see who we get in to replace him. Angekren, Nash and Weaver are the names being mentioned.
tartanowl Posted 27 July, 2010 Posted 27 July, 2010 A couple of observations : Otsemobor is the signing most fans are least happy about. I'm willing to give him a chance to see how he does. Everyone knows Darren Purse already. Premiership experience, a real leader and battler, and will no doubt be a huge asset in this league. Beevers is the perfect partner for him. Young, athletic and like you say highly rated. He's constantly improving and benefitting playing alongside Purse. Potter bizarrely was arguably our worst player last season. He has great ability (more than everyone bar JJ) but seems to suffer seriously from confidence issues. He will have to start well or he won't play with Miller and Palmer vying for his place. O'Connor and Coke will fight it out for the defensive midfield role. O'Connor was at Stoke, West Brom and Burnley before us. Nathan Modest is a young laddie with frightening pace. He's probably even quicker than JJ, very raw, but one for the future.
Matthew Le God Posted 30 July, 2010 Posted 30 July, 2010 Things getting desperate? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_wed/8873036.stm
SaintBobby Posted 30 July, 2010 Posted 30 July, 2010 I hope Wednesday go up (as runners up to us). Always had a soft spot for them and - along with Saints - they definitely don't naturally belong in L1. They are taking a huge financial risk from what I can gather, but that's their business. If they get back up to the CCC, it may pay off. If not, they know the sort of sh!t they are in. Their team is clearly the biggest, most obvious threat to Saints. I think we just edge it, and have the stability/ability to build further (both now and in January). But Wednesday have a few players I'd love at St Marys (Purse, Mellor, Tudgay especially) and their starting XI is very good.
SaintBobby Posted 30 July, 2010 Posted 30 July, 2010 Things getting desperate? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_wed/8873036.stm Actually, having just read this, they are a bit more f*cked than I thought.
S-Clarke Posted 30 July, 2010 Posted 30 July, 2010 They do sound in a bit of dodgy ground tbf, not sure what their GK situation is like since Grant has gone either...and grant went for under £1m. I still reckon we could tempt them with an offer for someone like Jermaine Johnson or Tudgay imo...
Johnny Shearer Posted 31 July, 2010 Posted 31 July, 2010 Grant hasn't actually left yet. He will leave though. West Brom and Bristol City are now joining the race apparently. The move to Burnley is not yet set in stone. That should hopefully drive his price up further. Our squad is pretty well balanced. Some players can fill in at other positions if required. tartanowl Posted 2 August, 2010 Posted 2 August, 2010 Are Forest now interested in Johnson? Sorry for late reply I've been in London this weekend with the missus and little one. They bid £350k about a week ago and it was rejected. They haven't made another bid. Some clubs (Blackpool and Forest) have thought they can take the **** with rubbish offers. Blackpool made a ridiculous offer for Tudgay too. We're not desperate to sell now that the HMRC money has been raised. However, if we are not promoted come the end of the season that will change.
tartanowl Posted 2 August, 2010 Posted 2 August, 2010 They do sound in a bit of dodgy ground tbf, not sure what their GK situation is like since Grant has gone either...and grant went for under £1m. I still reckon we could tempt them with an offer for someone like Jermaine Johnson or Tudgay imo... Not true. Bristol City bid £1m for Grant and that was rejected. The figure was undisclosed but it was more than £1m.
NickG Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 Of course we will still be a threat. We have arguably the strongest squad in the division. That is why the club signed the players early. They knew it was coming. It is a petition NOT a winding up order. It would be far more serious if it was a winding up order. We have cashflow problems like many businesses. We are in no immediate danger of administration or a 10 point deduction. Our bank has agreed to extend our overdraft facility to make up for the loss in Championship revenue so short term we should be ok. Long term it is uncertain and it will be even more so if we fail to get promoted this season. I will admit we are definitely playing a dangerous game by not paying the taxman on time. If the matchday revenue for the first game won't cover the costs we have 2 options: Sell Lee Grant, pay off the tax bill, tread water for a year, hope we get promoted at the first time of asking. Accept the £5m investment offer on the table from the American group Club 9 Sports and carry on as we are albeit with an additional £400k per annum 'managment fee'. what's happened? strongest squad in league 10 points off play offs and in relegation battle?
Nexstar Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 I LOVE how their fans gave it the big one before the season, and then they won something like their first 6 games, before nosediving to 16th and 5 points off the drop. I'm sure they'll do a Leicester, walk the league, with such a strong squad and all.
SaintNeil90 Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 I have loved every minute of their nose dive. Being at University in Sheffield I have a number of friends who support Wednesday, many of whom believed this league would be easy and they would win it. I tried to bring them down a notch by telling them it is a much harder league than it looks, having already experienced one season in the league ourselves. Their reply was that it wasn't any harder than the last time they were promoted from it. Its brilliant to see so many of those arrogant faces now so depressed. Fortunately for me, I didn't once gloat about being labelled 'favourites', so they have no come back from all the abuse they are currently receiving.
hutch Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 I must admit they were one of my picks for promotion at the start of the season, along with us & Charlton. 1 out of 3 will have to do
trousers Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 what's happened? strongest squad in league 10 points off play offs and in relegation battle? scott_saints Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 Looking at them makes me feel like we're achieving
farawaysaint Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 Looking at them makes me feel like we're achieving I'm obviously a glutton for punishment, when it looked like we were going to go pop with no desire to support Pompey or Bournemouth I figured if the day we dreaded ever did come I'd start following the owls Thanks Marcus, I'm not sure I could have dealt with that
sydney_saint Posted 16 February, 2011 Posted 16 February, 2011 Scrolling through and whilst not surprising, no one mentioned AOC as standout players from our squad. Just goes to show how quickly he has been thrust into the public eye and how well he has dealt with it.
