Matthew Le God Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 (edited) Just as some of your players wouldn't make it into ours. A team of the combined squads would be heavily weighted towards Saints. Weds have money problems and been signing free transfers. (I'm not saying they are bad players for League One btw they clearly aren't and Wednesday should get a top 3 finish) Saints for the last 12 months have been signing players for large amounts of cash. If Saints wanted any of the players Weds signed this summer they would have out bid them. Yes, spending cash doesn't guarantee success, but it helps to get it. Edited 23 July, 2010 by Matthew Le God

Smirking_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Davis/Grant Richardson Fonte Beevers/Jaidi Dickson/harding Tudgay Schniederlin Hammond/Miller Lallana Lambert Morrison That would be my team made up of the two teams, i see those in bold as pretty much of the same level as their competition however have included them over the others purely on age. But that would be how i would line them up, i think Morrison would be a decent player at this level if he plays well, Tudgay is quality TBF but he did well to oust a high in assists puncheon.
Saint Charlie Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 How many of their players would be wanted by a Prem team? Grant at an absolute push. We could easily sell Lallana and Schneiderlin to the Prem! I like Tudgay but the other strikers are all journeymen, including Morrison. Heffernan and Mellor are dull, average L1 players.
Dazza82 Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 How is it any different? Ok, we were nearly relegated the first season, but we survived. After getting used to the league, stabilising and almost completely changing the squad we won promotion by the playoffs the following season. We had a far weaker squad and lower wage bill then than we do now. The league is not going to be easy this season (I know this) but we are a far better team and squad than the one that was promoted from here last time. The league is better than the last time you were here. Imo the top two places will be between us, Huddersfield and you. As other people have said you have got the losing mentallity within your squad so it all depends how your season starts and how this HMRC thing effects your team for how well you will really do.

Swap your left back for Tommy Spurr and I'd just about agree.
Smirking_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Swap your left back for Tommy Spurr and I'd just about agree. Hmm, i don't know, i would much prefer a flying attacking left back, Spurr is solid but will not add as much going forward, harding was Immense last year as well but big things are expected from Dickson this year. I concede though i have not seen his quality yet and so i will swap it for a straight fight between Harding and Spurr, Harding is solid however, and good going forward.

I totally disagree with heavily weighted. You may have paid money for some of your signings but they're not overly impressive in fairness. You've signed League 1 players this pre-season. Your previous signings were far more impressive and if you had carried on in the same vein I would happily admit you had a better team. Personally at present I don't think there is much in it at all.

Thedelldays Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Since when has Mellor been an average League 1 player? since he was a less than average championship player....
skintsaint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Sheff Weds are plop. Their manager is plop as my PNE mate tells me. Think they will be lucky for top 6 imo.
Smirking_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Since when has Mellor been an average League 1 player? I don't think he is much all that TBF, never really cut it at Liverpool and never set the world alight at Preston, he will probably be a good player at this level however, but nothing i would write home about, i am confident Lambert and Barnard with connolly on the bench is a better threat than Mellor and Morrison (who may or may not find form). As for Heffernan i have never heard of him, unless he is related to Doug from Queens. I quickly looked him up and he is a somewhat uninspiring signing.

Dickson who as wanted by championship teams and comes highly rated ? Or Fonte ? I don't even need to comment on his pure class.

Spurr had the second highest number of assists in our team last season, he is very comfortable on the ball, and he has a knack of scoring long range shots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isud_bB1yK0
Saint Charlie Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Tudgay will probably be sold before the end of the window, and maybe Grant too.

tartanowl Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 since he was a less than average championship player.... 30 goals in 63 Championship starts isn't a bad return. He has a record of roughly a goal every 3 games including sub appearances at Championship level.

jwakley75 Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 HMRC are owed £550k of PAYE... SWFC have just been issued a winding up order! http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11719_6275574,00.html

tartanowl Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Looks better than i thought TBF, that said, harding is fantastic at this level. He's a very good player. I know you rate Harding a lot as well. Lambert, Schneiderlin, Lallana and Fonte are the top players in your team. I'd have them in an instant. Not the case with any of the others. Some are weaker, some are about the same. That's my opinion.
Smirking_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Puncheon, Dickson and Barnard are no better than players we have. Dickson is unknown in my eyes ATM but comes highly rated, so i will just have to wait and see. I would have Puncheon over your wide men excluding Tudgay, he was 2nd highest assisting at the club last season after half a season and can turn a game at times. Barnard is a hard working little b*stard and has a good eye for goal, he scored 20+ last season with many coming from a club that created very little. I would rather Barnard than any of your strikers excluding and on form Morrison.

Fair point, i would concede that, Puncheon may sting you next season mind, he does f*ck all and then pops up from nowhere, Jaidi is a monster at the back, Davis is one of the best shot stoppers i have seen in the last 3 years easily, but that first season he was with us was embarassing. Dickson may end up being a real star, Hammond works f*cking hard but i don't think technically he is all that, breaks the play up well though. Wotton..........well........ he is a footballing god.
tartanowl Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Looks better than i thought TBF, that said, harding is fantastic at this level. I don't know how I forgot this one either. Cracking finish from Tudgay in this vid too.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I don't know how I forgot this one either. Cracking finish from Tudgay in this vid too. I was at this game...Wednesday looked decent this day, although Utd were appalling. Back on topic, I would only have maybe Grant, Spurr, Beevers, Miller and Tudgay...but not sure whether they'd be starters.
patred44 Posted 23 July, 2010 Author Posted 23 July, 2010 Puncheon, Dickson and Barnard are no better than players we have. deluded, say no more

Presumably the part in bold has something to do with your current precarious financial position. You say that the club kept very quiet about it, which is to be expected. They kept quiet about it because there are all sorts of ripples that are caused by this information being in the public domain. Existing creditors get nervous and press for early settllement of debts. New creditors want payments to be pro-forma. This makes cash flow more difficult. But it also sends out a message to players and agents that this is a club in a precarious position and some of those players might decide to go elsewhere to more stable clubs. As has already been pointed out, a club that has to sell players to balance the books is in a weak bargaining position. Players demoralised by the relegation have another worry on their minds. As you're well aware, we've been there and done that ourselves, so you have my sympathy, but whereas we cut our cloth according to our means and sold off all the quality players and played the kids under a management duo costing less than the reasonably inexpensive manager that preceded them, you admit yourself that you brought in several quality players presumably costing more money, in anticipation of the straightened financial circumstances you knew would follow. I bear no malice towards Sheffield Wednesday and you seem a decent and civil fella; but if it were us in this predicament, I would be wary of some misfortune happening some time into the season that will derail your promotion efforts.

tartanowl Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 deluded, say no more I'm clearly not but thanks for your concern.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 It was a great day and we should have won by more. Why were you there? Visiting Sheffield? I go to Hallam University in Sheffield, and a friend offered me a free ticket. I've been to both Hillsborough and Brammall Lane a few times, and always been very disappointed with the atmosphere, Brammall Lane especially. Always very very quiet, and I heard good things about the atmosphere in both those grounds before I went there. I've been there supporting Forest on a few occasions because I have a friend who supports them and also Middlesborough. Sheff Weds are a decent side though, and will definitely be up there and I think our main rival this season. Although both Sheffield teams play very poor long ball football.

Believe it or not even with the players we have signed we have knocked off £1.5 million from the wage bill with the players we have released. That and IMO we have a far stronger squad than last season. I think that perhaps shows how much players like Francis Jeffers were on. The Co-op Bank have supported us well and have a lot to lose if we go into admin. I don't think it will happen anytime soon. Certainly at least not in the short term. Long term, if we fail to get promoted this season then it may well be a possibility after that.
St.Thomas7 Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Anyone starting to think HMRC maybe run by Saints fans?
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Anyone starting to think HMRC maybe run by Saints fans? The Chief Case officer for HMRC vs Portsmouth City FC is indeed a Saints season ticket holder. This is 100% true story.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 We have a better squad than Wednesday. Wednesday only won 11 games last year in the Championship, we only lost 9 in League One. Our mentality will be that of a winning one and I suspect our team morale will be much higher than theirs. Wednesday will be a threat, they will win games, but I am confident they won't win against us.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Jason Puncheon is one of the underated players in our side imo. He goes unnoticed and people rarely talk about his ability, but underestimate him at your peril. He can tear a defence apart in an instant.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Of course we will still be a threat. We have arguably the strongest squad in the division. That is why the club signed the players early. They knew it was coming. It is a petition NOT a winding up order. It would be far more serious if it was a winding up order. We have cashflow problems like many businesses. We are in no immediate danger of administration or a 10 point deduction. Our bank has agreed to extend our overdraft facility to make up for the loss in Championship revenue so short term we should be ok. Long term it is uncertain and it will be even more so if we fail to get promoted this season. I will admit we are definitely playing a dangerous game by not paying the taxman on time. If the matchday revenue for the first game won't cover the costs we have 2 options: Sell Lee Grant, pay off the tax bill, tread water for a year, hope we get promoted at the first time of asking. Accept the £5m investment offer on the table from the American group Club 9 Sports and carry on as we are albeit with an additional £400k per annum 'managment fee'. Spoken with true Portsmouth delusion

hutch Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Did I misread or are the BBC not calling it a Winding Up Order? They did, but they're wrong. A creditor can petition a Court. Only a Court can issue the order.
Victor Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Who is the weakest player in our starting XI. Terry Curran. Doesn't score enough goals for an attacking midfielder.
ottery st mary Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Definitely have Mark Beevers and James O'Connor in a Saints shirt...
Dark Munster Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 don't get me wrong we deserved what we got !! Yes, and no. -10 points deserved, yes, but they should have been applied in the relegation season, not in L1 the season after ... thanks to the rosy-cheeked bastard delaying administration by a few days.
Smirking_Saint Posted 24 July, 2010 Posted 24 July, 2010 Yes, and no. -10 points deserved, yes, but they should have been applied in the relegation season, not in L1 the season after ... thanks to the rosy-cheeked bastard delaying administration by a few days. True, but he was involved in the club, we...........as a club deserved it, the same as any club that goes into admin deserves -10, as for Lowe, his ego was too big and he thought he would get away with it.... the tw*t
Dark Munster Posted 24 July, 2010 Posted 24 July, 2010 True, but he was involved in the club, we...........as a club deserved it, the same as any club that goes into admin deserves -10, as for Lowe, his ego was too big and he thought he would get away with it.... the tw*t He was told by Fry early on that he wouldn't be allowed to play any part of the club if it was to go into administration, so I'll go to my grave believing he knew we wouldn't get away with it, and it was his parting "gift" to Crouch, us fans and any new owner.
Dalek2003 Posted 24 July, 2010 Posted 24 July, 2010 It only reminds me how very very lucky we were to get out of our predicament. Marcus saved us from a terrible fate now we must all be united to get SFC back into the Premier League.

oxfordshire_saint Posted 25 July, 2010 Posted 25 July, 2010 Looks like Grant is off to rejoin Brian Laws at Burnley for £1m, that's the tax bill paid then. Do they have a decent #2 keeper?

We've signed good League One players as opposed to the sort of below average Championship players that got you relegated in the first plac. Morrison and Mellor are hardly what I call big names in the Championship let alone here...
