Sutton Utd

I was at Sutton today and it was clear we lack any spark or creativity in midfield without Lallana and Puncheon. We will need cover for those two, Holmes was very poor today and not up to it.

I agree we lacked creativity, but Oxlade Chamberlain looked pretty sparky today and I feel AP will be using him more. But yeah, we need some cover for Lallana and Punch, and DEFINITELY need one or maybe two Centre-Mids, as Dickson clearly didn't look comfortable at CM (no surprise really).

Alpine abuse towards you is mostly justified because you're an irritating coldsore which spreads constant negativity about Southampton on practically every thread. You call yourself a Southampton fan? You don't do much supporting, you just sit on your fat behind at your PC moaning constantly. "FFS NOT GOOD ENOUGH" thats all you ever seem to say. Most of us enjoy supporting Southampton, win lose or draw, for you where is the pleasure in being a Southampton fan if it brings you no enjoyment whatsoever than to annoy others on a forum with your endless whining and drivvle.

some seem to wish for failure. I can't say I understand it. Its meant to be a pleasure or a passion, not wishing for failure.

If you can't be optimistic when starting a season as the biggest favourites in any league when will football or your the team you claim to support excite you??

I can't believe I just wasted 10 minutes looking through your depressing post history to pluck these out, but here you go.

Lallana and Schneiderlin can't cut it and should be replaced. August 2009.

Morgan Schneiderlin, "Strong contender for Most Overrated Player at Saints, currently, imo." and "He's not what we need for League 1, imo." September 2009

"List the players still at SFC with suspect temperament/commitment.

Saga

Lallana

Schneiderlin

Anyone else?"

September 2009

"Can anyone see Cortese putting up with this much longer ? Sorry, I cannot. He's an experienced professional who has given huge support to the manager and players who arent delivering.

I expect to see more changes in personnel over the next couple of months." September 2009.

Anyway, as I said you're much more prone to making negative, controversial statements and sniped against the club that usually can't be proved or disproved one way or the other. Although I did quite enjoy your assertion earlier where you think we'll get off to as bad a start to the season as we did last year.

I stand by everyone of them. Schneiderlin has proved me wrong. I see his value, am happy to concede the point. I am still not convinced by Lallana anyway.

As for Cortese, it is clear that he wants results and is impatient to get them and that AP has reached the end of the excuses. So it still might happen.

And I do reckon we could start this season as bad as last form-wise.

The reason we didn't get promotion lasf season was dow to our lack of pre season, so i was told. Now a 75% strength full pre season saints can't even beat sutton utd pre-season. Worrying.

Dont care if its 'only a friendly ffs'. We should destroy them. End of.

I was wondering how many of those that were at the game today also went to the Swiss games and farnboro

Can anybody give an accurate assesment on how much you think the team have improved progressed fitness and skill wise since the intial game just over a week ago.

The team clearly gelled while they were in switzerland that was self evident , May sue whistle and stve grant were at todays game I would like to hear their assessments.

Steve wasn't there. He was in Leeds

Apparently our players are just supposed to suddenly throw a switch in their head at the first whistle at the start of the season and go from playing mediocre sh*t, to devastating league-winning form.

Bizarre.

Ok if you played for SFC would you be throwing yourself around like an idiot at the risk of injury before the season started OR would you wait?

No-one did. I was trying to be hysterical and impulsive over a friendly result.

If you were an Aston Villa fan tonight what would you be saying about the result?

You are still ignoring post 309 ;)

No I am not, if you want to be prissy and self-important and examine my entire posting history, you will find other examples I am sure.

I never claimed I am always right.

Why bother playing pre-season games then?

To get fit, to get tactics right, to sort out the wheat from the chaff and work ouit where we are weak. I am not a manager but jesus h christ please everyone calm down this means niothing to anyone except AP. Why was it such a non event? Because in the great scheme it does not count for anything other than sorting SFC out before we meet Plymouth. You will have a smile a mile wide when we meet PAFC becasue AP prepared properly - last year we did not.

You asked for examples.

And proven wrong many more times too.

Examples, please.

Were you expecting no-one to find anything?

The post where on Oct 1st 2009 you predicted Saints to come between 16th - 18th shows that you aren't good at forecasting how a season will go. From basically the begining of October when you posted onwards, Saints were on promotion form. Now 10 months later you keep creating more threads predicting doom and gloom like Nostradamus.

The whole idea of pre-season is like dress rehearsals; get everything in place to win your real games, starting from the FIRST.

Your view doesn't seem to be the approach taken by a lot of professional managers...

Just to put today's result in a bit of perspective, all of today's other friendly matches in bold didn't go as league status would suggest.

Aldershot 3-0 Bristol City

Barnet 1-0 Charlton

Barnsley 3-1 Huddersfield

Bohemians 2-1 Aston Villa

Braintree Town 0-0 Colchester

Bristol Rovers 0-1 West Brom

Burton Albion 4-2 West Ham

Chesterfield 4-5 Derby

FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 Liverpool

Hartlepool 0-5 Leeds United

Hayes & Yeading 1-1 QPR

Liaoning 0-2 Birmingham

Lincoln City 1-4 Celtic XI

Macclesfield 2-1 Man City XI

Mansfield 1-1 Tranmere

Marine 2-3 Wigan XI

Nantwich Town 0-5 Crewe

Newcastle Town 0-6 Stoke

Northampton 3-3 Watford

Northwich 0-3 Accrington Stanley

Norwich 2-1 Newcastle

Notts County 2-1 Cardiff

Oxford Utd 1-1 Leicester

Peterborough 1-0 Nottm Forest

Preston 0-3 Everton

Rochdale 1-1 Bolton

Rotherham 0-2 Sheff Utd

Staines Town 0-1 Dag & Red

How many recent English pre-season games have you been to to judge the underlying approach of the clubs?

There are the pessimists (you) and the optimists (me) ....the glass is half full; honest. Have a bit of confidence and anyway it would be no fun supporting SFC if it was not like this now would it?

How many of those tesms played pretty much there strongesg team like we did today?

Here is one example, there are countless others I could use from any club and in any year...

Aston Villa: Brad Friedel, Eric Lichaj, Ciaran Clark, Richard Dunne, Stewart Downing, Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Marc Albrighton, Stliyan Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, Nickey Shorey

Subs: John Carew, Elliott Parish, Barry Bannan, John Hogg, Habib Beye, Carlos, Cuellar, Isaiah Osbourne

That is a very strong Aston Villa side, far better than the Saints team today. Yet Villa still lost to Bohemians.

1) How many friendlies are where both teams are actively playing and competing for 3 points? NONE

2) How many friendlies are players looking to avoid injury and not going fully into challenges? EVERY SINGLE ONE

3) How many League games next season will Saints make 5 subs? NONE

4) How many League games next season will Saints deliberately not be fielding the strongest possible side to achieve best results in the League? NONE

But would they do this in a friendly? YES

Yep!

Result is obvioulsy a bit disappointing today but I just don't care. I'm confident that we will still win a lot of games when the season starts. The key will be to string back-to-back wins together as soon as possible.

Yes definately winning games is the key !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good point!!!!!!

Any particular reason?

Anything less than 30 goals is a disgrace.

TBF I wasn't convinced he had the necesarry discipline to play "wing" in 2008-2009 but it was obvious last year that he had improved his fitness and team ethic. I knew this because I watched some matches.
