Give him chance to recover this season...

.He could make the breakthrough the following season or the one after that...

Or even the one after that.

Debut at 31 ?

This reinforces our massive need for more back up in the centre of midfield, without the maestro Pulis we're worryingly lacking quality in the middle.

Posted
Caught between telling you that this is mean-spirited, and wondering how I can sleep tonight at the sheer devastation this will bring to our season...

Couldn't have put it better myself. LOL

That'l stretch the medical facilities. Two key players with the same injury. God, I hope it isn't the same shoulder..!

Do you think they might have time sharing on a shoulder then ?

Posted

I think we all know this is the clubs way of just putting our minds at ease, that despite everything and in case anyone was in any doubt,we can assure you Anthony Pulis will NOT be available for first team selection for the forseeable future. Now watch ST sales soar.

Awwwww, come on, he's a Saints player. He's one of us. Badger, you should be ashamed.

With you on that.

Come on guys as it was not his fault someone offered him a contract, would you also signed it?

And I blame Ottery, who posted before me,and Alpine who posted before him.

I too apologise unreservedly to Anthony for any offence or embarrasment this may have caused.I shall email Nicola tomorrow suggesting a hike in ticket prices and booking fees to ensure Anthony receives the best medical attention, and rehabilitation that money can buy, probably somewhere exclusive in Switzerland, to ensure his footballing career and prospects in the top flight are not going to be jeopardised because of this unfortunate incident.

Anything left over can be used for his next rehabilitation ....

Fair point in all seriousness, but it is galling that we retain a player we cannot give away...

Is it me or is young Antony rather injury prone when he went on loan last season he had to come back early becuase of injury, I'm sure he was subbed after hurting himself in the Havant game the other day too. I reckon it's ploy if he can stay injuried no one can see him play, If they don't see him play no one will figure out that he might not really be a footballer only 10 more years and he can retire as the greatest player never to have played in a first team.

Can I just ask....are we all utterly certain that Pulis is rubbish?

I am not sure I've ever seen him play.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the joking on here, but are we sure he should be taken to the knackers yard?

Please dont just reply "yes" !

Haven't you answered your own question there? A player who has been in the squad for 2 years that you've never seen play....

Ok, perhaps he isn't "rubbish" but if he had the right level of general talent isn't there a chance that he would have played for the first team in the third tier of English football a little more often?

Granted, the 'evidence' is more circumstantial than tangible but, David, the clues are there as we go throooooough the keyhole...

Well somebody has seen enough in him after those 2 years to still stick him in the starting eleven last night and, as has been mentioned, probably the best player on the park until going off.

I have never seen him play myself.

Ask some imps fans he couldn't even break into their team in league two. They where less than complementry about him after seeing him get a few games in their first team. Chris Sutton didn't coming rushing in for him this summer did he? if he's not good enough for for Lincoln city he sure isn't good enough for us.

I saw him play in a reserves match a few months after he joined us; he was injured when he joined us but was fully fit by then. He wandered around the middle of the pitch while the game just passed him by. He didn't do anything of note during the time he was on the pitch; quite simply, he looked totally lost and way below the standard of the other players - and bear in mind that this was our reserve team, two seasons back. And, as others have pointed out, a glance at his record of appearances for a number of teams (ie hardly any over several years) also gives a good indication of his abilities.

I assume that the reason he's started all the Saints XI friendlies this year was to give him a chance to find a team (most likely non-league) who'll be willing to pay for his services. If he'd been in Pardew's mind for a first team place he'd have been in Switzerland. He's here on a two-year contract which started on the 29th August 2008, so it's up soon (I can't somehow see the club taking up the option of an additional year). So, if he can interest any other side by then he gets to continue his career as a footballer. If not, he'll be released anyway.

Although he was not that good in the thirty minutes he was on the pitch last night he was not that bad either.

Made a couple of decent tackles passed the ball quickly when he got it and harried their players

Seemed to have good attitude as did all the players

Ah well, at 25 years old he is only starting out, so we shouldn't expect too much at this stage of his career. Give the lad a chance, few become an overnight sucess.

I must admit I would not have brought him to St Mary's but he is here and should be given a chance without fans getting on his back.

He does not appear to have much skill but tackles well and passed the ball quickly

Replace with in football. The proof for the tag footballer is somewhat elusive. I'm afraid that someone of his age with any self-respect would have found more suitable employment... unless this is the most suitable, and if so, he should be seriously worrying about the future.

I fundamentally disagree. His career shows pretty conclusively in my opinion that he has lasted this long in the professional game thanks solely to opportunities provided (and/or engineered) by his dad.

I seem to recall Lawrie McMenemy trying to give an opportunity to his son to make it in the game, and his Chris was clearly never going to make it, not an edifying sight.

That kind of nepotism is distasteful.

Good job we're getting a full time doctor. Nice one Nicola!

What cracks me up is that even Sky couldn't find a picture of him for that article!

Forget asking for people's opinions on whether he's any good or not - does anyone actually know what he even looks like???!!!

Quite. I've never seen him play, but clearly no Saints manager, nor any other club's manager, except his Dad, has rated him, so he can't be a wronged superstar can he?

Surely Saints must by now have tried to buy him out of his contract ...eg half your remaining years' wages upfront in a lump sum to go now? Most players not getting a game would take that then hope to get another club straight away, even if at lower wages, because the pay-off would still give them a good deal overall...and they'd get to actually play football. The only reason not to accept and sit at a cluib doing virtually nothing with no sniff of a first team appearance, would be if there was no realistic chance of getting another club, ie if the player really were crap and was only on the original contract for dodgy reasons.

So how many of you have seen him play?

I haven't, but my best mate is a Lincoln Supporter and I trust him when he says he was shyte.

And thats in a cr@p Lincoln team.

Posted

Of course very few of us have seen him play. The most telling statistic however was at the time of his signing, someone posted on here that at the age of 23 or whatever, he had only made about 40 first team appearances,30 of which were for teams managed by his old man.

The negative posts about Ant Pulis are mostly by sheep following a lead. Some people may have seen him play but if negative posts were only made by people who had, there would be a lot less of them. This all goes back to the mob mentality when Pulis came here carrying an injury while Portvliet was in charge. If Saint's coaches didn't think he was worth his wages, his contract would have been cancelled but its also worth remembering that not every player in the reserves will make the first team, some are there to help bring on other players.

Its time to lay off Pulis and to trust the judgement of the club staff for as long as they think he has a role.

I agree. If he was a 1st team player that was earning silly sums then thats different.

Your mate might not be the expert he thinks he is. I was working in Lincoln at the time and he did OK for them and was regularly selected until his injury, but maybe Chris Sutton, manager at Sincil Bank, didn't have the benefit of your mate's superior expertise. Lincoln finished the season low in the L2 table, but they were actually higher when Pulis was playing for them, so maybe not as bad at the time as suggested.

Under what aspect of contract or employment law would that fall then? We can't just cancel a valid legal contract because he's not good enough, unless he agrees voluntarily to have it cancelled after a negotiation for compensation - cf my earlier post about buying him out of his contract.

If he feels he'll never get another club, why would he agree to be bought out for anything less than full wages? And why would we buy him out for that much? Result -- stalemate, which is what we've had with him for 2 years. If he was any good at all, he'd either be playing for us, or for someone else by now.

I'd be delighted to be proved wrong and see him suddenly develop (at 25) into the midfield powerhouse of our dreams.
