wingers / pace up front

i havent caught up with everything over the past few weeks, but are we a bit short of fire power up front?

id heard we'd let papa and antonio go, and it doesnt seem we have replaced them. im a bit concerned. i know we have connoly re-signed, but no guarentee how much he will be fi are we going to be playing a different style this season, or are we expecting some firepower and pace to arrive in the next couple of weeks?

As we were one of the highest scoring teams in L1 last season, I don't think we can say we are SHORT of fire-power, but IMHO what we do need is COVER for the likes of Lambert and Barnard. An on-form and fit Connolly will be a joy to watch..as will Lallana but I do agree we need a pacy forward.

Um not completely wrong, because i went to games last season and saw him do exactly as i posted above.

MK Dons away, 1st leg of the JPT- AWFUL passing and crossing but scored a very good goal.

Norwich home- JPT. Looked like he had rubber boots on.

Wycombe away- Terrible. Just awful.

Off the top of my head.......

tbf, the whole team were that night

Completely wrong, go back and watch some of the highlights from last season, he was outstanding in every area. The thing that stands out for me was the run and cross in the Pompey game for Lallana to head at goal at the start of the second half, only for James to pull off a world class save.

No he wasn't, i didn't like him at first, then began to like him, he has pace, he has strength but he was pretty dire technically, anyone could see that.

He had a good finish on him though !!

At best, he had potential

He is good at this level, especially when coming on late on, no defender likes playing against strength AND pace, so you can sort of let him off the 1 in 4 crosses on target as when he is playing well he gets in the positions more often.

I think he had potential, he did need a lot of work on the technical side of this though, CCC may be a bit tough for him in that respect.

He was probably better than you thought nipper, but no where near the hero worship a few have for him, signing him for anything under 300k would be good, anything more a rip off.

But i hated him until the last quarter of the season.

Butterfield started his career at CM, Chamberlain has played all across the midfield in the youth team but definitely has the pace for a winger (and not really the strength for a CM), and Mills looked fine at LM, don't remember his goal last summer?

Didn't know Butterfield started there, but perhaps he was pants so that's why he moved back to play at fullback? SKP started at fullback, would you want him playing there now if he rejoined? Interesting to know about Chamberlain. You could say the same thing about Mellis, but he was terrible out wide and looked far far better when played down the middle and making surging forward runs. As for Mills, he came on several times at left midfield to try and stifle the oppsition and each time he looked a fish out of water parden the pun. I saw his goal against ajax, so what?

you could pick almost any player (Fonte, Harding and Davis apart) and they will have had 5 or 6 poor games last year. Even Lambert had games when he won **** all and achieved nothing. Besides Antonio played bloody well in other games and everyone knows a winger has good and bad days because hes not trying to keep it simple, he has has to try things, beat a man and do something unusual - much harder than winning headers all day of you are 6'4".

Take Bristol Rovers away in the cup or Leyton Orient away for example. He was absolutely bloody brilliant in both games. Tranmere at home was the only game that made me even think twice about him. I've not enjoyed watching a player at Saints so much for a long long time. I just love how he murders a fullback without having even got the ball under control. He caused so many probklems for teams last year and Pardew should have given him more time on the pitch than he did.

Raw but exactly what the side needs - pace, power, effort going both way, confidence to try and beat players and shoot. He gets to the byeline as well and smacks some decent crosses in. Yes some go into row Z, but the more measured Puncheon does that and certainly not at the pace Antonio is trying to do it. He's not a world beater for sure, I mean he struggles to control a ball at time, but he is certainly worth 6 figures in my book.

Hang on, Didn't Mills play LM for S****horpe when they got to the play off final in League one ?!

no, he played left back in all but one of the 14 games whilst he was there. If you are talking specifically about the final, then still no, as he didn't play

at best he tore Bristol Rovers apart.

I can't see him being allowed to join us. He came on against Farnborough the other night and caused them `all sorts of problems' apparently. I think reading may now know he might be worth keeping and not just so they can get a decent fee.

I don't think he's amazing, technically I think he is pretty poor. But, he is exactly what we need as an option. Pace, power, work rate, inconsistency (this can work in good ways and bad), and unpredictability. I would be very happy if we signed him.

Technically he was miles better at the end of the season than we we first got him. If you look at his cameo performances at the start v Torquay in the JPT etc and then look at his match winning performance v Charlton, it's like watching a different player. He improved massively and everything points to him continuing to improve if he stayed with us.

It's clear to me that he blossomed under our management and they were able to coach and get the best out of him. If we don't get him, i hope he doesn't end up drifting away because he could be a really good championship level winger for someone.

Well the most consistent performers last season were:

- Fonte (1 bad game )

- Lambert (maximum 5 bad games)

- Lallana (same as above)

- Harding (2/3 bad games)

- Antonio (about 3 bad games)

Antonio was just as important as players like Fonte and Lambert.

His and Waigo's goals were allways important ones and they set-up countless goals as well.

Antonio always made an impact whether it was as a sub or in the starting X1 - defences couldn't deal with him.

Waigo's clumsiness won over the fans and many are sad to see him go, he was always in the right place at the right time in front of goal (minus the offsides!).

So if either came back I would be absoloutly delighted.

I think we'll get a few Premiership loanees in.

I think we'll be an attractive proposition for Prem teams, in theory we'll be up near the top and having a few players in a winning team won't be a bad thing for the big teams fringe players.

Plus Pards has got good contacts hasn't he, even at Man Utd. Perhaps not at Arsenal!

I know people are in a hurry but AP so far has had his head firmly screwed on since he's been here. In terms of transfers everyone last season was a success. I'm sure he's sorted a CM and a quickie out, we'll just hear about it in due course.

that works both ways though, Papa might not have wanted to stay here. It's not an agreement that's totally set in stone.

I've been told that Waigo didn't like Pardew and didn't want to stay. Pardew is reported to have said that he intends to bring in competition for Lallana on the left. Together with his previous statements of a box to box midfielder and a physically strong striker as back up for Lambert. Which sounds like at least three more coming in. Butterfield's versatility can't be used because he will have to play right back for the best part of three months until Richardon is fully fit.
