Last season we earnt 83 points.

Last season Leeds went up with 86 points.

After 7 games we still hadn't sorted things out and only earnt 5 points.

Over the next 39 games therefore we earnt 78, exactly 2 points per game - or projecting over 46 games 92 points.

We were weakest at RB - we have signed two very highly rated RBs.

We lacked cover at LB - we have signed a quality LB who can also play LM.

Connolly is fit and signed a new contract.

Ox-C came through at the end of the season as 2nd youngest player for us ever, and has been playing in warm-ups on the wing and is seen as having a role this season.

Butterfield played 40 odd games for a good CCC side last season and can play well RM or CM where we lacked cover.

We have got rid of a lot of poor players and players who were unlikely to play much.

We have lost two wingers who played about 14 odd games max each in league. AP has said he is trying to sign one of them, they would not be first choice anyway but I feel we still need a pacy winger.

Puncheon played CM well for MK before he came here and can offer cover for Schniederlin but would rather a real experienced CM to come in.

We have real strength in goal getting - Lambert, Lallana, Connolly and Barnard.

I feel this squad should be looking at 80 to 90 points for next season, with some strong signings maybe more!

anything less than 138 points and i will be disappointed!

Seriously though, I'd expect this team to get 90+ points and maybe even break the 100 point barrier if everything goes right for us.

I agree

NickG, where is AP quoted as trying to sign one of the pacy wingers we have lost? (I assume you mean Papa and Antonio?!).

Good if he definitely is.

I predict mid-high nineties and champions.

I think we will probably win at home and lose away against Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday, like we did with Leeds last year. There are a lot of teams I'd expect us to beat both home and away, and none that I would expect to beat us at St Mary's. Obviously there will be slip ups along the way, but I think we'll clear 90.

Radio solent interview said he was talking to Reading to try and keep Antonio - end of last season but obviously not happened yet but shows the intent.

If we lose six and draw ten (and win the rest) that would give us 100 points.

I think that is achievable and therefore, with a couple of ****-ups factored in, I would hope for at least 90 points.

I think I will wait and see how we play and if Pardew is able to curb his enthusiasm for the "safe" game. We need to be able to counter teams who go defensive by adventurous play. Midfield must click and we need plenty of movement off the ball including wide play. We also need to be able to play on lesser pitches.

I am very enthusiastic about our season but guarded on automatic promotion

if you wait that's not a prediction!

94 points gained...no problem.

PS If i was up myself I would have predicted at least 114...very conservative prediction for such a great team....

Depends how far we progress in the cups with our lack of depth.

Hopefully we can keep the focus on the league this year and get over the 90 mark which should see us top and at very least 2nd

and people wonder why we are seen as 'up ourselves'!!??

I don't see why in this case; there's a big difference between blind optimism and reasoned confidence. As the OP pointed out, over the last 39 games of last season we were on automatic promotion form. For the last 36 games it was champiionship winning form. We've lost some squad players from last year, we have signed some players, and there is the potential/expectation for more players yet to come. Given the barometer of form that we already have, and the likelihood of strengthening the squad further, I don't see why it's arrogant to suggest that we won't at least repeat the previous form shown over the coming campaign.

Given the compartivie investment we have already seen in the team (and yet to come), I would personally be disappointed with less than 90 points and would suggest that the sum of our parts had under-achieved if this were to happen.

We ought to amass at least 90 points but being us we'll have several hot streaks, a few mishaps (probably against Bournemouth knowing us) and too many away draws against weak teams, so I expect 86 and a nail-biting finish.

I've spoken to Alpine and he says unless we make 20 more signings, we'll finish the season on 4 points and these will come from 0-0 draws at home to Carlisle, Exeter, Walsall and Leyton Orient.

The poor results will come largely because we have no 20-goal-a-season strikers, zero creative midfielders and definitely no ball winning centre-halves.........HTH

When a few of the more optimistic fans go into SMS they'd better duck to avoid the low-flying pigs. Support for your team is one thing but delusion is another.

For once I dont think the fans are delusional just confident we did get 83 points last season and an extra three wins would get us over 90 points

Are you suggesting that this season's team is going to be worse than lasts?

I believe there will be no satisfaction in achieving less than 90-points. I agree a minimum of 2-points per game plus we may drop the odd point away from home - but we should rip teams apart at SMS. If we drop points at home we want shooting - sure everyone ups their game, and puts 10-men behind the ball, but if we want it that badly we should win all our home games!

I'd love to go unbeaten in the League One next season - couldn't care less about Cups - don't we have to play 2-rounds to get to the 3rd? Accept for a big SMS pay day against Pompey in one of the competitioins I don't want to win any of them!

The club management will be focused - you can guarantee Mr. Cortese will have a wall chart of where he thinks we should finish - and I bet it is a straight line from 0-100 points starting on 7th August and finishing on the last day of the season. I bet everytime there is a dip under that line Pardew will be summond to explain the drop blow the line. Automatic promotion this year will be anything above 84-points - anything else is a bonus. I want more silverware so Champions it must be - Cortese wants more success and coming second doesn't count.

others have offered a view, some with their reasoning. Apart from a few tongue in cheek posts none appear delusional to a reason mind - may not happen but thats not the same

Isn't being optimistic during the good times (and pessimistic during the bad) part of the fun of supporting your team. Or will we be held to account for our failed predictions at the end of the season.

Personally I think we will break the double ton, points and goals.

We will both be in the 80s.

After earning 83 points last season with a squad that only properly took shape after the January transfer window, I'd be disappointed if Saints only got in the 80's again in 2010/11.
