As will some of the players you are championing, such as Puncheon and Connolly.

You will moan when I say this that I'm being "season ticket elitist". ;)

But...

What are you basing that on? I have seen far more of Puncheon, Connolly and more importantly them against other League One players than you have in Austria.

Ah yes, the fall-back position...no point in discussing this sensibly any more...

I am not paid to tell AP who to sign, its his job to find the solution to a glaring problem from last season.

It was about 2 or 3 games Alpine, if you win all of your home games (which i agree we won't but hypothetically) thats 66 points, it pretty much means it ain't too much of an issue.

But please pray tell, looking from the outside in, as a technical team that plays the way we do how do we fix it ??

By the way i was pointing to post 81 mate, not that specific one.

Connolly will get injured, Pucheon will be consistently inconsistent.

Its the way Puncheon plays, he always seems to do relatively f*ck all, but will then rifle in a shot or deliver a telling cross or pass, he is a bit of an enigma, don't get me wrong he is not fantastic but at 23 he has a bright future and further gelling from last year and the pre season and he will look more consistant this season IMO.

You dismiss it but that doesn't make it any less relevant.

Someone that basically is an eye-witness to Puncheon's performances is in a better position to evaluate him than someone that relies on 2nd hand reports. Yes, that doesn't make season ticket holders infallible or always correct in their views and always correct but shouldn't be dismissed as easily as you do.

I like to think I have a good eye for a player. I research the club for a game played by many Saints fans and I have relatively few people raising any issues with my view of Saints players. Of course I'm not always right, but going to over 30 games last season puts me in a position to form an opinion of players based on first hand evidence.

If you were a juror in a trial which piece of evidence would you be more likely to believe...that of 12,000 eyewitness over 23 days or that of someone in Austria that read about the crime from reports?

Again I'm not saying season ticket holders views are infallible. But they do hold more weight that that of those with 2nd hand evidence.

think the points are quite clear;

over 85% of the season we averaged 2 points per game - which is 6 points more than Leeds did over the season to gain automatic promotion.

This shows that the team was good enough, once assembled to gain automatic promotion.

Many of those additions were in the Jan window.

We were weakest at RB - we have signed two very highly rated RBs.

We lacked cover at LB - we have signed a quality LB who can also play LM.

Connolly is fit and signed a new contract.

Ox-C came through at the end of the season as 2nd youngest player for us ever, and has been playing in warm-ups on the wing and is seen as having a role this season.

Butterfield played 40 odd games for a good CCC side last season and can play well RM or CM where we lacked cover.

We have got rid of a lot of poor players and players who were unlikely to play much.

We have lost two wingers who played about 14 odd games max each in league. AP has said he is trying to sign one of them,

They would not be first choice anyway.

Puncheon played CM well for MK before he came here.

substance?

We are incapable of going to Northern sh*tholes mid-week mid-winter on rugby pitches and getting results, and nothing in our transfer activity has improved that

We dont know yet if our three defensive additions are that good

A team that had no Plan B to start with has lost most of its attacking options, unless you count an unproven 16 year old, and an MK reject who seems to decide not always to turn up mentally..

We are still dependent upon one creative midfielder, his fitness, his discipline (which hasnt been that good) and his desire to get results

We are assuming that Lamberts run of form is going to last another season

Nothing suggests Connolly is going to be fitter than last season

We have no decent second-choice GK yet

of your points:

1) we were getting enough points for automatic promotion - including those performances you refer to - not perfect but it doesn't need to be. What do you suggest? (sorry demand!)

2) could be said about any player except - 1 RB - league 1 team of the season last season, therefore proven at this level, 1 RB still at his peak and played his career (including 40 odd games last season) at higher level and fans of his previous club rate him very highly, 1 LB - don't know much about but highly rated.

3) How proven was Antonio? 19, I think, when we signed him, and playing for Tooting and Mitcham, non league, less than a year before we signed him? Think all agree, AP included, that we would like him or similar for next season. You sound very silly talking about "MK reject" you know, full well, he was a player they were desperate to keep and made the league 1 team of the season.

4) funny how important Schneiderlin is when you were arguing with me about 6 months ago saying he was crap! But agree would like more competition in CM, but we have two good CM, then we have Puncheon who played well there for MK, Butterfield, Wooton, Lallana could all do a job, but would be very happy if we did sign another CM, not end of the world if we don't.

5) Yes. Bizarre, of course you plan on good players continuing to be good! He has done it last few seasons and is getting better so why not?

6) Yes there is - reports on OS of fitness tests - highest score in club. Yes he could get injured again but remember Lee Barnard, 35 goals in 75 for Southend at this level, and 9 in 20 for us.

7) agree but someone on here has posted he has said he is signing this week so hopefully resolved.

Sorry but that is just complete t*ss.

You take out the three best players from ANY team in this division and tell me that they can cope ?? You have to be having a laugh really.

The fact that we are so dependant on Schneiderlin shows that he is playing IMO below his level, there is no way that we could replace him if we went, no way no how at this level.

We do need another CM but if we don't it isn't our whole season over, we had a decent end to last season with only Wotton as back up which is respectively detrimental to the team when he plays. Puncheon can play there, Gobern could play there, apparantly that Dean Harley or whatever his name is on trial is looking pretty good, Butterfield can play there.

Where else ?? On the wing ?? Harding, Dickson, Lallana, Puncheon, Ox-C can play there.

Up front i think we need another player as a definate for if Lambert crocks it, i don't trust Connelly for a whole season but then Lallana can play there.

This is league one FFS, half the teams really are not that great and we won't be without more than 9 first team players for the majority unless we are really unlucky.

Because we ended the season very well and in all due respect have only lost two Subs and have strengthened the defence.

The best two sides in the league have left and only really Wednesday have anything close to their quality, Charlton and Swindon have been weakened.

Huddersfield look a tad stronger, IF Carsley and Howard perform and they do not bleed any first team players.

If managed correctly we will be ok.

Stop f*cking panicing.

Bump, seeing as Alpine is ignoring it

I don't know why anybody bothers debating with Alpine. It doesn't matter whether he's right or wrong (he's capable of both IMO) he will never, ever concede a point, no matter how compelling the argument against his may be, and, because of his track record, few will concede a point to him either. This makes any thread interminable.

I am flumuxed as to what would be in a transfer policy that would ensure we got results midweek, in the north on muddy pitches like Hartlepool. A CCC right back, a League 1 team of the year rightback, or perhaps one of the best attacking left backs in league 1? No, OK, please enlighten me then.

we need around 77 to 84 points for automatic promotion.

once we had the basis of our team, and got our first win 7 games in, we averaged 2 points per game which gives us 92 points for a season - with those bad performances on wet midweek marshes included! We don't need to improve!

Its a shame, but then the reason i think people don't concede points is because he is the same.

IMO you need to look at your arguement from both sides, and at times admit your wrong, if you can't do that there is no point argueing in the first place IMO.

(not saying i am right this time BTW)

Even with the bad start, take away the points deduction(which Saints won't have next season) the club was 3 points behind Leeds in 2nd place and automatic promotion.

still not good enough fro most people.

was speaking to someone the other day who was certain Pardew wasn't the right manager as he cannot get results. Baffled the hell out of me.

Is this the same Puncheon who consistently got so many assists after he signed for us? Alpine, You are going by complete guess work, i could just come on here and say Connolly will not get injured and it is exactly the same guessing game.

He could very well break his leg against Plymouth or not get injured once. You're clearly just moaning for either the attention, to **** people off or just you're very bored.

9 assists for Puncheon with his poor performances and bad attitude compared with 2 from Antonio who we can't do without???!!

Agree Crabs, agree, shame that, unless we have better in our sights ??

I don't know. Lambert-alikes (although RL is by far more competent) are not as common as people think. Howard's one, Henderson is possibly another, Jon Parkin is one, as is Ben Burgess... I can't think of any other alternatives? :(

Depends what you are really looking for, your not going to replace Lambert, nor are you really going to match him in the respect of the way we play (which is predominantly long ball really) and his goal scoring, for player like that to come here and sit behind Lambert on the bench will just never happen unless his heart is not in it and his monthly wedge is huge.

What i think AP wants is a big target man that can bully defences and the midfield can play off of, will be good enough to do a good job and will be happy to sit behind Lambert. There are a few out there that could do that job, and TBF if AP is not working on this and a CM he has mentally lost it.

As for Ben Burgess, i agree he seems like the perfect signing, but if you analyze the move there must be something behind the scenes that we as fans do not see, i mean we are talking about a guy that has done a job in the CCC for a while and was promoted to the prem, in that respect you would expect him to move back to the Champ or a half decent League one team, not a team that is skint.

If you see what i mean ????

Take apart our squad, player for player and tell me which team in this league has more quality than us?

Yes, we're lacking depth in a couple of positions, but although we reckon Huddersfield and Sheff Weds will be strong, do they really have any depth to their squads? Yes both teams have a handful of quality players, but even without additions our squad is currently the best in League 1.

This isn't complacency, I'm taking nowt for granted, we won't get promotion by just turning up to games, but I just don't understand the complete lack of confidence some people have.

We all know that we've not finished in the transfer market, so sit back, relax and look forward to the season ahead. Life must be pretty depressing when your outlook is as negative as some on here.....

Fair play to Huddersfield, IMO. You don't build an excellent stadium like their's and expect to stay in League One. They have pretty big plans too. Are we to expect other teams to sit back while we dominate..? No.

We may expect them to realise who's boss, but not to sit back..! ;)

It all comes down to that conversation I had with Alpine about two years ago, where he said that in his opinion, people who did not go to games had a more valid opinion than people did go. Completely barking.

I remember something along those lines. Twas brilliant.

Let's face it, there are some people who just won't sleep at night until we have a first team of 11 "too good for this league, nPC/PL-quality" players, with 11 "too good for this league, nPC/PL-quality" players as back up, and another 11 "too good for this league, nPC/PL-quality" players as back up for the back up.

And even if we did, there will still be some wet n'windy Tuesday nights up north where we don't get the result we want. And the odd Saturday afternoon in East London. It's part of the excitement of being a football fan.

I genuinely believe that, even if we don't make any more signings, we'll get promoted. But it would be nice to make a couple more good signings, and do it with style.

We did not lose to one Northern team away from home in a midweek match last season.

In fact we won at Hartlepool in very testing conditions in a midweek match last year. I would say it was one of our best away performances of the season. I seem to recall slipping up at Tramere on a Saurday afternoon, and a few southern teams such as Swindon, Colchester and Gillingham. We did not really lose away that much and if we carry that form into this season we will be in the top 2.

Alpine is just proving what we all know and that is he is just full of hot air and can only ever see the negatives. Facts are lost on him as HE KNOWS what is in his head and that is the truth that fits his argument despite a million other posters attempts to put him right with actual facts.
