Chez Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 the guy works his arse off in games, is strong and has a turn of pace. Tremendous signing at this level. The skates loved him and many didn't want him to go even though Defoe was his replacement. Can't see it happening as there are other Prem sides that would genuinely be interested never mind Championship sides.

doddisalegend Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Forgetting our level' date=' are they as rich as us?[/quote'] Does that matter? Can you imagine the blow to team morale if he comes to us on the sort of wage that he is used too.I t would make more sense for him to go where he'll get the best wages we'd be silly to upset what appears to be a good team spirit be bring in a overpaid big name player. If he wants to play for league one wages than snap him up but I'd imagine he'd get better offers else where on the wage front.
Colinjb Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 More chance of me getting a season ticket at krap nottarf.

Dave Benson Phillips Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 He is currently training with Newcastle but apparantly they can't afford his wages, just to put things into perspective.
FMPR Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 these signing often have the tendancy to f*** up as well, player comes in on big money with a massive ego, thinks he is above the team and the level and never quite does it. Thats not in Benjanis character at all
Saint Without a Halo Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Would rather have three or four committed experienced Championship level players for the same price!
S-Clarke Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 He'd be a good signing, but i'm not sure we need to blast a load of cash on him, we only need a decent player to backup lambo (i.e henderson). Would rather it went on a quality CM.
Daren W Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Now in the Daily Mail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1296969/Southampton-launch-raid-bring-free-agent-Benjani-St-Marys.html Can't see it happening if he's training with Newcastle. That said if he does join then it sends a massive statement of intent to the Championship and League One... Interesting times...
LostBoys Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Reported on Betfair, the Mirror, the Mail and now the Echo - its bound to be true then!! You are having a laugh
Saint Without a Halo Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Why splash out premier level wages on a player who will be too old by the time we get there! I believe in building up the squad as we rise in exactly the way we have been doing to date. In this way we try to keep the books as close to balancing as we can! Look what happened to poopy by buying silly!
Turkish Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Thats not in Benjanis character at all maybe not, but in general it tends to be the way these signings work out. I dont think it'll happen anyway, i am amazed PL and CCC are not queuing up to sign him. Chapel End Charlie wont want him anyway, he is over 30.
NorthamSteve Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I can't believe people are talking about this as if it were ever going to happen. Get a grip people.
The Godfather Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Probaly come via Benjani's agent to get the move that will earn him the most money, as he was on massive money at City, can't see many clubs outside the premiership affording his wage demands.
sussexsaint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I can't believe people are talking about this as if it were ever going to happen. Get a grip people. Fair point but its nice to be in the news for a change with this sort of story rather than all the **** we had to put up with in the past

Utter madness, that alone is reason why he will not be joining us.
surrey1saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I would be very surprised if he were to come to us. We wouldn't pay his wages, surely?
Joensuu Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Perfect story to convince other potential signings of our size and ambition, while sheltering them from the media spotlight.
ericofarabia Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I don't think a big wage would damage morale if he worked his arse off for it. It would be crazy for players to not want better players in their team because of money. Just shows them, if they want bigger money too, get saints promoted and wages will no doubt increase. Not that there is a cat in hells chance of this going through, but the salary a player of his ilk would be expecting would completely blow any current payers contracts out of the water, and i think would cause possible disharmony especially when contracts are due for renewal and players/agents have seen how much is the going rate. I've seen various quotes that he was on 50 -60000 quid a week at Man City and the article below indicates he doesn't really want to give up the lifestyle associated with that sort of wedge just yet ... which is probably why clubs aren't falling over themselves to sign someone who works his arse off but rarely scores..... Info Benjani Mwaruwari living large in Europe! All about Football Stars and their Salaries, what Benjani Mwaruwari is paid, Salaries for Stars and more on Mywage Zimbabwe. Benjani Mwaruwari, earns £50 000 per week, which is a pretty good salary for a soccer player! Benjani Mwaruwari, who is the captain of the national team, Zimbabwe Warriors, is one of the best soccer players the country has ever produced. Based in England, the player has vowed to make investments that will ensure he lives a comfortable life when he retires, unlike some players who suffer due to poor planning. To this end, Mwaruwari has invested heavily in property in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Zimbabwe Currently staying in a £1, 8-million mansion in Manchester, Mwaruwari is on a £50 000 wage per week at Manchester City. Among the properties he owns is included a £2,1 million house in the exclusive area of Bournemouth where he used to stay during his time at Portsmouth. He recently built a mansion in Malawi and this fueled speculation that his parents could be relocating to the country of their origin, but Mwaruwari dismissed them. Last year he took bought an American-made £60 000 Cadillac to join his luxury fleet, which includes a BMW M6, a VW Touareg, a BMW X5 and a Range Rover. Some of the cars are kept at the striker’s properties in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Mwaruwari said: “I am buying just about everything. I have invested heavily in property and other things. I cannot disclose what the investments are because people talk too much.” if we want to somebody to run his arse off lets put in a cheeky bid for Brett Ormerod!!
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Who's our highest paid player at the moment? I guess it's either Lambert or Fonte, and their probably on 10k p/w maximum. We'd have to probably triple that at least before we even started talking to Benjani.
supersonic Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I would be very surprised if he were to come to us. We wouldn't pay his wages, surely? Well he's a free agent at the moment so yes we would as third parties are illegal in football
Spudders Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Perfect story to convince other potential signings of our size and ambition, while sheltering them from the media spotlight. This is what I was thinking. Would be a great ploy of Nicola to fuel these sorts of stories in order to get true tragets more interested in us as a club!
doddisalegend Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 But where is the line??? Lambert probably earns more than most, but it doesn't seem to matter. If someone earnt more than him, would he mind? So at what point does it become TOO much more? Double, treble? It would highlight players more worried about themselves than the team wouldn't it? If they want SFC to do well they should be delighted a good player would come here regardless of wages. But no, this isn't going to happen. I'm embarassingly increased my belief in this story to about 3% now in all the excitement. And it's harsh to call him a non-scoring forward like brett etc., because L1 is a far lower level. For all we know, Lambert is a non-scoring forward in the top flight. I suppose if you imagine something like this happening in your work place how would you feel? "Hey it's ok the new guy earns four times more than me. It's for the good of the company" if you'd be alright with that your a better man than me. Footballers are like everyone else that sort of thing upsets people. Now if he's prepared to take an 75%-80% pay cut it wouldn't be a problem but I can't see it just so he can play league one.
waggy Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Poor striker with a poor games to goal ratio, claims to be 31 but thought to be older, and he was a skate....... nuff said. No thanks, we need a young, hungry up and coming player who will push for a first team place, not some over the hill, overpaid yesterday man who will be happy sit on the bench and take a big wage.

ericofarabia Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Sister is on the run from UK Border Agency He has quite a colourful past himself, including sex scandals whilst on international duty, fighting with fellow Zimbo Ndlovu (?) over wives and girlfriends and a court case over his use of a dodgy Soccer agentin transfers to and from Skatesmyth. Hmm ... house in Des Res area of Bomo as well.
corky morris Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Am i the only one who wouldnt want him playing for Saints? I just dont rate him........
Daren W Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 (But I would rather us sign Tyson) Me too, a much better option..
Chez Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Am i the only one who wouldnt want him playing for Saints? I just dont rate him........ League 1 is a bloody long way from the Premiership. I'd of thought he would score a few at this level. He got 15 in the Premiership in his second season at the skates.
Thedelldays Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 he would be superb at this level if he tried....his power and work rate alone would make him unplayable to most opposition
benjii Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Two points: One - I doubt this will happen... but... Two - those of you saying he doesn't score, blah, blah, blah... you are off your rockers if you're implying he wouldn't be an amazing asset on the pitch. If he went to a Championship club he would arguably be the best forward in the Championship. If he comes to us he will be the best forward in League One by some distance. As Thedelldays said, he would simply be a level above anything else the defenders in this league face. He would murder them.

League 1 club's fans in Premiership striker not good enough for us shocker
Lets B Avenue Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Whilst I don't believe this for one minute (in fact it could be a misprint and Benjii is being signed ) I had to cheapen myself and take a look at P****y Mong Line, to see how they were reacting. One twonk called Magic Man said it could be true as "they pay silly money down there, so I've heard." You really couldn't make this up.
alpine_saint Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 I dont believe it either. I cannot believe we would fork out so much wages to a PL has-been whilst restricting our expense on a much more cirtical CM requirement. If this happens, I think many will wonder about AP losing the plot.

scotty Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Would be gutted if he went to you lot why would you care either way?

Is this not what lawrie did in the 70's......buy players from the higher leagues who were deemed to be finished only to revive their careers and turn them into winners? For the record I don't believe the Benjani rumour but stranger things have happened.
NickG Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjani_Mwaruwari deal done then!
Saint Garrett Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Southampton Benjani Joined Southampton on 23 July 2010 on a 2 year deal he said "I am so Proud to be at the club" and stated he wanted to help the team win the league this season LOL !!!

supersonic Posted 23 July, 2010 Posted 23 July, 2010 Another classic Wikipedia quote from Big Ben himself "On leaving Portsmouth Benjani spoke of difficult times at the club. He declared that he had struggled to adjust to local customs involving smelling like a fish, dressing like a pikey and sleeping with your sister" Quality!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjani_Mwaruwari#Portsmouth
