Saints sign Butterfield

"I tried to get hold of Stern but he is currently out of the country," added Burley."

Stern John in delaying contract renewal till the last minute? Shocker.

Butterfield, good solid signing. Last season we had Ostemobor and James at RB, now we have Butterfield and Richardson, good improvement.

It also shows that some rumours on 606 come true! Didn't someone post that someone on the Palace 606 forum said he was on a flight for Zurich? How prophetic!

Every footballer in the known universe, and some from beyond, have been linked to Saints on 606. I think it's more the law of averages than any particular credibility to that site.

this signing seems to fit the two good players for every position model, great to see such strength in depth and having 24 good players in a squad not 35 average ones like we had in our PL relegation season, a smaller quality squad is what wins things.

+1. Our squad now looks like this -

Davis (Forecast)

Richardson (Butterfield) - Fonte (Martin) - Jaidi (Seaborne) - Harding (Dickson, Mills)

Puncheon (?) - Hammond (Wotton) - Schneiderlin (Pulis LOL) - Lallana (Holmes)

Lambert (Connolly) - Barnard (?)

Still left is Gobern and Oxlade-Chamberlain too. So just a back up GK, 1 RW (Antonio preferably), a CM (Stock or Danns) and a pacey striker (Papa would be nice but seems unlikely) required.

Cracking signing at this level, interestingly he can play RM/CM as well - so he's the total replacement for James, but better and more experienced.

...and he's a free, surprised it's taken someone so long to take a punt on him you're guaranteed an honest player.

Oxlade can play on the right, he also looks useful and he is being played in friendlies, maybe Pardew is thinking of using him as back up for Puncheon.

Maybe we'll sign a RW but if not Oxlade-Chamberlain is plenty good enough to fill in there and we need to develop him/Martin. CM would be my main priority and even if we only signed one more player I'd settle for that if it's a quality CM. That said ideally I'd like one more striker though again with emphasis on quality.

You all seem convinced this is a great signing but the facts are he's the wrong side of 30 and his previous club released him . Perhaps a pause for thought may be in order .

I welcome new players to this great club and I hope he does well , but I think I'll wait to see him play for us before passing any judgment .

He was at the end of his contract.

His manager wanted him to stay.

He is experienced at higher level.

He can play well, in CCC, at RB,RM and CB.

Read the comments of fans in a division above us who wanted him to stay and watch him every week

I could be wrong but I think every Premiership side have over 30's playing very regularly for them. I dont think his club released him - he was out of contract and declined to take up the offer of a further contract. It is true not all signings work but AP's record to date is pretty good. Those that failed to impress had very short contracts or loanees.

Wrong side of 30 means 35+ he is 30 years of age, hth.

Don't know..

Dickson or Harding

Richardson or Butterfield

Connolly or Barnard

Would be surprised if any of those would not be guaranteed a start at every other club in this division

Thanks for that Positive Pete .

I was merely suggesting we should wait and see before prejudging whether this is an good signing or not , the new season starts in a few weeks time after all . As for his previous managers true opinion of him can I ask just how often do you hear any manager say "I'm desperate to be rid of this player" ?

You assure me he will "play well" for us - which rather begs the question on how much direct observation of the (recent form) of this player are you basing that remark on ?

There are quite literally hundreds of '30 something' footballers with experience of 'higher level' football on the market - the record shows this is no guarantee of a good signing .

Sometimes I feel like I'm dreaming when I'm reading these pages. I seriously cannot believe that we have the team we have and are still building. If you had told me last May that this season we'd have the likes of Lambert and Barnard with Connolly as backup, Puncheon, Hammond, Harding, Frazer, Jaidi, Fonte, Dickson and now Butterfield, I would laugh in your face so loudly, it would turn it inside out!

This coming season, we now have THE best defence in this league, particularly with Kelvin in goal. Could we play a 5 at the back Fonte, Jaidi, Butterfield, with Frazer and Dickson acting as wing backs. Stick Morgan and Hammond in front of them and allow Puncheon, Lallana and Lambert to run riot up front.

Anyway, leaving strategy behind, we have the best defence, arguably the best midfield in Morgan, Hammond, Lallana and Puncheon and then THE highest scoring strikers in this league last season (or there abouts), 3 words O MY GOD!

Yes we could do with another CM, maybe a Papa would fit nicely in this team, someone that can throw a curve ball if you like and Papa certainly fits into that category. Now, look at the ages of these players, apart from Jaidi and Kelvin, the team ranges from young flyers to peak key players. Keep this team together this season, no more major changes, and this team will be flying for next season, hopefully in the new Chamionship. Add a couple of players to this team and we have agreat Championship squad (if we have those two additional players, not so vital this season, but for next, it will make a real impact) and one that can challenge for promotion that season. Now, and forgive me for my headiness and jumping the gun, but how many of these players can play in the Premk IF they stick together as a team for this season and next? Hmmm, now there's one for future discussion, sometime into next season when we're topping the Championship maybe?

Anyway, back to what I started off saying, I LOVE this team, what a great bunch of players! I couldn;t ask for more, I really couldn't. Are the days of fast flowing attacking football returning to Southampton? AND will a new tradition be born? One that creates the legend at the back, in DEFENCE? Surely not, surely the age old addage of scoring 5 if the opposition gets 4 hasn't gone? Surely Saints won't have the best defensive record in all the leagues? Nah, I surely would be dreaming then!

Bizarre.

What can we judge any new signing on other than - level playing at, how thought of by his manager (who offered him a contract for a team that was competing for CCC play offs) and fans?

There is no guarantee that he will be a good signing and as you see we will see as the season goes on, but it looks a very good signing to all (well apart from one!)

Pleased by the signing, we shouldnt need to look over our shoulders at our defence any more.

Worried by no progress on CM and pacey winger still.

EDIT : Has he been brought in because Richardson has REALLY dislocated his shoulder ?

Unbelievable. Worried by NO progress? A couple of days ago Alps there was "no progress" on defence.

30-34 is the right side of 30, 35-39 is the wrong side of 30. As someone has pointed out guess Gerrard, Lampard etc are obviously too old for us then.

You take an somewhat 'unauthodox' view on simple mathematics . Players over the age of 30 are (as a rule) past their footballing/athletic prime and are more likely to pick up injury's you will concede ?

If we must talk about higher level players such as Gerrard & Lampard then I would point out how easily a much younger German midfield totally outplayed England in the World Cup just a few weeks ago . Had you chosen you could have employed another 30 year old big name footballer (Micheal Owen's) record last season to prove the polar opposite of the case you are trying to make .

The truth is that some 30 something players still have much to offer the game and some unfortunately (Paul Wotton for instance) are past it frankly .
