Genk Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Do we think that or know that Hammond is going to continue the roll?? Personally I think Fonte should captain the side and I see he did in the FC Thun game during the first half. Did Hammond take over in the second? Views?
L1Minus10 Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Hammond for me. Plays best position for it as well.
Saint Garrett Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Think it depends whether we know if Hammond is going to be first choice, If we pick up another CM then I cant see it being Schneiderlin that gets dropped. Fonte for me.
MarkSFC Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Fonte for me as he will (baring injuries) be first on the team sheet I expect. Hopefully Hammond wont play every week because we will have signed someone better!!
Andy_Porter Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Hammond. No point making a change for changes sake.
SnailOB Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Whats Fontes english like ? Always felt that a suitable Captain is normally quite vocal and a good communicator and that best position for that would be CB or CM (but then i'm a bit old skool in that respect). From the sounds of some reports, Martin seems to be an organiser and very vocal which is something that is always good in a captain BUT obviously he wouldn't be a candidate at this time. Also, if we are looking for a commanding CM then would think it is Hammonds place that would be under threat. Think we will have to see if there are anymore signings.
Nidger Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 If we do end up signing Brian Stock, I think he will be in the running for the captain / vice captain role seeing as though he was the Doncaster Rovers captain last season. I would keep Hammond as captain myself, but I do agree that Fonte definitely has the required attributes to be a captain of the club!
NickG Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Hammond's place has got to be under certain amount of threat therefore so would his captaincy
John Smith Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Hammond was superb and showed particular leadership qualities in the final run in. Some games he was immense, he won me over this season and am a big fan. If AP does decide to change captaincy roles, I think Fonte would be great and make him feel more wanted. Lastly, IF they do decide to make a captaincy change, I really implore AP to phone Stu first. I couldn't stand another episode and months of posts because they hadn't asked him first! Oh no, I've just accidently hijacked this thread on Stu's behalf, someone, for the sake of God, refund him his £3 for his ticket!
Barry the Badger Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Hammond's place has got to be under certain amount of threat therefore so would his captaincy I really don't think Hammonds place is under any threat. He will be the captain.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Can't believe his position is being questioned... I thought he was fantastic last season. Ok, he had his bad games, but without a shadow of a doubt Spiderman had more bad games than Deano. P.S - I would just like to point out that with that comment, I am in no way suggesting that Spiderman should be dropped over Deano. I just feel that anyone we bring in will have to accept that they will have to be super impressive in training or for Deano to turn into Wooooooooooooton.

In all of the matches I have been able to see, during last season, whether LIVE or recorded for later, Dean Hammond has, at the very least, always put in a worthwhile 90 minutes. At times he was a driving force, and at times he hung in there. I'd rather he played for us than against us. Yeah Captain, on the field, next season too.
doggface Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 I like dean hammond, was a good signing no doubt. But beyond MS & DH we have nothing. We need a quality addition in cm and it could be the differnce between success & failiure, fwiw I think we will get one.

I agree, but I think we need at least 2 CM players: 1) A goalscoring creative midfielder (Danns maybe);and 2) A ball winning holding midfielder (I'm open to suggestions on this 1 but maybe Stock) A quick skillful winger to give Lallana and Puncheon competition for their places would also be good. And a backup / alternative to Rickie is a must! I'm sure AP has had a certain player in mind for this role ever since the Gillingham game where he started Rickie on the bench and we struggled! Has anybody got any other suggestions to fill the above positions?

Turkish Posted 18 July, 2010 Posted 18 July, 2010 I keep hearing 'back-up for Lambert', has Barnard left the club and I've not heard about it?? Totally different players, Barnard is good but not in the same mould as RL, we couldn't play like we do with Barnard and Conolly up front, we need a big strong striker as cover in case RL needs a rest or gets injured we were lucky last season he didn't.
kelkel31 Posted 20 July, 2010 Posted 20 July, 2010 i agree that hammond was the right player at the right time, he was a worthwhile addition last season and often was the driving force in the team. Id class him as a solid captain but i believe that is more to do with his effort on the pitch rather than leadership skills. the problem i have is i think dean is playing at his level, he could play championship football but i dont think he would be a guaranteed regular at that level hence why as we are building for the future the club might be looking for someone as a replacement rather than cover for his position. if no player comes in in that mold then theres no reason to change his role as captain on the pitch, if we do that player may need to take on the captains role as well as i dont see any other first team player providing the voice we need on the field
