Spudders Posted 13 July, 2010 Share Posted 13 July, 2010 Any of you ever have to work from home? When you first worked from home did you have any problems with getting work done? I thought working from home would be great and in some respects it is. BUT…. I am SO easily distracted that I’m not getting much done during the daytime. Oddly I find it easier to get on with work in the evening which is allowing me to stay on top of what I need to do, but it means I’m just spending the whole day ‘trying’ to work as well as my evenings actually doing the work. I’m hoping this is something I will settle into and get past, but I thought that a month or so ago! Here are some things that have distracted me today……….. Ebay and various other interweb sites including this one A lorry out the back of the house Cars pulling up out the front of the house Listening for the postman (I’m expecting a package) Dirty windows (now clean) Putting clothing in the washer Hanging washing out to dry Getting washing in from the rain The rain generally Clouds A bee Flys in my room (chasing flys with book) Picking a dead fly off of my floor A cat in the garden Making food Making cups of tea (x about 5) An aeroplane that was lounder than usual Cleaning the kitchen …………..I could go on, but you get the idea. What can I do to help myself be less distracted? Ta.

Special K Posted 13 July, 2010 Share Posted 13 July, 2010 After years on working in an office or on site - but always leaving the house to go to work - i started working from home about 3 months ago. It was fine when no-one was in the house, but as soon as the missus or nippers came home, i couldn't do it, even if they left me alone. Ended up having to get an office. I'm just too used to having a workplace different to my home.
bridge too far Posted 13 July, 2010 Share Posted 13 July, 2010 I used to work from home a lot and it suited us very well. I'd work when Mr TF was on shift (even if it was a Saturday or Sunday) and then not feel guilty about not working when he was off shift on a weekday. As long as I got the work done, the boss didn't mind how and when I worked.

The only way he can do it is to get up at 8am, put on a suit and tie and go into his spare room office, come out at 12.30, make lunch, back to work at 1pm till 5pm. If he dosnt put on the suit or start on the dead of 9am is curtains and he ends up watching Oprah all day.
BadgerBadger Posted 14 July, 2010 Share Posted 14 July, 2010 I get loads done working from home, can be too many distractions at work disrupting my flow. Getting going is hard work but with Sepultura blasting over the speakers it's a doddle. That said I generally do a days work in 3 hrs and get on with more important stuff like walking the dog and tending to the garden whilst keeping an eye on me emails. Wouldn't like to do it more than 2 days a week though, enjoy the social/banter at work.

MorningtonCrescent Posted 15 July, 2010 Share Posted 15 July, 2010 As above - the best way I find to get work done is to get up at a decent time and have a wash/shave, then suited up. The suit puts you in "work mode" and that chore around the house doesn't seem to become as appealing when in a suit! Also, I too often find myself catching up with small work tasks outside normal office hours - this is fine for me as it means more flexibility. As others have said, its what fits you best and gets the work done. Making the WFH day more formal is definitely what works for me. (today, I have not shaved or put my suit on - a few long days on the road have seen to it that today will be a "short working day" for me!) SNSUN Posted 15 July, 2010 Share Posted 15 July, 2010 I would murder a billion people to be able to work at home. I definitely think I would have the ambition and discipline to do it although, if truth be told, I do like writing books in my spare time and I haven't written anything for about five years. Still, work would be different. Sadly, short of breaking my spine and making the Underground stick a phone line in so I can answer customer service calls, it's not happening. (Which is probably just as well - I don't want to murder a billion people nor break my spine.)

Saint Fan CaM Posted 18 July, 2010 Share Posted 18 July, 2010 Have worked from home for quite some years, however I visit clients 4 days/week so those days are just like a normal work day. I find that if I try to do work in my study I am often distracted by my home PC with Saintsweb and 'boys toys' such as my guitars/keyboard/drums etc. So if I have a serious amount of stuff to get through work-wise, I find setting up my 'mobile office' in the conservatory to be much more productive. Like the video says, it's important to set yourself little goals before doing anything else - even making a drink....i.e. "if I finish these expenses, I'll make myself a coffee". Basically though, I really look forward to my 'office day' at home - much less stressful than a day earning.
