FC Thun v SAINTS - Match Thread

I wouldn't read too much into a rusty chop and change side losing 4-2 to a Swiss side on pre season. It's a good wake up call, no doubt giving Pardew food for thought. It's better to get the mistakes out of the way early in pre-season so you can learn from them, rather than in the first game of the season. Holiday is over, the real work begins now.

OK, so Thun have had their pre-season and have their first league game on Saturday, but on the other hand they have only just won promotion back to the Swiss Super League after a season in the second division. Maybe Saints should bring back one or two of the Thun team with them when they come home....

Scoreline was far from what we wanted but as far as the team are concerned most players got a run out and 2 formations were tried. 1st game for us and last of pre-season for them and all that. Will serve as a stick to beat the team with as pares no doubt will demand better. Bit of a shame the other saints xi lost too but at least things can only get better.

Apart from it only being an early pre season friendly for match fitness you only need to look at the teams in each half.

1st half - Saints Lost 3-0 and only had 4 likely starters in a Saints XI come August 7th - Davis, Harding or Dickson, Puncheon, Fonte

2nd half - Saints Won 2-1 and had 7 likely starters in a Saints XI come August 7th - Harding or Dickson, Puncheon, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Lambert, Fonte, Connolly

The abscense of Lallana is a little worrying though don't you think. To not see him either half and no mention why he was not in the side is strange in my eyes. If he were to be on his way who would be the natural replacement?

Discussed already beyond the point of boredom on here AND a thread of it's own TBH.

Bit of a drive back to Italy so I'm unwinding over a beer which I couldn't have earlier. I'll give you the benefit of my view but I'm completely confused by who is who these days, especially without seeing a teamsheet! I thought it was Forecast in goal for the first half: if it was Davis I dunno what he's done with his hair, lost a bit, looks like!

It was a good work-out, make no mistake: Thun looked sharp and start their competitive season this weekend and they had a bit of pace throughout the side. Far better to play them (on a very good pitch) than semi-professionals like Havant & Waterlooville etc, and a team far better than pretty well all in League 1 if a little less physical. Dickson got skinned a few times and his passing was poor: as noted, he gave away the pass for the goal. I didn't realise it was Callum McNish playing, and he's not quite there yet against this level of opposition

Different game in the second half when Schneiderlin, Lambert and Connolly all made a big difference. Connolly did look bright, with good movement. Oxlade-Chamberlain did _very_ well: pace to burn, still needs a bit of experience to make the right decision and the final delivery but the sort of player you're going to look forward to seeing coming on. He went off with cramp, but he'd worked very hard, including covering his full-back. I think all the planned subs had come on as they sent on Jaidi: gawd, he looks slow and could have been in the book in a non-friendly and in fact after the end of the game he was doing sprinting training with one of the coaches.

Mills came on for Dickson and looked OK. A bit slow for raw pace perhaps but did a good covering tackle and looked comfortable on the ball and in his interpassing. Martin I think could certainly make it in League 1 if not higher, and has done well considering he came into football late via Eastleigh: he's a talker and I think has the intelligence and basic pace to improve.

We played some good football and I'm reasonably optimistic, having actually seen the game;-). No need to cut your wrists on a first friendly, honest. For a first match I enjoyed it, and it was far better than some friendlies I've seen with some good interpassing. We obviously need to cut out some of the mistakes and improve some of the positional play, but nothing that can't be achieved. We've got a good team, especially if Lallana plays!

He is injured. It says so on the website.

always far too much importance placed on pre-season friendlies, especially the early ones....

we've won them all in pre-season and had a bad start/bad season and we've lost them all in pre-season and had a good start (well thats rare actually ) or rather a good season!!

Roll on august 6th ....

Well, he was on the coach and gave me a wave as I was parked up when they arrived. I then went for a lovely swim in Lake Thun and turned up a few minutes before the match. I thought I was mad to go to a pre-season friendly but there were quite a few nutters who came all the way from the UK. I think everyone would agree that it was a lovely place for a short break. Most of the Saints fans stood on the terrace on the lake side where some of the locals were buying them beers but there were quite a few of us sensible ones who ended up in the shade of the "main" stand; the people just in front of me were Saints fans living in Switzerland and there were others behind me. Lets face it, Saints fans are everywhere: Basel, Berne, Zurich, Italy...

Well that's not really a lot to go on TBH.

Fraser Richardson has dislocated his shoulder apparently.

Where have you heard this Swis?

Another former heard it from Parky

So essentially guesswork as we get on here and even IF true then it's usually just a couple of weeks complete rest and then rehab begins.

NB Name actually spelt incorrectly on Charlton fan site.

Thanks Sue, I said a while back that we need to bring young players through for the sake of our long term future, these 2 players in particular look very, very promising.

Based on your first paragraph I doubt you'd have even recognise Frazer Richardson but did you seen ANYONE with their arm in a sling confused0024.gif

I don't think you can ever read to much into pre-season, especially the first match against decent opposition. Good report from suewhistle good to see Connolly looking lively, lets hope he can stay fit & have a good season. Martin sounds like he is coming on well. All about fitness & getting some game time for now.

Lets hope that's B/S from the Charlton web site, that would be a blow if true.

Apart from players on the fringe I've yet to see any first teamer really put themselves about on a pre season game. Nine times out of ten it's just an exercise to stretch the limbs and shake off the "cobwebs" and get back into the old routine.

Again, roll on the new season..

spot on hell

Chartlon lost to wimbledon AFC 2-0

Bristol rovers lost to bath city 2-0

Plymouth got tonked 3-1 by Torquay

looking at those results 4-2 against a team playing CL last season doesn't look bad at all. We will only get stronger in the next few weeks as fitness levels go up and the players shake the rust out of their systems.

Just a thought that occurred to me, but in view of the moaning about not telling the fans I reckon that the game was, genuinely, organised at the last minute. Sure the training camp was planned, but that was going to be an intensive and closed affair. Given the late news from Saints, even later on the Thun FC site and AP's comments about 'too soon' I reckon that this came up late in the day. No charge to the fans either, which there might have been if this had been a money-making exercise like Poopey's tour.:-)

Just to correct you slightly, Thun played CL football about 4 or 5 years ago - last season they were promoted from the Swiss 2nd division. That said, they appear to have a good pre-season (I think won all of their 6 games including against us) and start their league season this weekend.

Fair enough my mistake. I'm pretty sure they're still a much better side than the non-league/league two sides some of our legaue one rivals lost to though.

Absolutely, I did look at the list of opening pre-season games & think 1 or 2 had games against PL 'names' but then that could just have been their youth team, as Winchester played our Saints XI. No-one would have played a team as prepared as Thun.

Just watched the highlights and some of Thun's play was better than any League One team is likely to serve up.

Major positive appears to be David Connolly for us. Put a cracking finish in but got disallowed unfortunately.
