for_heaven's_Saint Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 he's too small and lightweight - and lacks pace yes he can cross the ball and he's tricky even with the ball at his feet - but I'm not sure it's enough - the opposition just brush him of the ball in the photo's from the training camp he looked very unfit - probably needs a season of weight training to bulk up enough to rough it with the big boys! Seems to have worked for Lallana!
crouchi Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 Sadly Lee Holmes is a waste of effort - if he was going to recover he would have made it by now, deserves a place only above Pulis

Andy_Porter Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 I remember watching him away at Millwall in one his few appearances last season and he was one of the best players on the pitch. Could be more than useful this season, even if we could only manage to squeeze 20 games or so out of him. He didn't have a bad game but our whole games was so negative due to having no pace on the wings. Holmes and James could both cross the ball but neither of them could stretch the game at all. If we had Waigo, Antonio, Lallana or Puncheon out wide instead of James/Holmes we would have won IMO.
Andy_Porter Posted 16 July, 2010 Share Posted 16 July, 2010 Sounds promising if Holmes can stay fit (unlikely given his history I would have thought). Having someone who can deliver pinpoint passes into the box would be handy some of our crossing (not to mention corners) was pretty poor at times last season probably because Antonio and Papa where really strikers rather than wingers. Probably more to do with playing Lallana and Puncheon on their "wrong" sides, I don't think Pardew is really interested with our two wide men getting crosses in, it seems like that's what the full backs are instruced to do. musesaint Posted 17 July, 2010 Share Posted 17 July, 2010 I'm starting to wonder how many of the posters slagging him off on here have actually seem him play???? Injuries have been his biggest problem Quality and skill aren't an issue If he stays fit and makes the team I'd like to see the Lee Holmes thread then ........ Cabrone Posted 17 July, 2010 Share Posted 17 July, 2010 I like LH and I'd like to see him take a big role this season. He has a very decent cross on him and is a smarter player than Papa\Antonio IMO - he does lack their pace and physical strength though. Maybe a lot more time spent in the gym? If - and it's a big if - he can stay fit I can see him being regularly selected. With Ricky on the other end of his crosses the goals would flow. Andy_Porter Posted 17 July, 2010 Share Posted 17 July, 2010 There's not a hope in hell either Puncheon or Lallana are going to be dropped and Holmes isn't really an impact sub. So it's either a case of playing 4-5-1 to accomodate Holmes (dropping Baranrd or Connoly in the process), dropping Lallana or Puncheon. Neither going to happen IMO. We be a fairly decent squad player if anyone picks up an injury mind.

Lets say he manages to stay fit during the whole pre season and comes off the bench a few times without getting injured - who does he replace in the side?
