Professor Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Didn't leave Southampton too soon. Only played 16 games for Palace last year and 5 (plus 2 as sub) on loan at Ipswich. Palace manager (in George we trust) Burley says Stern has played his last game for Palace. Shame how good careers in football often just fade away. People who retire on a high are the rarities.
Saint_clark Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Far, far better than people ever gave him credit for. I'd certainly welcome him back as the RL backup we crave. Oh, and he NEVER scored a scrappy goal. They were all quality finishes.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Absolute donkey ! He was so so bad. Wouldn't want him back here, we've moved on
doughnutman Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I would take him back as back up for RL (in the sense that he is a targetman) provided he was very cheap. However, he simply wouldn't bring many of the qualities that RL brings to the team (i.e movement and workrate)
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I'd have him back but for the manner in which he left.
Bucks Saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Absolute donkey ! He was so so bad. Wouldn't want him back here, we've moved on muppet.
niceandfriendly Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Absolute donkey ! He was so so bad. Wouldn't want him back here, we've moved on You're odd. I'm glad that he still "had it" when he played for us, but perhaps his time is up now. Scored some absolute beauties for us, and important ones too.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I couldn't stand him when he played for us either! He was part of a poor team, yes he scored some important goals, but I think any other striker would have scored them as well. I do thank him for keeping us up on the last day of the season, though it just gave us a bit more time before the inevitable happened. He missed a lot of very easy chances for us as well as scoring.
skintsaint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Oh, and he NEVER scored a scrappy goal. They were all quality finishes. but the ones from 6 yards out always seemed to miss..
Saint_clark Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 IMHO, he makes Heskey look good. I couldn't stand him when he played for us either! He was part of a poor team, yes he scored some important goals, but I think any other striker would have scored them as well. I do thank him for keeping us up on the last day of the season, though it just gave us a bit more time before the inevitable happened. He missed a lot of very easy chances for us as well as scoring. Being from Norway and Sheffield respectively, did either of you see him that often?
Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I'm not from Sheffield. I had a season ticket the season that we stayed up on the last day of the season, and went to about 8 away games...so yes, thanks, I saw him more than enough.
Master Bates Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 (edited) And i'm not on this forum. Edited 12 July, 2010 by Master Bates

Well then your comment "any other striker" seems even more ridiculous. 19 goals in a sh*te team - and all of them great finishes - is not an easy accomplishment.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Each to their own opinion. Everyone is welcome to theirs. Location says Sheffield because I moved up here to go to Uni.

The Dogman Of Bassett Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 He's fat and rubbish. Mugged us off big time, why the **** anybody would want him back is beyond me!
saint_stevo Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Pretty much kept us up with his goals the season b4 we got relegated. Then we treated him like **** and he left. Would take him back
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Each to their own opinion. Everyone is welcome to theirs. Ah, you're one of those black is white people. Disagree with the general consensus to cause a discussion.
benjii Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Pretty much kept us up with his goals the season b4 we got relegated. Then we treated him like **** and he left. Would take him back Agree with this. I would take him back if he was happy to play a supporting role and his wages weren't mental.
Appy Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 He was half decent for us here, but i don't think he would get anywhere near our first 11 right now.
Chez Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 laziest ****er I've ever seen in a Saints shirt. I was happy when he left.
Arizona Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 laziest ****er I've ever seen in a Saints shirt. I was happy when he left. I think this is one of those rare subjects we agree on Chez. There is no doubt John had the skills and scored some fabulous goals throughout his career, but f**k me he made MLT look like Ormerod. I remember watching him in the cup game against Ipswich last year. Most disinterested player I've seen at SMS since Robbie Fowler when he was at Cardiff. His lack of work rate cost us as much as his goals gained us IMO. Has also been incredibly average goal wise since he left. 3 goals for Bristol City 2 years ago I think.
Chez Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 His lack of work rate cost us as much as his goals gained us IMO. spot on.

Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Weren't hear when Matty played then? Do you know what, don't bother answering me, I don't deserve one if I spell 'here' like that. What a 'tard.
Quickfire Double Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I'd have him back but for the manner in which he left. This, maybe without the concession to consider having him back if he'd not walked at the start of last season. 'e can, in short, farkoff!
Danish Saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 So in you view, only people that go to games are allowed to have an opinion on players? Nice to feel welcome here! BTW, I might be living in Norway, but I'm not Norwegian.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I thought he did ok for us, but surely it's time to move on.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 There's no way on God's Earth that he would find his way back to Saints while AP is in charge IMO. He just would not fit into the high work ethic and winning mentality that AP demands of his squad. Yes, he was good for us for a time, but he's old news now.
Chicken With A Banjo Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I'm pretty sure the reason he hardly played last season is that he broke his leg in pretty much the first game he played after leaving Saints. I would have him back.
John B Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I Wonder if Stern stayed would we have bought Rickie Lambert
Appy Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I Wonder if Stern stayed would we have bought Rickie Lambert Lambert as back up perhaps .
CWD Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Most underated player we've had in my time supporting saints. Rarely lost the ball, strong, scored goals.... Best player at all those skills since Beattie
corsacar saint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 I do not think SJ will be voluntarily coming anywhere near the city of his own accord, against his will perhaps.[Allegedly] Cannot and will not elaborate.
a1ex2001 Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 laziest ****er I've ever seen in a Saints shirt. I was happy when he left. I thought that title was reserved for Rasiak or do the ungreatfull saints fans on here just pass it from one top scorer to the next as they unfathomably fall out of favour? On a slightly related note I see Clinton Morrison has gone to wednesday now tha is an interesting signing!

You show me a game he broke sweat and I'll show him some gratitude. I liked Rasiak, that didn't change when lazy boy turned up. Edited 12 July, 2010 by Chez
