Andy_Porter Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 it's good to read about Lee Holmes being involved- perhaps he will feature a bit more next season? I hope not. We aren't going to get anywhere if we are relying on players like Holmes and Wotton.
CWD Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Holmes looked really good when he got a run in the first team last season. I rate him, and i think Pardew does too providing he is fully fit. Delighted to see him on the tour as he is our only naturally left sided midfielder (assuming Mills will play as a left back)
suewhistle Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Just filled up the tank, got the picnic stuff and ready for a day out in Switzerland tomorrow. I'll probably go over the top: Great St. Bernard pass (as opposed to the tunnel) as I've never done it and I need to cool off after the weather these last weeks. Then get a multi-ticket for the tunnel on the Swiss side on the way back as they don't charge VAT! Now to print a couple of viamichelin maps, put a fiver in my purse as my subs are due and in case I meet Steve Grant . Any idea how many other nutters there'll be?

Delighted to see him on the tour as he is our only naturally left sided midfielder (assuming Mills will play as a left back) Lallana had a great season on the left. Yes, not left footed but that is part of the reason he did so well. Jason Puncheon is a left footed wide player as is Ryan Dickson.

He played three full games and the draw with Milwall is the one that stands out going with Holmes and James as our two wingers was embarassing. Like I said we won't get out of the league if we're relying on players like him.
Zurichsaint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Any idea how many other nutters there'll be? I won't make it for the game tomorrow, but I'll be there for sure in Fribourg. Hope the weather is ok - there's quite a bit of rain about.
suewhistle Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Yep, rain here too after a steady build up of heat and humidity all day .. and just heard thunder again. Don't think I'll make Fribourg: need to find out first what the taxman here is going to sting me for on my pitiful earnings!
Joesaint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Have to say I think alot of Holmes and really think he is a good player, not low expectations. I know some people are not to keen but he has been a bit injury prone, I hope he is over that.
mancsaint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Met Steve Grant & Stu at Basel airport this morning, so with Suewhistle as well that makes 4 going to Thun, we'll pack out the away end then....not. Was just watching the season review for Swiss Challenge League (their Championship equivalent) and Thun seemed quite handy, dont know the usual standard of their football so will have to wait and see. CWD Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Lallana had a great season on the left. Yes, not left footed but that is part of the reason he did so well. Jason Puncheon is a left footed wide player as is Ryan Dickson. I had forgotten about Punch, but he is better cutting inside. I'm also not sure about Dickson as a winger, a wing back yes, but he's not gonna score goals which we need if we're playing 4-5-1. As you say AL is naturally right footed and was also great when he cut inside, but sometimes you need an out and out winger to beat the man on the outside. I know I'm wasting my breath with a lot of peope on here, but I rate Lee and think he could be important for us this season. However, to quote dannysfc, "we will see !"

Like I said we won't get out of the league if we're relying on players like him. Its nothing to do with low expectations, Pards praised his performance at the time and he would quite likely have had a longer run in the team without inury. If he wasn't up to it, he wouldnt be in Switzerland with the 1st team squad. Still I guess we'll have to agree to disagree

stevegrant Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 There's occasional thunderstorms forecast for later today here, and if they're anything like the one we had last night, there's genuine danger the game might get called off Probably about 5 inches of rain fell in an hour 35 degrees all day until the big dark cloud came over at about 6pm.

Scummer Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Who is "Doc"? A trialist perhaps? David O'Connolly.
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Seriously tempted to make a show on Saturday for the game now. Gonna have a look into it I think... boat and train might work.
stevegrant Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Seriously tempted to make a show on Saturday for the game now. Gonna have a look into it I think... boat and train might work. Someone I know has a space in their car for the trip, doing 2 nights in the Ibis in Fribourg for £100 all in.

I might take that if I don't get a couple of other lads together, but early signs are we have a car load going over. So much for my Saints boycott. FFS

Dave Benson Phillips Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Cheap hotel in Fribourg anyone? Seriously, the dirtiest stinkiest hotel... I don't care, I'll only wet the bed and wake up in my own vomit so not bothered about cleanliness. Any reccomendations? Seems fookin hard to find one anywhere online.

Bigger place and only half an hour away. Would have thought you'd have more luck getting rooms there.

Never been around Europe using their public transport... what are their trains like? Is it feasable to get a ferry and then a train to cut out the driving ( maximising drinking time ) If not, will I be able to get back to Bern after the game ( none of us will be fit to drive )
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 This is what I have found. Leave Friday night, Dover-Calais, check into hotel in Rheims Drive down to Fribourg in the morning Drive back the next morning back home via Dover-Calais. Works out at £65 + Petrol. Not bad at all.

Is it feasable to get a ferry and then a train to cut out the driving ( maximising drinking time ) If not, will I be able to get back to Bern after the game ( none of us will be fit to drive ) You can get a train, trains in France and Switzerland are excellent, but fairly expensive, I looked at going over by train and think you're looking in the region of £120+ return. If you're not fussy about where you stay, try here http://www.hostelbookers.com/results/index.cfm?strSearchType=dropDown&intCountrySelect=48&intDestSelect=1722&intpeople=1&straccommodationtype=hostels&hasSearched=true&intCountryID=48&intdestinationid=1722&intpropertyid=-1&strkeywords=Fribourg%2C+Switzerland&fuseaction=accommodation.search&dtearrival=16%2F07%2F2010&intnights=2&languageid=1 ha ha, I'm sure you'll love it........
theyin Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Seriously tempted to make a show on Saturday for the game now. Gonna have a look into it I think... boat and train might work. train throught the Alps is murderous. I thought I'd take the train from Basel to Vienna for the Euro Cup final a couple of years back (even though I was offered a flight). The romantic notion of winding through the mountains taking in the scenery was replaced by 13 hours of drudgery lollopping along through the mist and torrential rain. Never again

I think we have decided to drive it, they do seem a bit pricey for a pikey like me. Gutted Mr Cortese, can't stop me from getting to the pre-season tour. Although driving to the Alps and back in a weekend probably won't end up the best idea I have ever had.
oldsarum Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Don't forget you have to pay a tax to use motorways in Switzerland, which used to be a blanket charge rather than a toll as in France
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Don't forget you have to pay a tax to use motorways in Switzerland, which used to be a blanket charge rather than a toll as in France F*cking taxes, I bet that was Cortese's idea too.

Leave Friday night, Dover-Calais, check into hotel in Rheims Drive down to Fribourg in the morning Drive back the next morning back home via Dover-Calais. Works out at £65 + Petrol. Not bad at all. You'll also have to pay for a tax disk in Switzerland at the border (around €20 I think) and the motorways through France will set you back another €100ish. Also remember that in Switzerland there are only a few petrol stations that take Euro's at the border generally so you might want to get some Swiss Francs.

Just checked, is 27 euros for the tax on Swiss border and 49 euros in tolls. I need to find out if petrol is cheaper in Switzerland or France I guess. This is going to be a painful journey... 2200km roundtrip in a car for a pointless friendly.

Dave Benson Phillips Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 It'll be well worth it, we did Sweden and Norway. Both awesome trips. It would have been nicer if Mr Cortese could have given me a bit more notice so I don't have to drive the 2200km in less than 48 hours though as I couldn't get the time off work at this short notice. Pah Oh wait, Dulldays started kicking off saying I had no intention of going on the pre-season tour and was just saying it for the sake of it... Fell free to say sorry Dulldays.

We went past a few petrol stations on the way into Thun this morning and their petrol seems to be about 10p a litre cheaper than in the UK. No idea how much it is in France these days though.

I have been looking up and Interlaken seems massively expensive £5 a pint, in comparison to Fribourg £3 a pint.

We're paying something like 8 or 9 CHF a pint, which is about £6. Everything's expensive here though, even an extra value meal is about £7
