This is how we do our transfers now guys! Who ever called this one? no one! but heck it's a good one.

I don't think that we've quite got used to the way transfers are done now. This was out of the blue & no-one called it. £450k (which I reckon will be all in so maybe £250k up front) is not a massive amount for a player who should be able to do a job at NPC level. The Charlton fans are not happy, and trying to cover by saying its a lot for a L1 RB.

At least this should soothe the fears of some on here - so we can start guessing who's next? But whoever & whenever it is, we now have a nailled on starting XI for Plymouth on 7th August so we can sit back, relax and wait for next bolt from the blue.

Great for three reasons:-

1 He's nails and a top quality player for this League

2 Once again Cortese and Co do what they said they'd do - good business without fuss and publicity - who saw that coming??

3 It might shut the serial complainers on this forum up for a few days

Roll on 7/8/10!!

Why ?

There have been some revenue optimisation activities which could have indicated a book-balancing exercise underway.

5 year plan? club ambition? are you the only person who has failed to see cortese's 5 year plan? Perhaps you preferred the old days of rumour after rumour followed by utter dissapointment?

Good signing!

I've hard that basically any Charlton player is for sale.

Wayyyyyyy too much information. "Charlton player sales turn aintforever on". ;-)

On a serious point, the Charlton fans don't think they have many assets left - weakening our promotion rivals is a good move, they signed Gary Docherty today though who is good at this level though, so it's not like they'll be out of the picture.

Charlton fans are really p*ssing me off.

"I could get you promoted with those funds,he should of been sacked last year maybe winning the mickey mouse cup saved him cos even with the minus 10 the plank shoulda done better but knowing Pardew he is capable of mesing up against all the odds."

Sounds like how some Saints fans talk about Redknapp....

Out of curiosity, anyone know why Leeds released him season before last? I know that Leeds signed Jason Crowe from Northampton around the same time but was Crowe really that much better than Richardson? Just interested in the background.

(btw, 'small but interesting' fact....when Frazer Richardson left Leeds in 2009 he was the last surviving Leeds player from their last Premier League side. So congrats to Cortese and Pardew for signing another ex-Premier League player :-) )

WHy is he a great signing then if you haven't seen him play - odd comment???

Don't think you actually have to have seen someone play to know they are good!

True dat. Although I don't think he ever played for them in the Premiership as Gary Kelly was in the way.

He played four Premier League games in Leeds last season in the top flight. Including a match against Saints.

He was then their right back and later captain for a number of seasons including their playoff season in the Championship.

He made 4 Premier League appearances in 2003-04 according to the internet font of all highly accurate knowledge.....*cough* Wikipedia *cough*

I'm thinking Jason Dodd type player here? Very dependable, played in the Prem, club captain. A fair parallel? (I'm saying this as a good thing btw)

I am pretty sure he made his debut in the premiership. Played for them a bit in the year they went down.

I take Wiki as gospel. You learn something every day. I will nickname him Kevin, after the last Richardson to play for us.

Excellent news! I do like the way that Saints conduct their business discretely and we no longer seem to have weeks of speculation, followed too often with disappointment. I ought to feel sorry for those clubs whose decent/ top players we extract, I suppose: but, I don't as we have had plenty of being on the wrong end of such deals. Lets hope we keep our sought after players this season to make sure of that "Top Spot."

I felt sorry for Southend. Hope they survive this year.

has he got pace? I've seen him play lots if times but can't remember him at all. £450,000 seems a lot for a player with only a year left on his contract, but if he is quality then who cares. Anyone able to offer a decent descriotion of how he plays? League 1 team of the year is nice but our friend Watsit was in that side two seasons ago and no one is going to tell me Harte was the best left back last season - so I'd like a few descriptions of anyone can offer them. I've read nails. That sounds good to me, but a bit of pace and attacking flair would be good to hear.

Good signing.

Completely out of the blue it seems. Can we therefore assume that there is now no longer such a thing as an 'ITK poster'?

Death to the rumours, long live the unexpected, quality signings.

Great signing. FR was top draw last season and his inclusion in the team of the year was fully deserved.

This is a shrewd signing from AP and done relatively cheaply too.

Very much look forward to seeing him in a Saints shirt this season, and hope he proves to be top draw signing for us.

What sort of a right back is he?

Your modern pacey, attacking and a bit suspect in defence type full back (Bale, Johnson etc) or a more traditional defensive full back (Neville, Murty?)

Probably seen him play plenty of times against Southampton, but it's very rare an opposition player ever stands out.

bit of both i think, he's not full of pace - but he's solid at the back, yet attacking minded. He has a great cross on him...and he can take a great pen!

Sounds like a right footed Harding then like we've all been crying out for. Really pleased with this, was a nice surprise to come home too after finishing work this evening.

Should be perfect then, sounds a bit like Dan Harding.

Brilliant signing, that's RB sorted! Pardew, Cortese and the team have come up trumps time and time again since they've been here, it's fantastic to be able to put your faith in the management staff to bring in top quality players rather than worrying about dodgy signings.

Dear Lord what is WRONG with you people

Nothing happens for weeks and then one small snippet and you're all Happy Clappers. FFS Not a single moan, He's a CCC quality RB, that's RUBBISH - we shouldn't be signing that sort of player. How does this solve our problem of playing on ploughed fields on Tuesday nights.

And who is this AP bloke you all give Kudos to? I thought he'd left already and been replaced by Owen as Player DOF First Team Doctor

Rubbish signing. Why haven't we signed Lahm? Very disappointed

Bring it on 2010/11 THE season I wished I was an ST Holder and at SMS every week

Sign the best players for the League we are in. Wonder where that idea came from?

Just wondering who is going to sign as cover to the PFA League 1 right back, cos its going to take a hell of a signing to get someone that will challenge him for the shirt.

I think we will just give Murty a pay as you play contract, either that or sign a versatile defender who can cover right back and centre back.

If only we had a young utility player, or an injury prone but reliable player, or a warhorse of a player that could fill in at right back if needed... oh.

FWIW Fonte started out as a right back at Palace and Harding filled in admirably in that position too. Perhaps we're aiming for an interchangeable defensive line...

Just read a few of the comments. Dear, oh dear. By and large, they are not a happy bunch tonight.

I have to say I feel a bit sorry for them, it must be horrible knowing that next season is going to be so utterly disastrous with literally no good players coming in.
