Hopkins Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Spurr is twice the player Harding is btw. I don't agree with some of his other opinions especially the laughable attempt at claiming there strike force is better than ours (Tudgay v Lambert will be a good battle next season though) but he's right about Spurr. Keepers are probably the same. Can't really judge Sedgewick and is Miller the guy who played for Ipswich? Centre Mid? If so he's pretty decent tbf. I'd rather have Morgan mind but Miller will be class in this league if its the one i'm thinking of. Should be a good battle between us, Wednesday, Brighton and Huddersfield next season.

Hopkins Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Meh. I can't see them being a massive threat. I forgot Peterborough. They will do well.
wild-saint Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Our squad is stronger. We've addressed the lack of balance, freed the garbage, and signed some good players. Brian Laws relegated us. If Irvine had been in charge the duration of the season with our points per game ratio we would have been comfortably mid-table and just missed out on the playoffs. We are a different side to the confidence wrecked, in-fighting shambles we were under Laws. Grant is comfortably a better keeper than yours (we've turned down £2m this pre-season from Wigan for him) and as well as the others you mention I would definitely take Spurr, Sedgewick and Miller over your players. It's all opinions though and yours clearly differ from mine. Opinions are like a-rseholes, everyone has got one. You my friend are deluded and talking out of yours How you can say Todger will out score Lambert who has scored over 60 league goals in two seasons is frankly ridiculous. I think forest and leicesters performance as the promoted sides from league 1 last year prove that the difference in standard between the top of L1 and the championdhip isnt particularly great. I would bet that if a poll of football fans i league 1 were asked who they would have up front the saints pair would get more votes. Tiem to remove those rose tinted glasses and gear up for an almighty struggle to get back to the championship.
Dalek2003 Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 How many points do we need to be safe from relegation ?
hutch Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 How many points do we need to be safe from relegation ? At the moment I think it's 70, but it'll go down as more games are played.
dune Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Meh. I can't see them being a massive threat. I forgot Peterborough. They will do well. Peterborough will be a cracking away day as we'll get the terrace behind the goal. Drinking is ****e in Peterborough though but if enough people are interested it'll try to organise booking charters on the river which is 5 minutes from the ground.

dune Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Lets hope there isn't a booking fee or Peterborough town it is. If there is any sort of fee then I wouldn't entertain the idea. I'm not Nick Illingsworth, just happen to be fairly local to Posh.
Kaiser Soze Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Personally I think 11/4 on us to win the league is a license to print money.
Legod Third Coming Posted 7 July, 2010 Author Posted 7 July, 2010 Personally I think 11/4 on us to win the league is a license to print money. No, Starspangledbanner to win the July Cup at 4/1. THAT is a licence to print money...
carljack Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Now is the time to bet like Men! take all the evens you can get on Saints getting promoted, its like finding money!.
SaintBobby Posted 7 July, 2010 Posted 7 July, 2010 Now is the time to bet like Men! take all the evens you can get on Saints getting promoted, its like finding money!. Totally agree. I'm now staked for just over 5K on Saints being promoted - at about evens (overall at 1.98). Last year, I had 2K Lambert to be top scorer (placed in November at 2/1 -or 3.00 in new money), for a tidy 4K profit. The odds on Saints going up are amazingly attractive - and easier to lay off than the 11/4 about us winning the League if things get wobbly.

And I guess I do have my 12/1 Holland to play with with... The big problem of course, is knowing what financial state I'll be in at the time if things start to go pear-shaped...!
corsacar saint Posted 8 July, 2010 Posted 8 July, 2010 It is very rare for any team to walk away with any league,Reading and Leicester being the exceptions of recent years. We will have no problem scoring goals,if we stop conceding soft ones at the opposite end,we should with the players we have[and are likely to sign, whoever they may be],be able to finish hopefully in the top two.
tartanowl Posted 8 July, 2010 Posted 8 July, 2010 When i was a kid Sheffield Weds were my second team because Lee Chapman sent me a signed picture. His mum used to run a pub in Corfe Castle. He was a hero of mine for a while as a kid too. Sheffield Wednesday will remain (in my head) as the team who would always seem to beat us in the Prem, during the 90s, and David Hurst would always score. Then we bought Hurst and apparently he was broken. I hope they do well. They've always struck me as an honest team and an honest club. They're welcome to any promotion spot we're not using, as far as I'm concerned. Tartanowl is a nutter for forking out a fiver to join a Saints website though! I just hope his subjective viewpoint, about SFC, gives us some good debating material through the season. The fiver will be spent if it provides good debate and entertainment over the season. I think and hope we will make up the top 2 and I'll be equally happy with either place. Fair enough, the last time I saw you play in the flesh was the 4-1 defeat at Watford. Though Watford were very good that night, you were awful. That was our 2nd worst performance of the season. We lost 6-0 to Reading in one game too but Laws last game in charge at Leicester only tops it. Despite the many downs we've had as a side through the years I've never seen such a reaction from our fans in 25 years of watching Wednesday as I did at Leicester. We brought 3000 despite being on a near ten game winless and goalless streak and we were singing and cheering shots off target like goals throughout the game. The best away fans they've ever seen in any league according to many on Foxestalk. The end of the game was a different story though. Comfortably? Have you regularly watched both players? Davis was given a trial and offered a deal at West Ham last season! You would take Mellor over Lambert? Sedgewick over Lallana? The last time I saw Kelvin Davis he picked the ball out of his net 5 times. Spurr is twice the player Harding is btw. I don't agree with some of his other opinions especially the laughable attempt at claiming there strike force is better than ours (Tudgay v Lambert will be a good battle next season though) but he's right about Spurr. Tommy Miller you are correct.
hutch Posted 8 July, 2010 Posted 8 July, 2010 Unfortunately, every time I hear "Sheffield Wednesday" I get a vision of Woy Hattersley. Scary.
Saints foreva Posted 8 July, 2010 Posted 8 July, 2010 I don't think there is much difference between the Saints and Wednesday side. Lee Grant - Kelvin Davis Jon Ostemobor - Frazer Richardson Darren Purse - Jose Fonte Mark Beevers - Radhi Jaidi Tommy Spurr - Dan Harding Jermaine Johnson - Jason Puncheon Tommy Miller - Dean Hammond Darren Potter - Morgan Schneiderlin Chris Sedgewick - Adam Lallana Paul Heffernan - Rickie Lambert Markus Tudgay - Lee Barnard That would be my opinion of squads man by man but I can't be asked to do all players. Tommy Spurr vs Dan Harding/Lee Grant vs Kelvin were both hard ones to call, I think Grant has the height advantage that Kelvin lacks and I remember Tommy Spurr being very highly rated when we were in the Championship so went for him.
SaintNeil90 Posted 8 July, 2010 Posted 8 July, 2010 The last time I saw Kelvin Davis he picked the ball out of his net 5 times. Maybe because the 'team' were rubbish that day! Last season Grant picked the ball out of his net 69 times to Davis 47. Last time I saw Grant, I was sat in the Palace end watching Ambrose pass the ball past Grant and relegate Wednesday.
Rut Posted 9 July, 2010 Posted 9 July, 2010 It's interesting reading other teams msg boards. This is kinda typical (Millwall): http://www.independentmillwall.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=99767&st=0&sk=t&sd=a Southampton to win League One is not questioned at all. For those who think our odds are way too short then just how much are you laying us for on Betfair? I bet not a single penny. Put your money where you mouth is or STFU. For those who took the 4/1 on us when the 1st odds were published - fair play! I hope you HAVE laid us on Betfair - easy money!

captainchris Posted 9 July, 2010 Posted 9 July, 2010 they dont seem to have factored in the extra pressure of the fans and boards expectations. It is going to be a different atmosphere at SMS this season if we dont win from the start. And the fact that as of now we have not replaced our pace in the team with Antonio and Papa gone..........Hopefully the picture will change dramatically very soon but right now we are heading for a reality check when the season kicks off!

This time last year what odds would you have gotten on Liverpool finishing 7th? They had shorter odds to win a league and cup double. How did that work out again? We are arguably favourites (I like Wednesday as well), but no more. Beyond that, anyone who thinks there is any certainty over *thirty six games* is a fool. Still, I might be wrong. That must be why there are so many bookies in business, because the punter always wins! Can I interest you in some magic beans?
Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 9 July, 2010 Posted 9 July, 2010 I'm not so sure that we'll **** this league. Infact, I'd bet anybody a Cheese sandwich that we don't **** it.
suewhistle Posted 9 July, 2010 Posted 9 July, 2010 I know we've been here before. I think there should be a comma after "I know"... Sorry, English teacher here... Anyway, welcome, as unlike some opposition fans here you seem to talk sense - even if we disagree radically with your opinions. ;-) anyway, I've seen Saints away in Sheffield, but so many years ago I can't remember which team.. nice beer though....
suewhistle Posted 9 July, 2010 Posted 9 July, 2010 Oh, and in a further spirit of football friendship can I point you in the direction of a thread on this board. Absolutely fascinating, entertaining, shocking and worth pointing out to your mates: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?14620-Pompey-Takeover-Saga :-)
John B Posted 10 July, 2010 Posted 10 July, 2010 We finished just 3 points off an auto place last season (if you add the 10 points back) and that was after starting with an incomplete team that had a terrible 10 game start. League 1 has lost Norwich, Leeds and Millwall - the best 3 teams in the league last year - and replaced them with arguably lesser teams. The players have now gelled into a team that knows how to win in this league and which has added some very good signings so far. We also have a chairman who is amenable to investing in the team if we need to strengthen further. We have a decent manager with top flight experience. That's why the bookies are putting us down as nailed on certs - and I agree with them! Yes we should be in the top two but who knows
tartanowl Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Clinton Morrison the lastest to sign. So we have the following to choose from up front... Neil Mellor Marcus Tudgay Jermaine Johnson Paul Heffernan Clinton Morrison I'm happy with that!
Gorgiesaint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Think Clinton Morrison is a decent signing for you, tartanowl, as long as you can keep his apparant ego in check. If you can do that, reckon he should get you 20-25 goals this season.

View From The Top Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Saints to go up and Lambert as golden boot is 7-1 with Paddypower.
eelpie Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 If bookies are to be believed. 11/4 to win the league before a ball has been kicked? 10/11 for promotion? Either we are nailed on, or some lumpy bets have been placed. Let's hope it's the former!! Not until we've strengthened the midfield. But perhaps the bookies know something we don't....
NickG Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 think bookies realise the players we slag off saying not good enough for back up are probably good enough for half the 1st 11s in this league!
Verbal Kint Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 Number 1 rule of bookmaking- lay things as short as you can get away with. With all the money we have the mug punters won't take a second look in the division. It's that simple
Pilchards Posted 12 July, 2010 Posted 12 July, 2010 The problem with Wednesday is they have the losing feeling. Its take some doing to gain confidence again by winning week in week out. I personally don't see them as a top two even with the quality of players they are getting in. Next season they will **** this league though.
walkley_owl Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Be an interesting season. Clinton Morrison is an excellent addition to our squad
Thedelldays Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 morrison is a good signing....dislike the way he talks though...all gansta..lol then again, lambert is a scouser.....!!! sheff wed (along with us) will be right up there come the business end of the season
