Deppo Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 Well, looks like Saints have lost out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southend_utd/8787730.stm Southend have appointed Paul Stirrock and Tommy Widdrington as a dream team. I remember a few respected posters on here mentioning Widdrington as a manager for Southampton not so long ago. Well, hopefully with AP we'll still be fine, but good luck to Tommy, Paul and Southend. doughnutman Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southend_utd/8787730.stm As the title says. Always thought Widdrington would have made a good coach here IMO.
OldNick Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 that's another kick in the guts for Salisbury, and then you see how Pompey have blagged it. there really is no justice
Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 I was one of the many people who was in favour of Widderington getting to job when he was in the running for it. He was a legend for us when he was here, a midfield general much like Maddison/Chaplow/Mark Hughes before him with loads of games experience and a passion for the club. Living in Salisbury I have seen what he has put together and built the team up (financial irregularities aside) and was still a useful player as well - the unibond league and league 1 aren't all that different and he would have given us a few more options in defense/midfield. I was happy enough when Pardew came but given the choice between someone who had failed at West Ham or a new young manager with a succesful manager/coach career already being carved out, it would have been quite a difficult choice tbh. All I am saying, basically, is that I think that quite a few people would have been pleased to see Widderington in our dugout. Maybe even with a squad number on his back. Junction 9 Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 I echo the thoughts of the OP and this Atticus fella. I reserve judgement on Sturrock, but Widdrington! A true Saint who could have done wonders for us. Maybe now the sceptics will change their minds if he achieves success in his new role. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if you see him getting a Prem job within 5 years. Good luck Tommy!!
SuperMikey Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 I'm sure Tommy will be back at Saints someday, whatever capacity it is in. Thought it was a bit odd that Saafend employed Sturrock when his mental and physical condition are deteriorating due to the Parkinsons. Not a long-term appointment! Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 6 July, 2010 Share Posted 6 July, 2010 Promotion and an FA cup final seconds from being won?! Is that really failing? and that is why loads of other premiership clubs were in the hunt for him, eh? lets face it, if any premiership or championship club were even remotely interested in Pards, he'd be off like a shot. i don't think it is unfair, contraversial or even that suprising to say that people view his tenure as West Ham manager as a case of 'what might have been'. Widderington, however, in one foul swoop has made the jump from unibond to championship. I confidently predict that within 3 years he will be in the premiership. Anyone who saw Salisbury playing last year would tell you the same. I am fed up with uninformed morons coming on here and telling me my business. Pardew has a track record and this has been pointed out above, Widdrington has yet to prove himself, simples. Nobody knows if he will be good enough for us and quite frankly I don't care, we have a manager who we should get behind.

When he's proven himself in the prem, after a couple of years, I think he could be the home grown England manger we need. Capello has proven to be a failure and Widdrington would bring the fire back. I have been behind Pardew since the start, but proven track record? Widderington is a real up-and coming manager and we are idiots for having passed up on him when we had the chance, idiots. I have already said that I don't like people telling me my business, and I mean it. I have had that my whole life from everyone who I have grown up with and I am not gonna take it from anyone anymore, especially from failed nobodies on a cr*p internet forum. Yeah, but you have struck the nail on the head. Widderington will be running the club day-to-day. Southend just hired a 'name' so that the fans would be pacified. Everyone knows that Widderington will be running the show from behind the scenes.
saintwarwick Posted 7 July, 2010 Share Posted 7 July, 2010 So suddenly only what you thinks counts? Pardew does have a track record that you cannot deny, Widdrington has no record whatsoever. Whether it's your business or mine facts are there to be seen. As for failed nobodies on a crap internet forum, guess we all fit in there don't we otherwise we wouldn't be here anyway, we would be in football management. I have absolutely no knowledge of widderington being linked with middlesborough. bear in mind that i am NOT wiltshire saint or anyone else, despite what people say. show me the middlesborough stuff because i am completely unaware of it.
