Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 This has to be the worst World Cup I can remember for TV pundits . Number 1, we know the World Cup is in Africa, we don't need telling 10 times every bloody game. What's it going to be like in 4 years time, the clichés about Brazil will be coming out every minute of every game. Number 2, the "experts" on both channels have been absolutely dreadful. I was in France for the last World Cup and they have people like Wenger and Houllier on there. I've also spent a bit of time in Dublin where RTE's Johnny Giles and Eamon Dunphy really tell it like it is, to the Eire side as well. Who do we have? Gareth Southgate,Lee Dixon, Mark Bright and that clown Lawro. Alan Hansen seems to be overdoing the "miserable get" routine and don't get me started on Garth Crookes. Where are all the characters, the people who are going to speak their minds like previous World Cups, like Cloughie, Big Mal, our very own Mick C and Tommy Doc? It used to be Trevor brooking who sat on the fence, now it's the whole lot of them. Clear them all out and get in people like , Ian Holloway, Gary Neville, The Special One, Matt Le Tiss, Rodney Marsh, Fergie and some Managers like David Moyes, Walter Smith and John Toshack. I know they maybe contracted elsewhere, but we need people like them, that will speak their mind, know what they are on about and entertain me. The camera work has been outstanding, but it's being ruined by idiots in the commentary box. Do you agree or are you happy with the coverage. SuperMikey Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 I believe David Moyles has done a few 'guest spots', namely in England's warm-up games. Aside from that, I agree, some of the things the pundits come out with are just shocking.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 July, 2010 Author Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Did anyone see in the Argie-German game the camera picked out Charlize Theron, the Oscar-winning actress, and BBC commentator Steve Wilson said; "I don't know who that is, must be somebody's WAG." Just shows for all their "This World Cups in Africa", they know sweet FA about it.Lawro then made some smart arse comment. Why does Lawro also insist on making jokes about "changing underpants and toilet paper". I have a 10 year old who thinks it's funny, but bloody hell,if he defended like he pundits, Liverpool would never have won a thing.

Ponty Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 They also identified Leonardo Di Caprio as Matt Damon during the same match. It was funny, rather than annoying, because I want my commentators/pundits to be experts on the football rather than Hollywood. Unfortunately they didn't have that going for them either. Saintandy666 Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 The company who has been doing the camera work for the world cup(I assume a South African one) is absolutely awful. Saint Martini Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Not a TV-pundit but he works for the BBC so I'll have to mention Garth Crooks' idiotic team of the quarter finals. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8786208.stm His team of the QF's: Gregory Van Der Wiel Left-back Netherlands This impressive young man looks better every time I see him. He is a stereotypical Dutch full-back who's quick, aggressive and comfortable on the ball. The Ajax man is not afraid to join in the play when required. Thomas Mueller Midfielder Germany The Bayern Munich star is proving to be one of the players of the tournament. Any player who destroys England and Brazil in a matter of days must be a bit special. He wears number 13 in honour of the legendary Gerd Muller. If he continues to score goals at this rate, he will eclipse him. How can you put a player in a position he has never played in? Especially when you also have Lahm in your team who can play both left and right back..... Ow, and Germany beat Argentina, not Brazil.... How can you take a columnist seriously after such mistakes? Whitey Grandad Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 They sometimes talk a load of over-excited ********. Saint in Paradise Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 You lot are very lucky as at least your "experts" have at least played the game at very high levels. We have a clown called Martin Devlin and, well I better not say what I really think about him. Oh yes and during the highlights prog they sometimes show the games in reverse order to how they were played so that in the advert breaks when they also give snippets about what will be in the news they tell you who has been knocked out. This means that there is no point watching anymore. Quite frankly the TV coverage is very very amateur but at least we have the UK commentators. St Landrew Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 To be honest, I don't give a monkey's fart that the sports comentators don't know who the acting celebrities are in the crowd. In fact, I'd rather the camera didn't stray to them. By all means have pictures of ordinary spectators, but let's leave it at that. At least they proably paid to be there, and were not invited. I can undestand that ex-players don't want to overly criticise their own. But managers are removed enough not to have that problem. I think it is time for a clear out of pundits, and bring in the guys who normally make the tactics and choose the players. Sadly, Shearer has learned at the school of Hansen and Lawrenson, although Dixon does seem to talk some sense, and doesn't talk in cliche or a series of soundbites. At the very least, the BBC should not renew the ex-Liverpool pair's contracts. They've been paid enough money by now, anyway.

dubai_phil Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 (edited) Lol as I mentioned on the other TV pundit thread, Al Jazeera seem to have nicked ALL the best pundits. (Apart from Trevor Francis who was awful) The only non-manager we have had has been Scott Minto but everyone else has been quality. Gus Poyet was probably the funniest, Glenn Hoddle the best at really drilling down at tactics, Peter Reid & Big Sam were also quality. We even had Graham Poll popping in from time to time. Haven't worked out whether their studio is in London or actually down here in Qatar. The latter seemed more likely as the guys pop over here to host different evenings at a local bar The reason? being Managers rather than aspiring TV celebs they probably know what they are talking about. I suppose purists would moan about "being the old generation" or "not in touch with the Yoof" The match coverage as I said before is also better, just the one commentator calling the game - the analysis is in the studio. John Helm does go on a bit about "what might happen" and how this could go to penalties, but then that was just copying Motty. I guess Sky or the PL global coverage company must have "rented" their commentators to FIFA for the internatinal ENglish Language coverage. Oh and the studio guys spotted Charlize (& Merkle) straight away but also made the joke that they were not experts on Hollywood. Only complaint we have is that the satellite signal itself remains patchy (they were hacked) and pixellated and that some games just cannot be watched on HD as the signal is so bad or the English commentary is full of static at times Edited 5 July, 2010 by dubai_phil

Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 5 July, 2010 Share Posted 5 July, 2010 I know he's an ex-saint, but who's idea was it to give Andy Townsend a job as a pundit. The man is a complete stroker and possible one of the worst TV pundits I've ever seen. However, the one person who has completely ****ed me off in this world cup and who has me reaching for the mute button on the TV remote is Mick McCarthy. What a ****! How he gets players to respond to his instruction is completely beyond me. The man seems to have made a living out of stating the obvious with a Yorkshire twang. Pearls of wisdom such as 'That's a foul, t'ref's got to sho im a card. He as, that's a yellow card'. And, 'Aye, how could he not score from there. T'easy from that distance. What kind o'player don't score from there'. ****! I'm suprised the players at Wolves havn't turned against him.

Then when presented with a South African star didn't have a clue who she was. I also thought it funny the "right on" and PC Beeb jumped to the conclusion she was a WAG, just because she was fit.I bet he'll be on a diversity course once the World Cup's over.
