Ponty Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 OK, serious answer... I don't think any players, with the possible exception of David Villa, have hit the sort of form we know they can. On that basis, I pick David Villa as the standout player so far.

S-Clarke Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Schweinsteiger is the best player so far by an absolute mile, he just runs games for them - and he's primarily always operated as a winger! Klose has done what he does at every world cup, scores goals. David Villa has been excellent too, been at the heart of everything spain do and without him they would have struggled to get this far. JackFrost Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Diego Forlan Messi (Didn't really happen for him though, every keeper he played against had a blinder) Keisuke Honda Jong Tae Sae Robinho David Villa Ryan Nelsen Thomas Muller Kevin Prince Boateng Alexis Sanchez Luis Suarez Robert Vittek Wesley Sneijder

BallBoy Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 I'm with Scweinsteiger too. He is not flamboyant but he controls games. He is immensely strong, intelligent and skilful. Never seems to be under pressure, makes good decisions, defends and attacks with equal proficiency. Fabulous player. He must be our BIG announcement on Friday! Saint Billy Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 I would pretty much go for all the German side to be fair, as a unit so far they have been untouchable.
Arizona Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Before opening this thread I'd have said Schweinsteiger or Sneijder, with honourable mentions to Honda and Klose. Messi has shown some skills against N. Korea and the like, but hasn't delivered.
angelman Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 people say Messi. Yes he has beautiful footwork, but you look at the "superstars" (or supposed ones), Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo, Kaka and see how many goals they have scored between them. What is it - 1 by Ronaldo? Not sure the superstars have really fired. This of course is not including the Spaniards like Villa. Germany and Holland often doesn't have the superstars but they seem to gel as a unit. Saint_clark Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Muller has come out of nowhere and done fantastically well. Lahm is one of my favourite ever players, i've never seen him have a bad game. And although his nation went out, I think Lucio is the best CB in the world right now. Outstanding.

Saint Martini Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 I don't think Sneijder has been playing all that well (apart from the second half against Brazil). He's not been as dominant as he can be but somehow he has scored a few goals (so no complaints there). But to be a "standout player" he has to show more of that second half vs. Brazil form in the next two matches. For me Villa, Contrao, Müller and Forlan. If anyone for Holland has been standout its van Bommel in my opinion.
sadoldgit Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Agree that the starts have not really shone apart from Villa. Some even look like CCC players in the competition..what happened to Torres? Messi is gifted but it hasn't happened for him at all. The Germans have been awesome but then they always find something extyra in tournaments whereas we go the other way. SNSUN Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Muller must be the shock of the tournament - the fact that he hadn't scored before this World Cup for his country (that I only learned yesterday), makes his 4 goals all the more suprising. My player of the tournament goes to Wesley Sneijder, he'll win the cup for the Netherlands, mark my words. Worst player of the tournament? Robert Green. Dark Munster Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Schweinstieger for me by some distance. Other than that nobody has really stood out that much. Villa and Forlan have had good tournaments. Schweinsteiger has been very good, but is playing in a good team. Forlan on the other hand has almost single-handedly taken a pretty average Uruguay team to the semis. So Forlan gets my vote for the player of the tournament (so far). WTF did Fergie do to him during his time at ManUre?

Andy_Porter Posted 12 July, 2010 Share Posted 12 July, 2010 It's amazing how Barca keep churning out all these stars, Cassilas, Ramos, Capdevilla and Villa where the only players not thave come through their accademy in Spains starting eleven. They're only going to get better when Villa gets used to playing with Iniesta and Xavi every week, even more so if Fabregas joins them.

SuperMikey Posted 12 July, 2010 Share Posted 12 July, 2010 Forlan shouldn't have been player of the tournament imo, there were scores of players who played better than he did. Even on the Uruguay team, Suarez was more consistent than Forlan, he'll almost certainly have earned a move to the Prem this summer. Also, all of the commentators/pundits last night were declaring Iniesta to be the best player of the tournament when he's been largely rubbish. I was expecting him and Xavi to run the tournament for Spain, but they were largely ineffective and pretty poor in most senses, bar a few special moments like Iniesta's goal last night. Xavi just specialised in falling over a lot, and Iniesta was forever trying to win cheap free kicks off Van der Wiel last night by spinning and kicking VdW's foot to trip himself. If it were up to me, it would've been; BEST PLAYERS 1) Bastian Schweinsteiger - Run every match he played in, never stopped working and had a few very special moments that will surely have cemented his reputation as a World Class footballer now. 2) Thomas Muller - Considering his inexperience at International level, he's been outstanding. Scored some very important goals and Germany didn't look quite the same without him in their Semi Final, but were revitalised in the 3rd Place Playoff when he came back. 3) David Villa - Was top quality, one of the few players on the Spanish team that deserves his Winners medal (imo of course). Scored some brilliant goals and can't wait to see what he does at Barca with the likes of Messi around him. WORST PLAYERS 1) Emile Heskey - Should never have gone to the WC, hopefully Capello will drop him now for future Internationals. 2) Robin Van Persie - I know he was doing the 'donkey work' for the Dutch team, but he squandered so many chances over the course of the tournament which other strikers like Huntelaar would've put away easily. 3) Wayne Rooney - Maybe a bit harsh to include him as he clearly wasn't match fit, but there were times when he was truly dreadful. Hopefully he can pick himself up after the tournament and get back to his best for Man Utd.
