American Football, just a **** game and Basketball is just utter nonsense. As far as I know, Basketball and Netball are the only games invented in the USA. I believe that every other major game they play was invented elsewhere. I played Badminton to schools representative level. It didn't feel like I was a bit iffy, when I was out thinking an opponent, when he was quite clearly a technically better and more powerful player than I was. It certainly isn't for the unfit, although it isn't heart attack territory like Squash either. I played rounders for my junior school and Rugby Union for the school in my teens. Played quite a few sports back then.

To be fair, most major modern games were invented by the British, either in the UK, or wherever they happened to be ruling on the globe at some particular point. Unless, of course a game was invented by the Chinese first and then lost in the mists of time. Skiing..! The British didn't invent that, but surprisingly were heavily involved in the development of alpine skiing as a sport. You wouldn't think it. But then again, that's becoming the way of football now. I can't ski, can't skate but I can ( still) play football which really is a "winter sport" isn't it ? St Landrew Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Last time I tried, which was about 30 years ago [no hang on, 35], I could skate upto speed and then do a stop where you shower everyone in ice. I could do that pretty regularly too. Interest waned afterwards and I stopped going. I think other people were pleased about that.

St Landrew Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 As to football being a winter sport, I believe these overpaid Premier League superstars want a winter break so they can recharge their batteries. Basically, they want to cut out the only remaining hardship they have, which screws up their Christmas and New Year for the sake of sport. I'm not for it, myself. Me neither, the football season goes on long enough without a winter break. Quite right, I don't know if you played much football as a nipper but I remember playing for my school team on a Saturday, Sunday League U16 next day and then another school game on the Monday. Ok, you simply cannot compare the intensity but then we would not have had the luxury of so much free time or the time to train. I would have played every day if I could ! Ok, you simply cannot compare the intensity but then we would not have had the luxury of so much free time or the time to train. I would have played every day if I could ! Yep. Played for 4 years for my junior/middle school. Came into the side as a regular substitute in my 2nd year and then played the remaining years. David Stamp was my team captain in my first year, after which I played in every position except LB and GK. I wasn't ultra quick but I had a touch of the Teddy Sheringham's about me. Not that I was thin and lanky either. In my last year I mainly played right-side/central midfield, or Right Half as it was properly called back then. EDIT: Oops forgot. Played for Taranto Terriers [they were awful] so ended up playing for Brendon [bombers] for a while too. I think you'll find that though a Canadian invented the game the first games were played at US colleges, I thought that there was a specific U.S. university that Basketball was invented in. Of course, I'm not remotely interested in Basketball, and so any recent knowledge I may have picked up of the sport is probably courtesy of QI. Perhaps the lecturer/coach was Canadian..? Oh, the Brendon Bombers, I'm sure I played against them, won 6-2 I think and I scored my only ever hat trick, ah the memories. Was played on the Common. I did play against Manny Andruszewski in my final year at school, just a few months older than me. By then I had converted from a right winger into a midfield player after a year out following a foot operation which suited my free spirit ! Basketball was invented and first played at Springfield College in the US though it was the aforementioned Canadian ( Naismith I think) who was the person at that college who invented the game. Edit : I have played in EVERY position in my time including GK, scored a penalty as we were leading 7-2 and I only volunteered to play in goal as the only other person who was willing was frankly awful, it was a works team and we or rather they ( I was unavailable due to chess commitments ) lost 18-2 v a team we had previously drawn 2-2 against, I played right back in that game and our opponents said we were the best team in our own 6 yard box they had ever played. Fair point, we cleared a fair few off the line and WITHOUT using our hands, even our goalie never used his hands:lol: Edited 4 July, 2010 by chrisobee

More at home at sea than on land I'd say. The classic race was in Sydney 2000 when he won an epic duel against Brazilian nemesis Robert Scheidt to win gold .Going into the final race, Scheidt only needed to finish in the top 20 to secure gold but Ainslie took the fight to the Brazilian and enmeshed him in a private head-to-head at the back of the fleet. He forced Scheidt into an error ( he needed to pass Ainslie to get into the top 20) which led to his disqualification.Sheer genius, nobody else could have done that I believe

He knows when to be aggressive and when to be cautious. He seems to know what's possible, and what to protect. He reads the wind and water on a level I can't get near. At least I can appreciate the fact though, which is something. I passed him in The Solent one day. His boat was 'hove to'.
