Looking for a new car, took a Toyota MR2 out for a test today, great little car really nice I thought until I saw my own reflection and instantly put myself off. Is there any roadsters out there that aren't quite so "hairdresser", or should they be left alone all together. God forbid I was going to test a BMW Z3 this weekend too :(

I want a good four seater convertible with more than a handbag of luggage space. Anyone think of any?

Any good? You can tell by the blurry hedge that she has a fair turn of speed I'll wager.

I'd go S2000. Mental vtec engine too.

What sort of cash?

As second, fun weekend car probably about £8,000 (including about £4,000 for an Alfa spider to trade in). As a main car about £18,000.

XK8/R do anything for you? designed be the same chap who did the Aston M so i am told.

Yep I like them, still a bit 2+2 though. Im looking for a bit of space. Ive got two kids, girlfriends got one and going away involves luggage. Thought about a Chrysler Sebring - but its a bit of a skip with detachable roof.

Main car would be plenty of choice. C70, A4 cab, 3 series. VW Eos is supposed to be decent. All supposing you need 4 seats based on post 11.

2nd car. If 4 seats....older versions of the above, maybe a CLK. Plenty of French stuff if that's your bag. I wonder how good the older French cars would be, but I'd have the megane cab over the 308 (or was it 307) based on looks.

C70 might be big enough. I suppose i was thinking about something Merc E series sized - a proper 5 seater with a decent boot - which I guess rules out a folding hard top.

I don't think there are many cabs that sort of size on the market. I think the pure size causes issues with scuttle shake. The strengthening of the chassis makes the car unbelievably heavy.

We went to the Breakfast Club at Goodwood last weekend and you really would have creamed your jeans at some of the sexy beasts on show.

Loads of Triumph Stags (like) there which I suspect are quite affordable and roomy but if I'd have been looking for ideas I would have come away more undecided tbh. quite a few Mazdas, BM's, Merc's (like) Porshces (yaaawwwwwnnn), a lovely yellow saab (like) and the most disgusting (seriously) ugly lump of metal that i ever set eyas on - a Roller. I tried and tried to like it but I'd have needed some viagra eye-drops to get excited by the sight that stood before me.

Have you considered building your own? Mate at work made a wicked Cobra, wicked car.

If you want a sporty number (and don't want a new car) then the S2000 is a good choice.

If you don't particularly mind not having anything too sporty then how about an old E-Class. Definitely not effeminate.

I also like the Merc SL, which is a bit sportier/more expensive. Some of the early models are really quite reasonable and they should go on for ever.

How about a TVR? Obviously a few problems, build, reliability and a bit wild especially in the rain but think that that might be manly enough.

Great cars that are starting to appreciate in value, best to source one through one of the Mercedes forums like http://www.MBClub.co.uk as they will be able to spot a great car from a mile off and will also point out any dud's. These car are definitely undervalued by the majority of the trade but the really good ones are starting to fetch good prices.

S2000 is a really nice car - too small for what I need though. Seriously thinking about the older E series merc.

Here's a weekend fun car.

Of course, I may have mistaken your idea of fun. Perhaps this is more to your liking..? ;)

lol. Not sure about getting five in the first one. The VW - no need - my sister has got one identical to that, she wont let me borrow tho.....

I've seen this car, it's quite well specced and it's low mileage and comes with the very rare hardtop (on a good day worth £2k on eBay). Worth a look and possibly a sound investment although most buyers would prefer the 300 or 320 model.

Another but in a dull colour

Two really nice examples. I like them, but baulk at bit at paying £15,000 for a 15 year old car, even as an appreciating classic. I know these dont have the same class but which would you go for - given the Chrysler is simialr size to the me but is practically brand new.

Brand new and depreciating fast, what will it be worth in 3 years time? At worst the Mercedes will be worth exactly the same as what you've paid for it. You could get a higher mileage Mercedes for around £8k or take a look at a CLK for around £8k also, Audi A4's are the same money as are decent spec BMW 3 series.

Hmmm. £15k for the old E-convertible does seem quite a bit. What about a CLK convertible then? Surely that would be better than the Chrysler, although as the engine is the most important thing, then there might not be a huge difference. Did the Chrysler have a Merc chassis?

Strange thing Hamster I was there too. Saw that Roller, what a disgusting ugly heap of ****.

Have to agree with S2000 comments, look a bit hairdressserish but a peach of a motor. Seen one of those engines in a mk1 Escort, great performance AND great looks.

f'sure landford.

The next two are

‘Performance Car Legends’

and

‘Classic Sunday’

http://www.goodwood.co.uk/whatson/whatson.aspx

A pretty cool event and amazingly FREE ENTRY. Burgers @ £5 each is a bit steep but then again there's plenty of local pubs for lunch.

Might be worth having a SWF meet if others are up for it? I'd go to the classic one, just need to find someone with a 'classic' car....that starts.

Are you in a rush Red Alert, as seeing cars in their Sunday best might help narrow your search.

Yup, we'd be interested in that landford, we went with 2 others last week and that was good so the more the merrier I say.

SMS start? Might mean a drive into soton just to drive back out again and some of those interested might live east side anyway. How's about some start at SMS and meet others at Hedge End M&S petrol station? Seemd to be the bikers meeting point last week and it's a good spot to grab a coffee and fill the tank?

Ok. How about starting a proper thread on the idea, perhaps on THE LOUNGE where others might come across it, and see if there is any other interest. If you could do that please if you have the dates, times, details etc. Perhaps we might meet and maybe put a face to a name.

Posted

perhaps nearer the date I may do this.

In the meantime could you ask a 'certain person' to ask another certain person tomorrow how the golf went as I won;t see the certain person until friday, I do believe that that certain person may get a certain amount of enjoyment out of the other certain persons response. It's been a long time coming.

The 'people that know' on my Mercedes forum quite like this, the only thing that would be a problem for me would be the big engine if car tax increases, aside from that it looks good.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1768567.htm

That is a seriously nice car. Way better value than £15,000 for a 15 year old E series Merc convertible imo. Would be almost criminal to have my kids trash the interior with pens and assorted spilt liquids.

These cars don't really hold their value because so many were sold and the size of the engine, you can buy a 6/7 year old s-class that cost nearly £60k or more new for less than £10k for the same reason. As log as you buy before any wannabees get their mits on them and don't adhere to the service schedules, black the windows out and stick ridiculous wheels on you're ok.
